New Zealand pop star Lorde and her new best friend Taylor Swift have rarely been seen without each other in recent weeks.

But the 17-year-old musician was quick to shoot down suggestions the pair were in a lesbian relationship in an interview with Kyle Sandilands on KIIS FM on Monday.

The Royals singer was on air to talk about her recently announced Australian tour when Kyle asked if she would be bringing her ‘new bestie’ Taylor Swift Down Under.

He asked the singer: ‘I see you guys’ pictures everywhere are you guys together now?

‘Not together as in lesbians, I’m not talking about “Ellen together” I’m talking about, like you guys are friendly right?’

Lorde was quick to fire back at Kyle, and retaliated, saying: ‘What do you mean you’re not talking about “Ellen together”, is there something wrong with lesbians?’

Sandilands responded: ‘Oh my god no, I would love that! Are you going to confirm now you’re in a lesbian relationship with her?’

But the Grammy winner wouldn’t take the bait, and refusing to be tricked into starting a rumour, told Kyle: ‘Don’t even try it.’

However Kyle, who has made a career out of trying to get people to dish the dirt on air, would not let the topic of Lorde’s close friendship with Swift lie.

He continued to press for more information saying: ‘I do love her though, we get along well with her. She’s very down to earth, right?’

There was an awkward pause before the Royals singer said ‘Uh… yeah’.

Kyle sarcastically responded: ‘Don’t go too overboard explaining the friendship then.’

Lorde, who by this point had had enough of the conversation said: ‘I won’t, believe me.’

The Kiwi songstress also opened up about her decision to turn down an offer to be Katy Perry’s support act on her upcoming Prismatic tour.

‘I think in the really early stages of any artist’s career it’s important for them to establish themselves for themselves,’ she said.

‘I’m just basically really stubborn and I want to be really independent and so I wanted to be headlining my own shows as opposed to supporting someone else.’

Lorde will tour around the country in April and May, playing all-ages gigs in Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Sydney, Newcastle and Brisbane.
