Hard to know. As a Canadian I have no issues going anywhere in the US even right after any of the recent events, but I'm very comfortable there and know these events are rare in the grand scheme of things. It doesn't feel foreign, I speak the language, etc. Going to somewhere like Turkey that would already be a totally different world, and then on top of that has some major issues with terrorism, seems scarier.

I guess applying that same thinking, there could definitely be folks around the world re-thinking plans to travel. Real shame... that's kind of a goal of terrorism isn't it. Causing terror and fear :wha:

A condo/townhouse sorta deal! We bought it months ago (come to think of it, I can't remember if I ever mentioned it here :lol: ) but don't take possession til Aug 17. Big upgrade from the dumpy, really old apartment we're living in with no washer/dryer or dishwasher

It's a 2-level walkout in of a new high-rise building in the 'cool' part of town. I like that because it has the sound-proofing and nice amenities of a condo like a gym, but no dealing with elevators.

It was a hard choice between that or a house way out in the suburbs but my wife works crazy hours at a few hospitals in the downtown area so we're not ready to be commuters just yet.

The government here just imposed a 15% tax on foreign buyers this month with no notice. Sort of wish I'd known that before we bought as it's speculated could bring prices down 5-10%... Personally I doubt it - there's not nearly enough supply in this city even among locals for prices to go down far. There's very little new construction happening which is the real issue. Foreign buyers are only 5% of sales, despite being the scapegoat to blame for high prices.

Either way, we've got a great mortgage, big down-payment and are in it long term even if there's a larger dip... I do worry about my friends who could be underwater on a 10-15% dip though.

Just added the step-kid to my insurance policy at work because I have the better insurance between me and the wife, plus I make more and it's easier for me to absorb the cost. Now with the kid on my insurance, the cost for the company is $765/month for just me and her. Good thing Obamacare is around to lower insurance costs. :|

All I can say is thank fuck that the company pays my portion of the insurance 100% and all I have to pay for is the added amount for the kid, which is still $221/month.

Just had an interview with a much larger company. Slight step up in the position and salary but nothing really crazy, just a lot more opportunity for advancement. Seems like a good place to work too, flexible hours, up to 4 weeks vacay. I only took the interview because a Recruiter found me on Linkedin and sold it to me.

Also had my quarterly review with my current boss today and everything is going really well. We're restructuring and it sounds like I'm getting placed on the new team I wanted to be a part of. Only been in this current role a year too (with the company 4 years though). Feels too soon to be leaving still.

So torn. Going to have a beer and think about it over the weekend

Good days off so far. Started off rocky with wife going to ER the night I came home. She's okay, thankfully. Diagnosed a bad fuel pump in my truck that my daughter is driving to work and college. Cheap(ish) fix. Also did a full tune up, radiator flush, oil and filters. Almost drives new again, lol. Got some yard work done, including new sprinkler system in front yard. I've got to rant though...

So we have a pretty sick rental apartment right now. Good location and near the big teaching hospital so very sought after. We heard that this friend-of-a-friend who is also a Doctor is looking for a place, as she just moved here. Our rental market is insane (like 0.6% vacancy rate insane) and this girl is apparently too busy to attend most showings, so we hooked her up with our landlord who gave her a sneak peak at the place. I was here when she came by, met the landlord, liked the place fine and signed the lease & paid deposit on the spot. PERFECT! Helped an acquaintance, and now don't have to worry about constant showings by the landlord. Get two birds stoned at once.

Not to paint us as saints... but we even offered her to both a) move in early (as we'll be gone before lease is up) AND b) have our perfectly good kitchen table, a dresser, and bed-side tables as we've ordered new stuff.

So Dr. Space-cadet comes over a few days ago to look at the furniture we're GIVING her. She shows up 40 minutes late, then sits out our couch and makes chit-chat with us, asking all sorts of paranoid questions about the landlord, her lease agreement, etc (hows this our problem?). I told her listen, we've been here 3+ years, love this place, rent has only gone up once - no complaints. I try to show her the furniture and she just wants to make stupid small talk. This weirdo sits on our couch and makes awkward talk for almost an hour. We were very pleasant but it was strange....

Anyways she finally leave and made no commitment to taking our furniture after all that. I still said text me and let me know if you want any of our furniture, no pressure, and I'll also let you know when we're gone and you can move in two weeks early.

So today, of the blue, I get an email from the LANDLORD today saying "Ms __ backed out of her lease, we're starting showings of your unit this weekend" :| That little prick didn't even have the decency to tell us herself she was backing out of the lease, not taking any furniture or our generous offer to move in early.

Fuck sticking your neck out for people man. I hope she lost her $700 deposit.

I just got back from my first minor league baseball game. The Jacksonville Suns. Farm team for the Miami Marlins. It was fun, albeit a little dangerous. I was in the stands around 3rd base and was wide open for a foul ball or loose bat to come up and brain me. But I guess being a sitting duck is all part of the experience. Some lady three sections away and a few rows down from where I was got hit by a line drive foul ball and it broke her hand. Scary.

I think the next time I go, I'm gonna try to get in one of the stadium boxes, if I can. A lot safer. Either that or I'm gonna have to buy a glove and be ridiculously vigilant.

Prices weren't bad at all. I think the whole spiel cost me between $25-$30.

The home team (The Suns) won. It was 3 - 1 in favor of the Suns in the beginning of the 9th, when the away team, the Mississippi Braves opened up and scored 3 runs to make it 4 -3. The Suns scored 2 in the bottom of the ninth to make the final score 5 - 4. Clutch. Just as exciting as an MLB game.

Yeah, the stadium they have is really nice for a minor league team. You can tell the town really cares about having the team there. The only thing is there's very little protection for the fans, even behind home plate. So yeah, it's fun, but it's a gamble.

If you do go to watch a game, one bit of advice: Make sure everybody that goes with you brings a glove with them and pays close attention to where the ball goes after it's been hit. That woman that got hit was jacked up bad.

I just had a really twisted idea pop in my head.

My neighbor likes to target practice in his yard with garden gnomes. He buys one and he shoots the living shit out of it. He's gone through about 5 or 6 of them. It really is annoying as virtually all of his neighbors, including me, thinks he should go target shooting at a range instead of his damn yard. His yard isn't closed off and if he fucked up, he could very well shoot somebody or through somebody's house.

How freaked out would he be if he woke up one morning and his entire front yard was populated by garden gnomes positioned facing the front door that he walks through to get to his truck to drive to work every morning? A bunch of garden gnomes just sitting there staring at him when he steps out his front door.
