And that's why you don't buy an apartment (to me a condo is just a glorified apartment that you own and get none of the 'perks' of renting an apartment). Hopefully you get some satisfaction out of this GF but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Meh, buying a condo is as good move in Vancouver. Houses are unaffordable so there's no way to get a foothold into the market without starting on a condo. The good news is that my fees and mortgage aren't a lot different from what my friends pay in rent because our rental market is bonkers too (average 1-bed rent is $2k)... and my valuation went up 9% last year alone and we've now got equity, while friends pay their landlord's mortgages.

Anywho, I've written Strata my letter, thanks for the advice guys, I'll see where it goes

The katakana can be turned down to .5 watt. I've messed with one at GC, and I like it. I like the BB15 better, but, my skills don't justify it yet. I already have the katakana mini. That's a small battery or ac powered amp. It's actually quite nice, capable of a great range of sounds. Decent cleans and a righteous AC/DC tone.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving. You could always go buy a turkey and learn how to cook it... or a turkey breast, for that matter, as it would be cheaper and easier. Either way, you'd have turkey.

Well, tbh, it's kinda "free" money. I just cashed in rewards points from hotel stays over the years. Pretty sure I'm going with the katana. I actually liked my marshal mg40cfx sound, though I hated the efx controls. If I was younger, maybe going to play live/open mic, I'd choose the bassbreaker, but for my needs, I think the Kat hits all the marks. Just waitingot on the last gift cards to come in, then I'll have my wife order it. Should be in by next days off.

The funeral home that cremated my father puts up a granite memorial marker every year with the names of the dead in one of our city parks. They finished the 2017 marker this past weekend so my Thanksgiving consisted of going to see it alone. I took 94 pictures and then had a bowl of soup for dinner. Kind of a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving I guess, but it was a tough day for me. Thanks for the kind thought Dee.

I'm royally pissed at Firefox. All of a sudden after version 56 update, I can't view online flyers from grocery and retail sites.

I start FF in safe mode and can view the flyers again. I disable, then uninstall the whopping TWO extensions I have and still can't see them.

I try every safe mode troubleshooting step from using the default theme to disabling hardware acceleration and the flyers won't show in normal mode.

Got back into safe mode and the flyers are there. Safe mode is removing the problem, but I can't find out what the effin problem is

I check PDF viewer associations and try a number of new extensions on that subject, still no flyers.

You know what it was? If you go into the normal FF options/privacy and security/history and set it to "never remember history" and/or "always use private browsing mode" Firefox won't show those damn online flyers :x :x :x

Thanks Firefox, I had to uninstall my Classic Theme Restorer because you won't support that in version 57, and that means my forward and back buttons revert back to the left hand side of the task bar (grrrr) and I can't configure the browser with the buttons I want and need like refresh, stop and a handful of others.

So much for giving the users a choice via the open source browser. Bastards.

we may need a thread on turkey

Turkey, in my opinion has to one of the most overrated meals on the planet. It takes all sorts of prep time if you're going to stuff it, you need at least five hours in the oven for any reasonable sized turkey, and then people think they have to make 15 companion dishes because of the fuckin unspoken turkey mandate.

The juice just ain't worth the squeeze.

If someone offered me something disgusting like a pizza pop or I could have a plate full of tasteless turkey flesh...pizza pop wins every time.

Apparently it's the code they're using for 57 and beyond, and most modders can't or won't be able to use it. So there goes how many good, useful extensions?

That classic theme restorer was a godsend to me.

Did you happen to catch the reason for part of websites disappearing? It was the Firefox options and one I used without problem in the past.

Never remember history and/or private browsing mode. It somehow makes the slideshow pdf component not viewable on retail sites, primarily grocery stores.

I can probably live without online flyers from each store, but that's not the point. Your browser shouldn't create a black hole on the page without explanation.

Yesterday was not a good day.

