View Full Version : Where are you on the political spectrum?

This was done a few different times at AS and I was just curious to see where I come out again. This is a different quiz (I believe) than was used at AS last time.

http://i.imgur.com/Bzhgx.jpg

I came out a little farther right than I thought I would be, but I am about where I thought I would be on the libertarian scale.

http://www.gotoquiz.com/politics/political-spectrum-quiz.html

Note: there are 2 parts to each question....you need to choose an answer and then choose the degree of importance the question holds for you.

holy frigged up and pointed questions, batman. I find the nature of the questions to be leading one towards a certain subset of responses...I canceled out of taking this, I found it to be...a shitty worthless set of questions, for the most part - anytime you have a question where you can give out a few answers that are "closest match" for purposes of the quiz yet still do not reflect reality, its skewed and a waste of time.

I'll be honest here... I look at some of the freaks around me, and it makes me nervous sometimes as well... But really it's not a right I want to lose.. The govt. over here steps on our freedom enough as it is.. Thats all we need is these career politicians thinking they're some form of royalty and refusing to leave office... Yes, this quiz has an ulterior motive and if you accidentally take it, you will be tagged for life :roll:

na I wasnt insinuating some ulterior motive...just pointed shit like

-If our leader meets with our enemies, it makes us appear weak.
Even if it is with them surrendering? Pointedly a cover for Obama saying he'd meet and talk with anyone.

-Unions were indispensible in establishing the middle class.
Disagreeing means there'd be no middle class?

-The rich should pay a higher tax rate than the middle class.
Based upon what sort of tax system? Income, as it is now, yes, but not so ridiculously progressive as our tax structure is presently. Crap like this you can hold the same position yet respond a few different ways depending on the particular set of circumstances.

-School science classes should teach intelligent design.
Should this be required in curriculum? I dont think so. Do I have a problem with a teacher bringing it up and having a discussion in class? Not at all. Another where you can respond multiple ways and still hold the same position.

-It is not government's responsibility to regulate pollution.
Central government? (no) State government? (yes, if the population decides it, that is where our laws are applicable, not with the feds.) How to answer that one?

-Gay marriage should be forbidden.
As opposed to "civil unions" conveying all of the same rights, yet leaving the traditional word unmolested? Again, you can answer multiple ways holding the same belief.

-It should be against the law to use hateful language toward another racial group.
Is it legal to harass? Nope. Can you one off say damned near anything you freakin want? Ya damned straight. Another one that is vague and unclear.

-It is wrong to enforce moral behavior through the law because this infringes upon an individual's freedom.
Are we talking free speech, killing, length of skirts...?

-Toppling enemy regimes to spread democracy will make the world a safer place.
:roll:

-It is not our place to condemn other cultures as backwards or barbaric.
Even if they're hellbent on killing us?

-When corporate interests become too powerful, the state should take action to ensure the public interest is served.
early 1900s monopolies or General Electric of today?

You are a far-right social libertarian.

Are you familiar with the Political Compass? It is a system of measuring a person's political orientation not with flat left or right definitions, but by measuring with left and right as well as libertarian and authoritarian concepts, thereby creating a much more fluid picture of who you really are.

The test is six pages long and a series of statements, you simply mark your level of agreement or disagreement with each concept. It has no agenda or political alignment, it is simply a metric presented as a neutral self analysis tool. It only takes a few minutes, the site itself estimates 3 to 5.

http://www.politicalcompass.org/index

Anyway, if you want to take it and post your results here, feel free. You might be surprised where you wind up!

I considered not posting mine right away, but here it is anyway. I've taken this test several times over the last decade or so, and always wind up basically where I am. I think I drifted a little more left and a hair to the top since the last time I did this, but the difference is marginal:

Economic Left/Right: -7.38
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.23

http://i41.tinypic.com/30kaw6f.png

~~~~
Also, I was right about those slight changes, these are the results from when I took the test several years ago. I do not have the graph only the text:
Economic Left/Right: -6.25 / Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.79
EDIT: Mugzy over at brokenjam managed to dig up my AS thread on this topic, which had one of of my other scores from two and a half years ago archived:
Economic Left/Right: -6.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.44
This tracks through time as:
Economic Left/Right: -6.25 to -6.75 to -7.38
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.79 to -5.44 to -5.23
So, my oldest is about ten years, the next two and a half years old, and finally the one I did yesterday, they show a clear migration pattern, one of very slow but consistent change, I have been drifting a bit to the left (though I'm already heavily left to begin with), and have been moving a bit towards authoritarianism (though I am still well anchored in libertarian territory). The shift towards being more liberal makes sense...I was raised republican and spent most of the nineties deeply split between conservatism and my nascent liberal tendencies. By the time I first took that test a decade ago I fully considered myself liberal, and have been progressing further away from conservatism since then. I cannot quantify the slighter drift towards more law except to say I see value in regulation of corporations and feel we need stricter laws dealing with animal abuse and violent criminals.
EDIT: I just made this in the mighty MS PAINT program!!!
It shows where I was with a blue dot, you can trace my modest migration over the years:
