DENVER (AP) -- Colorado won't ban the use of public assistance at marijuana-shop ATMs, despite calls from both Republicans and the pot industry to ban it.

A Colorado Senate committee voted 3-2 Wednesday to reject the GOP proposal to add marijuana shops to the list of places where recipients of public assistance can't use their government-issued EBT cards to access cash. The list already includes casinos, liquor stores and gun shops.

Marijuana industry lobbyists argued for the bill, saying there's no evidence people on public benefits are using pot-shop ATMs and that the prohibition would assure the public that disability benefits or other entitlements aren't being used on pot.

Democrats on the committee all voted against the idea. They said people in poor neighborhoods already have difficulty accessing ATMs and that the bill isn't needed.

Awesome, I always thought a good use of my tax money was so that leeching useless potheads can get their fix without worrying how to pay for it

You really need to get some Republicans in your state legislature, Lance.

But let me ask you, how will banning the use of pot atms prevent them from buying pot if they just go to another atm not in a pot shop and get the money from there and then just mosey on over to the pot shop afterwards instead? Same thing with the gun shops, casinos, and liquor stores. They don't have to use the atms at those locations, they can get the money from an atm somewhere else and just show up at the locations they want to use the cash at. It's cash they're getting. They're not using a credit or debit card.

So the real issue isn't where they're using the atm card at, it's the fact that they're getting cash from an atm, period. You can't prevent someone from using cash. There's no reasonable way to track it. You have to come up with a better system. Something trackable.

It doesn't prevent them from using taxpayer funded welfare money to buy pot, no (nor lottery tickets, tobacco, beer, etc) but at least it makes it more inconvenient. The only way to prevent it is to go back to actual paper food stamps. As long as they give them cash and an EBT card that is good for use in ATM's, then we the taxpayers are gonna continue to get fucked.

Considering that atms are all over the place, how inconvenient can it be?

I didn't say completely inconvenient :nono:

What else are we as taxpayers supposed to do? It pisses me off to no end when I stop at 7-11 or any convenience store and see some welfare mom with 4 kids in tow buying nachos and Slurpees and paying for it with her fucking welfare card. And it happens with beer and liquor and it happens with tobacco products, and now it's going to happen with pot too.

the welfare twat-bitch that tried to sue my Mom, claiming my Ma punched her 15 times in the face....went to bingo 4 times a week and bought booze with her welfare money. In trial, she admitted to going to a bar after 'the incident', because she was so traumatized by 'the event'.

I agree with Lance...welfare checks, cards or funds should never be used for drugs or booze. They have to figure out a way to only allow the funds to buy food and clothes, not disposable cash

Why cant the feds just say they wont authorize payments to those places?

I think they have to change the payout system so these welfare ATM cards can't be converted to cash...easier said than done because users will say - I need cash for parking meters, coin operated laundry etc...

My philosophy has always been that if you drink, do drugs, cigarettes...the bad habit is yours, not anyone elses. No one should have to pay or suffer for your 'wants'...

Because it's cash we're talking about. How are the feds going to regulate where the people use the cash?

That bitch who tried to sue my Mom said...in a discovery trial with lawyers present - I can't make that court date in August...because I'll be on holidays.

Apparently both lawyers and my Dad exclaimed - WTF??? You're on welfare!!
