A 28-year-old woman in Volusia County is facing a child-neglect charge after a little boy she was watching was found shivering and shoeless on the back porch of a stranger's house near Daytona Beach early Tuesday.
An intoxicated and confused Candace Long was passed out while holding the 2-year-old boy, who was only dressed in wet shorts and a T-shirt in 39-degree weather, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said. Deputies were called to the home on Valley Drive at 1:25 a.m. after getting a report about an "unknown adult and young child who were sitting on the resident's screened-in porch,'' a report said.
"When Long woke up, she was incoherent and muttering that she was drunk because it was her birthday,'' Brandon Haught, a spokesman for the Sheriff's Office, said in a report. She had no idea who the child was. Later, deputies determined that the boy's family lived about two blocks away.
The boy's father asked Long to watch the child while he ran errands. But the family didn't give Long permission to leave with the boy.
Her booking photo shows a fresh wound under her right eye. Haught didn't know how that happened.
