Not right now. I could definitely do some of the slower parts, but I'll end up sore going for the faster parts. My speed and endurance is off. It'd take me a good 6 months of hardcore 4 - 5 hours of strict focused daily practice to get my technique and speed back where it needs to be to be able to pull off clean shred runs effortlessly. Right now, I can honestly say that I'm kinda fast, but not Vai or Petrucci fast. I can't do extended blinding speed runs like the best shredders can. I get worn out. I'm pretty much clean, but I'm lackadaisical about it, so an errant note will pop up here or there. Because I'm not playing professionally, I just don't care enough to take shredder speed and technique that seriously. Right now, I'm in a different place. I'm just starting to get back into it after taking an extended hiatus away from it. I can do the things that make me happy when I play for myself right now. However, if I got into a band, it wouldn't be enough. Glad I'm not looking to get into a band right now. :lol:

A couple of years ago, one night, I was about to propose to my girlfriend when my roommate Joseph barged into the room out of nowhere, tripped and fell over, breaking a glass table with his face. Totally ruined the mood. Now, I didn't know Joseph THAT well, don't even remember where he was from, but let' just say I put my plans on hold to help him through his injuries.

Joseph had gotten big glass shard in his eye, making him completely blind in that eye. He was walking around with one of those cotton pads on his eye for a couple of months. Then suddenly, he disappeared, along with my girlfriend

Apparently they'd bonded during the time after his injuries, and eloped together , left me behind without as much as a note. I tried to track them down, but never could.

So, impressions of new guitar?

It's a 2005 Ibanez RG 370DX in black. It has 24 jumbo frets, Ibanez Infinity pickups, and an Ibanez Edge III tremolo system. I got it for $220 ($170 + $50 shipping), which if I bought it last decade it would have been an absolute steal. Personally, I think I made off like a thief today. It's a used guitar, but it looks like it was well cared for. There's a few small scratches in a very small area of the back finish, not deep at all, but I don't care about stuff like that. If that bothered me, I could just pay somebody to refinish it, or I could learn to do it myself. The rest of the guitar looks pristine. The frets look fantastic for a 12 year old guitar and the fretboard feels stiff (i.e. stiff = brand new). It looks like they put new strings on it and set it up before sending it out to me. That earns the ebay seller 5 stars alone.

I've never used an Edge 3 tremolo system before and I'm currently not too fond of the tremolo bar, as it doesn't seem it can be locked in place, so it dangles. I'll have to play with it for a while to see how it works and if I can get used to it. If I can't, then I'll have to get a replacement for it, which will be about a $200 investment. I found a youtube video on how to set it up and make it play like a dream. This guy's saying this trem system's awesome where other people say it sucks, but he says it's because they don't take the time to set it up properly, so I'll watch his video in a little bit to see what he has to say.

The Infinity pickups are stock, and they'll pretty much drive me nuts eventually, so they'll more than likely be replaced with the DiMarzios that I use in my other Ibanez. Tone Zone bridge and Air Norton neck. I can't remember what I use for the middle single coil. I haven't priced them in a while so I'm dreading to see how inflation has influenced the price of them. I may replace the volume pot with a 500K pot. I did it on the other Ibanez and it made a big difference. The electronics will have to be shielded, but I do that with all of my guitars anyway so that's not a big deal. Honestly, I don't understand why guitar manufacturers don't just do that by default. It goes along way with keeping random RF signals from interfering with your sound. It seems like a no-brainer to me. A cheap no-brainer that would only take 5-10 minutes of a person's time.

I need to put a strap on it so I can play it without having it slip out of my lap. The fretboard needs to be oiled and the strings need to be greased, but I've said that about every single guitar I've ever owned. It has potential, it feels good and it resonates in my hands, but right now, it doesn't feel like an extension of my own body. They never do when I first get them. It's very rare for me to "connect" with a guitar when I first play them. I have to play and tinker with them a little bit to get to that point.

I can't believe this guitar is an '05. I keep looking at the fretboard looking for some kind of sign that it's used and I can't find any. If it wasn't for the small scratches on the back, I would swear up and down that this thing was brand spanking new.

You know, I'm reading up on this Edge 3 trem and everybody says that it's the worst Floyd Rose clone ever created so I might just block it off for the time being. I'm not the biggest divebomber to begin with. I did figure out how to tighten the trem bar so that it doesn't dangle though, so there's a plus.

