A hold-up at a Gary, Indiana social club for seniors ended with the 23-year-old shooter himself getting shot by a 65-year-old man.

The gunman entered the Safe and Sound Social Club where seniors were gathered peacefully playing dice on Wednesday night, the Chicago Tribune reported. Wearing a hoodie to hide his face, he opened fire at the guests.

"Pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow," said the club manager, Willie Lay, 69. "When you hear gunshots, you know what time it is. We all ran to the closet."

Lay said that everyone ran into the closet or lay on the floor, but the gunman kept shooting.

"The dude came in, told everyone to hit the floor. But the dude doesn't wait and starts shooting," Lay said. "He pointed the gun all around. He wasn't aiming. . . People were hollering and shots were popping."

One man, E.C. Robinson, 65, pulled his own gun on the assailant after he’d been hit.

"He shot him twice, that is when E.C. started shooting back," a witness told ABC.

E.C.’s bullets hit their target, while another man at the club also fired shots, missing the suspect. The shots drove the suspect into the bathroom, where he was found by police. He was taken to Gary Methodist Hospital along with E.C. and three other men who had been shot One was airlifted to another medical center and E.C. underwent surgery. The other victims were stabilized.

The police are investigating whether the gunman acted as part of a team. Lay believes he was with two others who were locked out when the first gunman entered through an open door as a guest was leaving the venue.

Both men who pulled their guns on the suspect had concealed carry permits—a factor that one witness thinks the suspect, who is believed to be from Chicago, didn’t foresee.

"We're in Indiana, they [are] from Illinois, they don't know people got permits to carry guns, so bang bang, that is what happened," Jessie Sturgis said.