It started out as a good day. It was the kid's birthday yesterday, we had some gifts for her, were planning on taking her out for lunch. It was actually a pretty typical Sunday morning around our house. It was Sunday, we didn't have a lot planned other than doing stuff with/for the kid for her birthday, just a typical laid back morning. Then, around 10:30, everything changed forever.

The dogs were laying about like they normally do and the wife had gone down to the floor to scratch and pet our dog Bullet. As most of you may (or may not) know, he was the most recent of our rescue dogs. He had been seriously abused for the first 15 or 16 months of his young life by the time he was rescued. And as some of you may know, he has had some issues and there was a point where there had been a couple of pretty intense fights between him and our dog Thor in the past. We even had come close to surrendering him to the rescue group back then. I left the decision up to the wife and she was pretty broken up about having to give him up, even though when the fight happened, that's what she was on board with. But she was upset that he would be tossed back into uncertainty and he would be confused and scared, so I told her if she wanted to keep him, we would keep him, because other than a few incidents, he really was a sweet boy and his past abuse was the reasons for his bad behavior at times, which wasn't very often. And despite the outbursts, I loved him too and really didn't want to throw him back into the system because 99% of the time he was the sweetest boy and he just would seek out love, affection, and attention. They say hindsight is 20/20 and I know why because after yesterday I wish back then I had put my foot down and we had gotten rid of him then.

As I mentioned earlier, the wife had gone down to the floor and was there to just give Bullet some attention, nothing out of the ordinary at all. He was acting a little weird, so she was attempting to get back up off the floor when it happened. For no reason, and out of the blue, he attacked my wife. I had my back to everything at the time and she let out a blood curdling scream and Bullet had his jaw clamped around her upper arm and was thrashing it. As my wife was back down on the floor screaming, and everything from this point was a blur as it happened so fast, I came out and charged at Bullet and I don't know if it was me or if he had realized what he had done (every other time he had lashed out, he was almost immediately sorry, you could tell by his actions) and he let go of her arm. He backed into the dining room table, knocking it and the chairs over. I was trying to back him up to his crate where he sleeps at night because if I can get him in there, I can lock him up. I'm trying to stgay between him, the wife, and the other dogs, because the last thing I needed now was a dog fight to break out. I was able to get myself between him and everything else and get him into his crate and lock him up.

Now I'm immediately turning my attention to the wife who is sobbing and back on the floor. I help her up, asking her if she's okay, what happened (she has no idea what set him off) and I help her upstairs so I can get her shirt off and check to see how bad the wound was. She was crying in pain as I got her shirt off and I can then see why, it was awful, it was the worst dog bite I had ever seen. I'm scrambling around for medical supplies and try and dress and wrap the wound as best as possible without trying to hurt her anymore than she already is and head off to the emergency room. It seemed like of course we hit every red light on the way there, I'm trying to get there as quickly as possible while the whole time trying to comfort her. We finally get to the hospital, get checked in and get taken back to one of the rooms. Questions and forms and bureaucratic BS to go thru, it seems like it takes forever as well. They had unbandaged the wound and I'm trying to get hold of the rescue group where we got Bullet from, because they are who we need to go thru if we have to get rid of him for any reason. And of course at this point, even the wife knows that we have to give him up.

But, for documentation to the rescue group, so they didn't think we were exaggerating, we sent them a photo of the wound. It's below in the spoiler tags, but be forewarned, it's pretty gross.

https://i.imgur.com/0APA5d8l.jpg

It took quite awhile at the ER, there were a few more pressing emergencies that came in while we were there, so because it wasn't life threatening, we got moved down the list, which was understandable. But off and on during the whole ordeal of lying there with gaping holes in her arm, after being attacked by a 130 lb dog, my wife was lying there in the hospital bed crying, upset that we were going to have to get rid of Bullet. We've had him the shortest out of all the other dogs in our house, but he was still a part of our family and having to send him away was tearing her up inside. Meanwhile, I'm trying to hold it together, trying to tell her that it wasn't her fault, and that we'll deal with everything as it comes along and all she kept doing was crying and worrying about Bullet saying, "but that wasn't Bullet, not the Bullet we know." I just kept trying to tell her to think of happier things, don't swell on what we have to do later.

