The 918 Spyder is a mid-engined two-seater sports car designed by Michael Mauer.[9]*It is powered by a 4.6 litre V8 engine. The engine is built on the same architecture as the one used in the*RS Spyder*Le Mans Prototype*racing car without any engine belts.

The engine weighs 140 kg according to Porsche and it delivers 608 horsepower (453*kW) at 8,500 rpm and 528*N·m (389*lbf·ft) of maximum torque.[7]*This is supplemented by two electric motors delivering an additional 279*hp (208*kW).[10]*One 154*hp (115*kW)[7]*electric motor drives the rear wheels in parallel with the engine and also serves as the main generator.[10]*This motor and engine deliver power to the rear axle via a 7-speed gearbox coupled to Porsche's own*PDK*double-clutch system. The front 125*hp (93*kW)[7]*electric motor directly drives the front axle; an electric clutch decouples the motor when not in use.[10]*The total system delivers 887*hp (661*kW) and 1,275*N·m (940*lbf·ft) of torque.[7]*As of October 2012 the engineering design is not finalized,[10]*but Porsche has given performance figures of 0–100*km/h (62*mph) in 2.6 seconds,[11]0-200*km/h (120*mph) in 7.2 seconds, 300 kilometres per hour (190*mph) in 19.9 seconds and a top speed of approximately 345 kilometres per hour (214*mph).[7]*The energy storage system is a 312-cell, liquid-cooled 6.8*kW·h*lithium-ion*battery positioned behind the passenger cell. In addition to a plug-in charge port at the passenger-side B-pillar, the batteries are also charged by*regenerative braking*and by excess output from the engine when the car is coasting. CO2*emissions are 79*g/km[3]and fuel consumption is 3.3*L/100*km (94 imperial mpg/78 us mpg).

The 4.6 litre V-8 petrol engine can recharge an empty battery on about one litre of fuel.[12]*The supplied Porsche Universal Charger requires seven hours to charge the battery on a typical 110 volt household AC socket or two hours on a dedicated Charging Dock installed with a 240 volt industrial supply. An optional DC Speed Charging Station can restore the battery to full capacity in 25 minutes.[1]

The 918 Spyder offers five different running modes: E-Drive allows the car to run under battery power alone, using the rear electric motor and front motor, giving a range of 18 miles (29*km)[1]*; the car can reach 93*mph (150*km/h) in this mode.[5]*Three hybrid modes (Hybrid, Sport and Race) use both the engine and electric motors to provide the desired levels of economy and performance. In Race mode a push-to-pass button initiates the Hot Lap setting, which delivers additional electrical power.[13]*The chassis is a*carbon-fibre-reinforced plasticmonocoque.

The P1 features a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged*V8petrol engine*that is only similar to the*MP4-12Cmotor in its displacement.[5]*The twin turbos boost the petrol motor at 2.4 bar to deliver 727*bhp (542*kW) and 719 Nm (531*lb ft) at 7500 rpm, combined with an in-house developed electric motor producing 176*bhp (131*kW) and 260 Nm (192*lb ft). With both motors, the P1 will have a total power and torque output of 916 PS (903*bhp) and 978 Nm (722*lb ft) respectively. The electric motor can be deployed manually by the driver or left in automatic mode, whereby the car's*ECUs*'torque fill' the gaps in the petrol motor's output, which is considered turbo lag. This gives the powertrain an effective powerband of almost 7000rpm.[6]*The car is*rear-wheel drive*with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Power for the electric motor is stored in a 324-cell lithium-ion high density battery pack located behind the cabin, developed by*Johnson Matthey Battery Systems. The battery can be charged by the engine or through a plug-in equipment and can be fully charged in two hours. The car can be operated using either the petrol engine, the electric motor or with a combination of the two. The P1 has an*all-electric range*of at least 10*km (6.2*mi) on the combined European drive cycle with a limited max speed of 217*mph (349*km/h).[1]

The P1 comes with Formula 1 derived features such as the Instant Power Assist System (IPAS), which will give an instant boost in acceleration via the electric motor, a Drag Reduction System (DRS) which operates the car's rear wing, thereby increasing straight line speed, and a*KERS. Both of these features (IPAS, DRS) are operated via two buttons on the steering wheel.

The P1 will go from 0 to 100*km/h (62*mph) in 2.8 seconds, 0 to 200*km/h (124*mph) in 6.8 seconds, and 0 to 300*km/h (186*mph) in 16.5 seconds, making it a full 5.5 seconds faster than the McLaren F1.[7]*It completes a standing quarter mile in 9.8 seconds at 152*mph (245*km/h). Top speed is electronically limited to 217*mph (350*km/h). The P1 weighs 1,395*kg (3,075*lb), giving it a*power-to-weight ratio*of 647*bhp/tonne. The P1 also features bespoke Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tyres and specially developed carbon-ceramic brakes from Akebono.[8]It takes 6.2 seconds to brake from 186*mph (299*km/h) to standstill, during which it will cover 246 metres. From 60*mph (97*km/h), it will cover 30.2 metres.[1]
