"The high concentration of Xenon-129 atmosphere, the evidence from Krypton-80 and the detected pattern of excess abundance of Uranium and Thorium on Mars surface, relative to Mars meteorites, first seen by the Russians and now confirmed by the Mars Odyssey Spacecraft Gamma Ray Spectrometer, mean that the surface of Mars was apparently the site of massive radiological events, which created large amounts of signature isotopes and covered the surface with a thin layer of radioactive debris enriched in certain elements relative to its subsurface rocks.

This pattern of phenomenon can be explained as due to two large anomalous nuclear explosions on Mars in the past."

How did the ancient Greeks and Romans know that Saturn is encircled by rings?(1) It is strange that this question was not asked before.(2) The existence of these rings around Saturn became known in modern times only in the seventeenth century, after the telescope was invented. They were first seen, but misunderstood, by Galileo(3) and understood by Huygens.(4)

If the myth did not by mere chance invent these rings, the Greeks must have seen them. The last case could be true if the Greeks or some other oriental people possessed lenses adapted for the observation of celestial bodies, or if the rings around Saturn were visible to the naked eye at some time in the past—today they are not visible without magnifying instruments.

The rings of Saturn were known also to the aboriginees of America before Columbus discovered the land; this means also before the telescope was invented at the beginning of the seventeenth century. An ancient engraved wooden panel from Mexico shows the family of the planets: one of them is Saturn, easily recognizable by its rings

Nor were the Maoris of New Zealand ignorant of them: “One of the great mysteries connected with Saturn is the still unanswered question of how the ancient Maoris of New Zealand knew about her rings—for there is evidence that they did have a Saturnian ring legend long before the days of Galileo.”

Because under certain atmospheric and proximity conditions, you can see Saturn with the naked eye (standing on top of a LARGE mountain)

Whats your plan after work ends? Taking some time off or jumping back into something else?

I don't have another job to go to and my 27 years of experience is pretty specific to this company...not much savings...

so yeah, I figure a good 6 month break  I'm still in full on freak mode to be honest...it seems so surreal.

saw my manager this past weekend and shamed him - Isn't this the part where you come up to me and ask me what you can do to change my mind???

he put his down, didn't say a word

I'm insulted to be frank. They usually announce long time employees' departures with a nice email....nothing yet for yours truly. So if it's a non-event, my last 3 days here will be a non event as well

Hal-9000
11-24-2014, 07:40 PM
seriously PCS...I have to get my body and mind back into shape. I've been lifting on concrete for almost 30 years so hamstring and back are gone...

and it has been stressful because of all of our internal processes being so idiotic (like my procurement/accounting dept often comes to me to ask - what do we do?)

I'm used to handling a lot of physical things coupled with about 50-75 emails per day....so I gotta step back from the ledge and try to adjust to the slowness of real life :)

I have an old person phone. No really, it's designed for the hearing and sight impaired, has a panic button and is indestructible. Voice and text only. I'm right smack dab in the middle of a two year contract and wondering if I can switch phones without taking it too deep up the fecal disposal unit...

I can 'upgrade' to a Nokia Lumia 820, which runs a Windows 8 OS and comes with some great useful apps and a good camera. And a slick onscreen keyboard so I don't have to do the 123 push thing on my Sgt Rock walkie talkie :x

nice five inch IPS screen, lot of flexibility with tiles and transparencies...supposed to be quite a good mid range phone. It ain't no Samsung Galaxy or iPhone...still, you can augment the menus until the cows come home and users seem to like it

In my 20's, I was living in small town Missouri and decided to take MENSA qualifying tests in Kansas City. At a family gathering, I told my brother how I drove 2 hours, tested for 4 hours, drove 2 hours home, and was waiting on the test results.