By that time I had heard back from the rescue group. I figured that they were going to have us either call animal control to hold him until they could find a place to take him, or that they had already found a place he can stay in the interim. It was worse than that. She expressed her heartfelt sympathy for what had happened and she was sorry to tell us this, but in the name of safety, Bullet would need to be put down. She couldn't in good conscience rehome him since he has a past of the violent outbursts, even though they were few and far between, and because of the severity of this bite. She said that we could call animal control to have him taken away or if we felt safe enough, we could take him to our vet and have it done. I know that telling the wife that we had to put him down was going to break her heart because even though he did this to her, he was a part of the family and she did love him, maybe more so because of what he went thru to start his life out.

Finally they get her stitched up, and I'm trying to keep her mind focused on other things other than whet we were going to have to do very soon. And below is the after photo of the wound after they got her stitched up. It's still kinda gross, but not as bad as the before pic above.

https://i.imgur.com/nNBHRX1l.jpg

As we're wrapping things up and getting ready to go home, at first the wife wanted animal control to come get Bullet, but that didn't last very long. She said that we will see how he is when we get home and if he's not being all mean, we'll take him to our vet so that even though it was a horrible thing to have to do to him, at least we would all be there with him. We got home, made sure the other dogs were outside, and I went and uncovered his crate and he was standing there, tongue hanging out, tail wagging. I let him out and he immediately got next to me an leaned in hard to me. Tentatively the wife came over and he sniffed her and started to lick her face. He was back to being the old Bullet again and he was acting like he was very sorry for what happened. Of course, this just made things even harder. But, we made the decision to take him to our vet. So I called to make sure that they even did this type of thing on Sunday (usually they only do emergency care on Sundays and they are closed for regular appointments. But they would be able to help us out.

So, we grabbed a bag of treats, his favorite toy and grabbed his leash. He was so excited to be going on a trip, not knowing what was going to soon happen. They were waiting for us at the vet and ushered us into the special room they have specifically for this procedure. We have seen the room from the outside many times, but never seen the inside because the door is always closed. We have seen people leave the room, always crying, so we always knew what happened in that room, but we never thought we would be in it, not this soon anyways. Inside there's a large dog bed in the middle of the floor covered with a nice soft blanket. One of the techs comes in, does the paperwork, talks about what happened, and tells us how things will be going. Bullet was his usual happy self, excited that he was somewhere else other than home. We're all surrounding him, scratching him and petting him and giving him love. The wife says how this is so unfair, that Bullet needs to lose his life because of the assholes that abused him while he was a puppy. The kid was crying, I was crying, the wife was crying, it was awful. The vet came in, talked a little bit more with us about the procedure (they will give him a sedative that will make him sleepy and eventually knock him out, and then they will come in after he's out and insert a catheter and administer the final drug. We can either be there for that or not, that was up to us, but he said with his pets that he has had to put down, not even he likes to be in there for that part. Sometimes they gasp, sometimes they twitch, and it can be disturbing. We told him we'd decide at the time whether we would stay for that or not.

https://i.imgur.com/DreuK9ol.jpg?1

So they gave us a little more time to spend with him before they came back with the sedative. The vet injected Bullet and we could watch it take effect. Slowly at first, but it started to work faster and he was getting wobbly and finally had to lie down. The kid was crying so hard by now, the wife and I were both on the floor, scratching him, telling him what a good boy he was and that we knew he was sorry. I read people's accounts of having to do this, and it's sad and hurts to read about it, but being there, having to do it to one of our dogs, it was so awful. I've been crying off and on as I write this, more now than at the beginning. He laid down on his side, he wasn't moving much now. We kept scratching and petting him, letting him know we were there. I told him he was a good boy and that we were going to miss and him and that nothing was ever going to hurt him again. His tail twitched, he had heard me I think, but it was the last time his tail moved. It was the last time he moved at all, other than the rise and fall of his chest from his shallow breathing. None of us could hold it together now. The vet came back and asked if we needed more time, that they were ready to administer the last injection. We decided that we didn't want to be there for that, we wanted to remember Bullet like he was right that moment, peacefully sleeping. So we each said our final goodbye and we left.

