I have zero knowledge when it comes to this, never built a pc, never swapped out a drive etc........ most ive done previously is install new ram and swap out a case fan......... and swap out a gfx card

Just wondering........ this new ram i'm getting (3 x 4gb sticks), could i run it alongside the current ram? Currently 3 x 2gb sticks......... 6 slots in total............ that would be 18gb......... nearly enough to run the space shuttle

Yes each mobo has a ram limit.....mine may do 24 gigs.I think it's like the old days, as long as you put the same frequency ram in the machine and don't exceed the mobo limit, it will run.

You may have missed my comment in the other thread....there is nothing you can currently do on that PC that will use more than about 5 gigs of ram...even then, that's when you're encoding movies or de-rezing planets with the Death Star

I understand...you got empty slots? Damn well fill them up!

Since you've left, I've saved the most important little tidbit of advice. You do know that ram comes in dual channel and triple channel? Meaning that if your mobo is dual channel it will want 2 or 4 or 6 or 8 sticks...if it's triple channel you want 3's, 6's, 9's etc

Yeah..the wife ran over something (she doesn't know or won't say what it was) in a parking lot yesterday morning. Ruined the rim ($500Usd from Dodge) and the tire ($195Usd from Discount) So, the car has been in the tire shop since yesterday. Today, on the way home from work, I see s jet of water coming over the hood of my truck. Not good. Pull over and stop, found a huge crack on the radiator tank. So I begged a ride home from a co-worker, sis-in-law is on the way so's I can use her truck to go fix mine. Stopped and bought a radiator and fluid on the way home ($250Usd)

KevinD
09-14-2011, 12:48 AM
Ah, not too worried about the vehicles. Shit happens. Just tired of replacing these POS rims SRT (Dodge) put on this car (3rd one so far, only 1 covered by ins) Mostly I'm just bitching about all the $$ I've had to shell out this year:
Re-leveling house: $2,200
New washer/dryer and dishwasher: $1,800
Normal (to me) Suspension maintenance on the truck (along with AC repair): $2,400
Repairing house AC: $900
Replacing water well: $1,800
Still don't know how much kitchen repair is gonna be. I'm guessing $2,000-$5,000

Just tired of hemorrhaging money this year. Granted, could have spent less $$ by getting inferior stuff, but, you get's what you pays for.
And yes, at least I can do the radiator on the truck. Tire shop has to do rim/tire. I just has to pays for it, but no labor charges.

Being a homeowner can be expensive when it comes to maintenance. I'm having the old wiring replaced in my house. The electrician started today. I've already spent about $200 on materials and have more to buy but the wire was probably the most expensive so the labor will be the next larges cost.

KevinD
09-14-2011, 01:12 AM
Ugg, replacing old wiring is a pita... I need to do it at my mom's and a good friend wants me to help with doing his house as well. Unfortunately, I do not have a residential license but at least both houses are block and beam wood frame construction and the old wiring is in attic.

Southern Belle
09-14-2011, 01:21 AM
My house was built in 1960. The guy figured out today that some of the wires run up from the receptacles to the ceiling and some run horizontally receptacle to receptacle. I'll have sheet rock to repair when he gets finished. Will be glad to get it done.

KevinD
09-14-2011, 01:32 AM
iirc Mom's was built in the 40's. It still has the woven insulators on the wires running through the attic. One wire for line, one for neutral, and no ground. Dunno yet if any run horizontal through the walls. I've got a fishtape so verticals won't be too bad, just waiting on the weather to cool off some, and for a good night on a weekend to change out the breaker panel outside.

Exactly...I knew I should be hungry, but because the pain was so intense, I didn't nearly feel hungry at all. Certainly not like I normally would after not eating for 2 days.

And even though most of the pain is gone, I have stuck with things that are for the most part soft and easier to chew, just so I don't put a lot of pressure on my tooth.

How'd you fuck yours up?

I was driving home some friends from the bar (I was at home, not drinking) It was a Weds night, 8pm, clear and beautiful road in the summertime.
I was driving a 72 Dodge Coronet that had front end problems, my sis and bro both had the car before me and they tried to solve the front end problems, no avail...

Anyways was driving home from downtown, took an upwards merge ramp off a main road with a gradual curve and felt the car lose control in the curve.I had a choice either hitting a bridge abuttment
or avoiding it and driving down a hill into oncoming traffic.I chose bridge abuttment and it folded up the hood almost to the windshield.

No seat belt, started getting ejected through the windshield and then the large steering wheel prevented that and broke my femur in half...no fracture or pussy shit like that, broke it in two.
We all were unconscious, the battery started on fire and some good Samaritan hauled us out of the car.I remember trying walk on it, down this hill we were on and my leg folding backwards at the knee....twice.
I thought - oh shit, I broke my knee  and then realized that knees aren't built like that.

Luckily, the girl and the guy I was driving home suffered far less serious injuries than I did..

You?

Mine was asinine and somehow, miraculous. Still don't know how the force did it but yea.

Was on my dyno comp heading to a friends house down an alley way, was carrying a foot pump with me cause he needed to pump up his bike tire.
http://i54.tinypic.com/30vg8xg.jpg

The alleyway had a T intersection, some drunk ass came out in front of me, and I flipped over the hood of his car, landing on the foot pump. That rubber pad wasn't there, and it was just a big square hunk of steel. Went into my thigh, cut through my quadricep, and broke my femur.

Was all she wrote for that summer, and few summers afterwards :meh:

Plates and screws are still in me. Dr's couldn't get at two of them without fucking with the muscle, and I didn't want to go through that again. My recovery process was kinda like yours, but I was in a wheel chair for 6 or so months before I went to crutches. The bone healing wasn't really my main problem with the recovery, it was the muscle therapy. That shit was like hell, and I had to go through it with zero fucking pain meds.

Does it have a switch on the bottom to change it from free scrolling to 'click' scrolling?

It's not a switch, it's a button. And it's directly beneath the scroll wheel on the top of the mouse.

Mine's a switch on the bottom of the mouse

That bites.

I can just press the button, scroll up really quick, press the button again to switch back, click the left mouse button, all with one finger.

I like it, I never switch...I always leave it on free scrolling

It's not a cam. It's a computer mouse. It has a button below the spin wheel. When you press the button, the spin wheel spins freely and you can zip up or down a large webpage or document really fast.

I didn't ask for the button, I just wanted a mouse that wouldn't eat batteries lightning fast.

It's not my fault they put the scroll-switching button on the mouse. But I like it.
