Prosecutors say a Catholic school teacher found dead in his Orland Park home was stabbed 13 times by a prostitute after the two struggled with a knife in a dispute over payment.

Text messages on Alan Filan’s cell phone showed he had contacted a number that appeared on backpage.com on Jan. 18, described by Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney John Dillon as “an Internet-based service for adult entertainment.” Phone records and pictures on the website eventually led investigators to a Ft. Wayne, Ind., motel room where 20-year-old Alisha Walker was staying with two other people.

Walker, an Akron, Ohio, resident with two prostitution convictions in Cook County, was ordered held without bond on a charge of first-degree murder at a hearing Thursday at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse in Chicago.

Police went to Filan’s home on a quiet subdivision street Jan. 21 after officials at Brother Rice Catholic High School reported the 61-year-old business teacher had not arrived for work. From a window at the home in the 9400 block of Georgetown Square, an officer could see Filan’s body on the floor of his kitchen, Dillon said.

Once inside, prosecutors said Filan had been stabbed once behind his ear and multiple times in the side of his chest, and he suffered cuts on his arms that appeared to have been inflicted as he tried to defend himself. Prints from a high-heeled shoe led from the body to the door of the house, Dillon said.

Dillon would not comment on details after the hearing, but his statement in court seemed to indicate a second woman was in the house with Walker at the time of the killing. Walker admitted she had gone to the house “after (Filan) had solicited, over the Internet, one of them to perform a sex act in exchange for United States currency,” Dillon said in court.

Police have said previously that two women went to the house, and Walker’s uncle told the Tribune Walker told him in a call from jail in Fort Wayne that she was with another woman.

The two went inside the house and “an argument ensued between the defendant and victim over money and the defendant and the victim became involved in a physical struggle,” Dillon said in court.

In a videotaped statement Walker said Filan grabbed a knife, Dillon said. Walker got the knife away from Filan and stabbed him 13 times, Dillon said.

Filan taught at Brother Rice for nearly 40 years, and coached soccer at Andrew High School in Tinley Park. The business teacher is part of a prominent family that includes his sister, Cook County Judge Denise Filan, and his brother William Filan, a Democratic lobbyist. The family has asked that funeral arrangements be kept private, officials at Curley Funeral Home said this week.

Backpage.com has become the main online platform for prostitutes, and its share of the market has only increased since craigslist.com voluntarily stopped accepting ads for “adult services” like escorts and massages, authorities said. Ads on the site feature photographs of scantily clad women with promises of “erotic experiences” and obvious code words for payment, said Cara Smith, who heads up online prostitution stings for the Cook County Sheriff’s Department.

While she would not comment on Filan’s case, Smith said the sheriff’s department has made some 565 arrests of prostitutes using backpage.com since 2009.

“It’s like shooting fish in a barrel,” Smith said of the sting operations, which typically involve simply sending messages to phone numbers listed in backpage.com ads and waiting for the prostitute to arrive.

“In all those hundreds of stings, never has it been the case that someone showed up for a legitimate service. Never was an escort just an escort. Never was a massage just a massage.”
