Glendale police have arrested a 16-year-old girl in connection with the strangulation death of a Phoenix man during what she claimed to be a consensual sex act, officials said.

The girl, whose name was not released by police because she is a juvenile, was booked Saturday into a detention facility on suspicion of second-degree murder. She remained there Tuesday.

Police were called to the 6200 block of West Olive Avenue on Saturday at about 5:45 p.m. on report of a injured person in an apartment. What they found instead was a dead 43-year-old man, officials said.

Sgt. Jay O’Neill, a Glendale police spokesman, Jason Ash had several cuts to his body and a cord around his neck.

Police first interviewed the teenager’s mother, who said she had been home for a time but left her daughter and her daughter’s friend, Ash, alone at the apartment.

She later received a call from her daughter indicating that she and Ash were involved in a consensual sex act involving strangulation, and that Ash was dead, according to police. The mother said she returned to the apartment, called 911 and attempted to resuscitate Ash.

Police said the 16-year-old had fled the apartment before officers arrived; she was taken into custody at neighboring unit.

O’Neill said the teenager confessed to strangling Ash during a sex act and to cutting him. Police are not releasing her name because it’s not yet clear if she will be charged as an adult.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.

I've decided that since this is statutory rape, and the death was accidental, she shouldn't be charged with anything.

How do you know the death was accidental? Because the 16 year old girl said so? :-s

That's fair. If, after investigation, the facts seem to be that her story is accurate, then yes, no charges. If there's no evidence of a sexual relationship, then yes, charge her.

PHOENIX – A 16-year-old girl who police say strangled a man during an apparent sex act has been charged as an adult with second-degree murder, authorities said Wednesday.

Jason Ash, 43, was found dead Saturday evening in a Glendale apartment. According to court records, he was discovered lying on his back on a bed with an electrical cord around his neck and cuts to his face, arms and body.

The girl's mother told police she left her daughter alone in their apartment with Ash, whom she described as a boyfriend of the teenager.

She said she later received a call from her daughter "stating she thought Jason was dead," according to a probable-cause statement.

The mother told police her daughter told her the couple was "playing sex games and he was cut on the arms and choked."

The girl told her mother they often used strangulation and cutting as part of their sexual activity and that "Jason did not say the 'safety word,' " police wrote in court papers.

The teenage girl was arrested at the scene Saturday. She was charged as an adult on Wednesday and remained jailed.

No attorney was listed for her in court records. A court date is set for next week.

The Associated Press is not naming the girl or her mother to protect the identity of the suspect because she is a minor and was not of legal age to consent to sex with Ash. Sex with a minor is a felony under Arizona law.

The probable-cause statement indicates the girl confessed to authorities. During an interview with investigators, she "admitted to causing the death of Jason Ash by consensual strangulation."

The girl said that "after she strangled Jason with an electrical cord, she began cutting him with a razor blade," according to police. "The first cut was an attempt to get a response from Jason since he appeared to have passed out ... She continued to cut on Jason in order to alleviate her stress from the situation."

Wow, unbelievable. The mother knew! How is allowing your daughter to be raped not child endangerment?
