MIRAMAR—

Somerset Preparatory Charter Middle School went on lockdown Tuesday morning after suspicious items were seen in the street in front of the school, a Miramar police official said.

"It was pillows," Miramar police spokeswoman Tania Rues said of the incident that caused students and personnel to move to the rear of the school and blocked Pembroke Road and side streets for a little over two hours.

Rues said there had been a report of a woman who was seen placing an item on the side of the road.

"A school official contacted police, and the woman was no longer on the scene when our officers arrived," Rues said. "As a precaution, we contacted the Broward sheriff's bomb squad to investigate."

The bomb squad did not find an explosive device, Rues said. A Miramar police photo showed a plaid shopping bag that had contained some of the eight or so recovered pillows.
