NITRO, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A mother from Putnam County is facing charges after police say she used a stun gun on three of her children.

Betty Basham, 34, has been charged with three counts of child abuse resulting in injury.

Deputies say Basham's oldest son told Child Protective Services that on New Year's Eve Bashmam came out of her bedroom with a stun gun and used it on him and his two younger brothers.

"It's a 3- to 5-second burst,” Sheriff Steve Deweese said. “It's very painful.”

Deweese said for a child, being stunned would be about as painful as a bee sting “times about 100.”

According to the criminal complaint he also said he and his brothers would be "whipped" with a belt by Basham on a daily basis. According to the criminal complaint, the day before the boy spoke with investigators he was "whipped" so hard he had trouble sitting down.

Deputies say officials at the boy's school had investigated claims of abuse in the past after the boy came to class with a mark on his leg that looked like a "bee sting."

A WSAZ.com crew went to Basham’s home along 2nd Avenue in Nitro to try to get her side of the story, but a man answered the door and said she wouldn't be commenting.

Those children are now staying at a relative's home.

The sheriff says Basham hasn't been in any previous trouble with child abuse. However, she has faced multiple drug charges in the past.