I really like the body of the guitar and I'm actually getting to like the neck. The only thing I don't like about the neck is that it's made of multiple pieces of wood instead of just one solid piece of maple. Cost cutting. Industrial strength wood glue is apparently cheaper than a solid piece of wood large enough to cut a neck out of it. But if I was going to make my own guitar, I would use this body and neck as templates. I'm not too sure about the fingerboard. I'm big on rosewood and it is rosewood, however it's a constant flat radius, and I've come to appreciate the compound radius fingerboards found on Fender and Jackson guitars.

I also don't like the output jack not being top mounted like they are on Fender guitars, so if I made my own guitar, the output jack would be top mounted, but that's always been a complaint of mine. It's still a good guitar.

Trying to just get string bends down for now.

The rules I follow are these:

Without bending, fret and play your target note (what you're going to try to bend up to), listen to it, then fret lower and bend up to the target note. Don't try to bend further than a 3rd on the lower frets (closer to the pickups), and don't try for further than a 2nd on the higher frets (closer to the headstock). If you're way up by the nut you'll be lucky to get past a half step. Make sure the note that you're trying to bend up to is actually a scale note. Try for a chordal tone (1st, 3rd, or 5th... this is where you need to study interval chord construction) over the chord at first. You can hit other notes later when you know the progression and the chords that appear in it, and you know what kind of sound you're going for.

For prcatice, I'm using the intro lick to Gary Moore's "Still got the blues" what's bugging me is how (in different songs, or just noodling) you determine what note to bend to. Didn't know they made necks like that. My strat is one piece maple (no rosewood fretboard) and the LTD is mahogany with rosewood fretboard. Pretty sure it's constant wide flat. What I'm not used to right now on the LTD is the monster super jumbo frets. It's a vastly different feel compared to my other guitars.

Jumbo frets are fantastic for shredding. Medium frets are better for general playing, but they don't last anywhere near as long in the hands of a lead player. Bending wears down the frets little by little. My first Ibanez needs a refret job seriously bad (jumbo), and my Fender's getting there (medium).

Flat radius fingerboards are also great for shredding. The compound radius guitars are a happy medium: you have a more rounded radius up by the nut that's better for full chords, and flatter down by the pickups that's better for soloing. You get used to the compound radius faster, because the rounded radius up by the nut feels more natural for chords, especially barre chords. I bet the compound radius fretboard would be a bitch to carve out well by hand, though. It certainly seems like a job more suited for a CNC machine.

Work gave some of us a half day off to go help out at the food bank headquarters. I thought we'd just be sorting some can donations, but that place is fucking huge!!! 40,000 sq/ft warehouse, pallets to the ceiling like Costco. Guess they get lots of large donations from big grocers/wholesalers when trucks get in accidents or shelves fall and there might be some dented cans or whatever.

Ended up hauling around and sorting hundreds of cases of food. Feels good to help.... but ultimately it just reminded me how much better it feels to work hard than sit at a desk all day :lol:

Well, I didn't get much sleep last, wife woke me up in the middle of the night. She was lying on the bathroom floor doubled over with abdominal pain. She couldn't move or straighten out because the pain became more intense. So I told her that we should go to the ER and she agreed. I hurried up and got dressed and told the kid we were going to the hospital but when I went to help her get up and downstairs to my truck, the pain was too intense for her to make it. So, we debated calling an ambulance and while I was sitting there on the floor with her, the pain slowly started to subside enough where I could get her on the bed so she could lie down there. Then after a few more minutes the pain slowly went away. So we put off the trip to the hospital and she quickly fell asleep. Me on the other hand could barely sleep at all because I was worried about her. Woke her up before I left for work to see how she was doing and she said she was okay. And then she texted me a little while ago and said she felt much better and was going to work today.

Still no idea what the hell is/was wrong. :wha:

I saw a doctor twice for a problem I was having, appointments separated by about 8 months. The first time, the doctor was in-network on my insurance. The resulting bill was reasonable. The second time, all of a sudden, the doctor is no longer in-network. Nobody bothered to mention that little tidbit to me. I didn't find out until I got my insurance EOB months later. Been on the phone with both the doctor's organization and the insurance company ever since. The doctor's organization promised to cut me a break on the bill if they couldn't work shit out with my insurance company. Last week, I got a notice from my insurance company stating that they would under no circumstances pay this doctor. Today, I got the bill from the doctor's organization... $1006.00. For one appointment.

I'm disgusted. I'm... I just don't know.