Bro: "I don't need to see the test results"
Me: "Well, thanks!"

speaking of which, sister is flying in tonight....her, my brother and I are taking my Mom to a full care facility on Tuesday...Mom has no idea what's about to happen. It's not a private home because we can't afford that...it's a provincial hospital run facility. Have heard some shitty things about those facilities...people stealing other people's stuff, staff not caring and giving the best care....oh man

The other night I had a bad time with my Mom, stupidly let my brother and sister know...and now some of my Mom's behavior that night rates on the dementia escalation scale as needing to be put in a home immediately.

I keep thinking that if I handled the situation differently, my Mom could at least spend Christmas with us. She tried to hit me, she used profanity and actions I've never heard come out of her mouth before and then she left the house around midnight in her sweater and slippers. We have snow on the ground and it was cold.....and as long as I live, I'll never forget the image of her walking up the dark street in the snow, not looking back....without her oxygen. Fuck it breaks my heart to think about it now..

He's gone? sorry to hear man :(

When my brother and I weren't estranged we picked up a card that had the word bitch written all over it, about 100 times.

Inside it said - Thinking of you

gave it to our sister

 awesome.

Yes, he passed a few years back. Conventional wisdom is he drank himself to death... symptom, not cause. I tried, did a lot of traveling to get him straight over the years, sent him charged cell phones overnight when he wouldn't answer, sent the police for a welfare check when he didn't call back. Handled his estate, delivered his ashes. It was a really nice memorial. Since you have me reminiscing...

He was a life long UAW member despite his economics degree. I was the corporate whore anti-union guy at the time. We gave each other shit about it.

Neither of us had kids and one Christmas we were assigned the task of putting together a hobby horse. The process was to assemble the two halves and then put the two together. I was making far more progress.

Me: "why is the non-union guy making so much more progress than the union guy??"
Bro: Silent. Stopped working. Got on his stool. Lit a smoke. Took a drink from his Budweiser. Finally looked at me and said "fuck you, it's break time."

speaking of which, sister is flying in tonight....her, my brother and I are taking my Mom to a full care facility on Tuesday...Mom has no idea what's about to happen.

Finally got her back in the house, oxygen on and sometime during the night she disconnected the other end that attaches to the machine. She was crying and wheezing and had her head in her hands....I think part of her wanted to kill herself, because I admonished her so loudly saying that I never wanted to hear that language out of her mouth again and that it was sickening to listen to :(

At the very least, they should have brought him to trial for manslaughter. There is a no choke-hold policy, and that policy is there for a reason. Granted, it's not illegal per se, but they knew very well what could happen. Speaking as a former wrestler, there are many ways to take down and subdue someone. The police are well-versed in these tactics. That officer had many options in his arsenal. If worse came to worse, he could have tazed him. He knowingly chose a tactic banned and deemed unsafe which resulted in the death of a suspect. That is manslaughter, gentlemen.

This should not have happened.

Interesting... on CNN a guy explained that the technique is a "carotid restraint" trained on and used by most law enforcement and all federal agencies and not technically a choke hold at all. Unfortunately, he said, they manner in which they fell placed too much pressure on the windpipe resulting in his death.

I hadn't heard that before.

Also, I do not think a coroner ruling of "homocide" automatically means "intentional death". It simply means "death by an intentional act" - very different.

Irrelevant. The police are trained in multiple methods of breaking someone down to the ground and restraining them, with an emphasis in causing as little damage as possible. The method used here was banned, because they knew of the potential detrimental outcomes of using it. They had other options to get him down and they chose one that was banned. They knew better than to use it. The man was not armed and he posed no serious threat to the swarm of police that surrounded him. The force was excessive and unnecessary. Manslaughter.

I've decided the best way to watch the protests is to turn down the sound, turn on party music, and pretend they are celebrating and "raising the roof".

You actually watch protests? :-s

Ok, my apologies for being so obstinate, and you guys have to know that, because of members of my family being in law enforcement and having lots of friends in law enforcement, I would take law enforcement's side first, give them the benefit of the doubt. The problem is that you don't see what a grand jury sees that led them to their determinations, and going into that video knowing you're watching a man die, and it's in all likelihood because of the encounter, it's pretty heart-wrenching. Different camps are saying different things about the tactic used by the officer in question: a) it's a choke hold that's been banned by the NYPD, b) it's a legitimate take down maneuver that officers learn in training. Like I said, I'm more than likely to give the police the benefit of the doubt, if not for the video. To me, it looks like excessive force. Taking the stance that he committed a crime and brought it on himself, while very true, it's just not very human. Again watching the video, I can't help but feel that the NYPD's actions in this case were unnecessary.

Here's facts that have come to light that I've been turning over in my head:

- The NYPD was enforcing a ridiculously stupid law born out of greed and the Democrat's desire for a nanny-state. This law shouldn't exist. The police have better things to do. One could make the case that it's the Mayor's and the city council's fault that this guy died. If this stupid law doesn't exist, the police are out doing real police work elsewhere. Even in the most extreme of cases, without this law, the shop owner complains, the police come over and tell the guy to get lost because he's loitering. But he stays alive.

- This guy wasn't an angel. He did have a criminal record. I think news anchors have said that he had been arrested more than 20 times for various reasons. He was resisting arrest. Still, that doesn't mean he had to die. He didn't. Secure him in a better way and charge him with resisting arrest.

- This guy had health problems which, with the excitement of the encounter as a catalyst, was probably the reason he died. Asthma, clogged arteries, etc... and yes, there was no way the police could have known these things. Still, he's on the ground saying "I can't breathe" over and over again, and he's obviously in some kind of distress, which the police should have been able to recognize. They are trained in CPR and life saving techniques, and should be able to recognize the signs of physical distress. They should have called EMTs instead of standing around watching him die. Did any of them intend for him to die? Absolutely not. I absolutely can't believe that. But he did and it didn't have to happen. They could have helped him.

-DiBlasio's a fuckin' idiot for throwing his police force under the bus and turning it into a race issue. If the NYC voters have any intelligence whatsoever, they'll vote his stupid ass out the next time he's up for reelection.

- Every other politician and talking head that's turning this into a race issue needs to be shot for their sheer stupidity.

- The news media is wholly unreliable, and this case is highlighting that. You can see all of their biases from a mile away. It's really sad. They ruin lives and they should be held accountable for it.

- Should the one cop have been charged? I don't know. What I do know is that indictments are generally easy to get. The standards for an indictment are way below the bar of the standards of convictions. You can get indicted for murder on the basis of buying gum on a Tuesday, that happens to be an odd-numbered day of the month, while it's overcast and threatening to rain frogs from the sky. Seriously, indictments are easy to get. The video warranted it based on the way it pulls on the heart strings. So hand down an indictment, let the DA office take a hard look at everything, let them talk to everybody, then let them come back and say that they're gonna use prosecutorial discretion and they're not gonna take it to court because it is clearer than day in their mind that the cop did nothing wrong. But seriously, based on what I know about the entire process, it is absolutely shocking that the grand jury did not return an indictment. Like I said, you don't see what they've seen. I'd seriously like to know what swayed their opinion on this one. But we have to trust that the system works and accept the grand jury's determination, which is what I'm gonna do from now on.

Hindsight's 20/20. Apologies to everyone I've ticked off with this.

Nothing has worked except for nasal spray, and that is only temporary and I only use it sparingly because long term use during a cold reduces it's effectiveness and actually makes it worse. Plus I've been taking Claritin D daily and it's not helping that much either.

DemonGeminiX

Claritin D's not for when you're sick. It's for allergies.

If you eat chicken noodle soup, put a few drops of hot sauce in it. It won't cure you, but it's pretty good at opening up your nasal passages and increasing your circulation. When I get sick, I put Tabasco sauce on everything and my nasal passages always open up.

The best thing you can do for a cold is to get a few good nights' sleep. Take Thera-flu night time before you go to bed. They say zinc helps but I've never tried it so I don't really know. My hot sauce therapy works for me.

You don't want to get too dependent on Claritin D. Try my hot sauce trick. Pick up Thera-flu night time and take it 30 minutes before you hit the sheets.