I honestly think if I knew who the people were that abused him so badly, that he still had these kinds of reactions in the back of his mind, that I would do very bad things to them. This poor dog, our beautiful dog, lashed out, hurt a member of my family rather badly, and earned a death sentence because of it. Our dog Bullet, that loved attention and scratches and walks and toys. He lost his life yesterday because a family of fucking assholes put him through so much abuse that even though he was with us for 18 months, he still couldn't get past it. Don't get me wrong, I know it had to happen after his history and the attack on my wife. God forbid he had gone after the kid instead. Of course I am still beating myself up over what happened because I should have not left the decision up to the wife when we were close to letting him go before. But it seemed like he was going to be okay and he was the sweetest boy and he had to die yesterday because of nothing we did, and nothing we could help him get past. We will all miss him, and even though the wife is the one that was attacked, I think she feels the worst because she thinks it's her fault, even though I kept telling her that it wasn't. But that feeling will always be there inside her, I just hope I can help her get passed it. I just tell her to remember all the happy and fun times we had with him. Remember Bullet the way he was 99% of the time. But she's taking this the hardest I think, even though he attacked her, she still loved him unconditionally.

If you get an external USB enclosure that can house the drive, there are live disks with utilities that may be able to recover the data you need off of it, provided the data you need wasn't stored on the corrupted sector of the drive. The live disks are kind of old, but I have used them in the past. I'm thinking of Hiren's Boot cd and others. Some companies might have newer ones that I'm not aware of.

I already had an HDD dock, not my first rodeo with transferring stuff from old drives when PC's fail  However, this one is problematic. Yesterday it would read the drive from the dock, but Windows wouldn't let me copy files because they were from corrupted sectors of the HDD. No problem, I figured I would let Windows see if it could fix the corrupted sectors this morning and worst case scenario, get some recovery software. But, wouldn't you know it, things don't always work out how they should. This morning, the drive will spin up in the dock, and Windows can see it briefly, but then it just disappears and Windows can't read the drive. Neither can either of the two recovery programs I downloaded to test before I paid for them. It's definitely working because it's spinning while the power is on to the HDD. And the dock's lights light up like it's starting to read the drive, then nothing. Is there something that I can use to read a drive that doesn't show up? I would have thought the recovery software would have "forced" the drive into being readable, but I guess not. :|

I've never been. Tried snowboarding once back when I was 15 or 16 when I was living in Vermont, but after a full day of beating the mountain into submission with my face, I decided that it wasn't really for me.

We went with our school in grade 10 to Fortress Mountain. I'm surrounded by Olympic class ski resorts and they tend to feature one or two beginner hills along with some pretty intense runs.

I took the little lesson, then promptly went to the runs that more gifted skiers use...and I only wiped out once. Run was called Canadian (frontside) and that's exactly what happened. I got air on the moguls at the top...and face planted almost all the way down to the bottom  The instructors were concerned.

I have a few friends that are serious skiers...I mean serious as in hitting the backside and off trail runs that aren't monitored by anyone.

One crazy guy wears the avalanche belt GPS gear and goes deep into the boonies.

He got caught in a snow slide and was buried up to his waist. Dug himself out, made a fire...took off his skis and had to hike back up to a common trail hours later. Ski boots make that a little difficult. So when he relates the near-death experience to anyone, his eyes light up and he smiles like it's the best fucking Christmas ever

I remember...

Sitting in the backyard during the summer with the radio on listening to songs like Crocodile Rock, Rock the Boat and Kung Fu fighting. It was a different time because everything seemed to mean a lot more. We would wait to hear a certain song on the radio, and then freak out because they played it...that day. If you wanted to hear it more often, you bought the album. And albums usually contained seven or eight so-so songs, along with your favorite two songs.

A magazine was passed around if it had pictures or articles that were cool, no one bought multiple copies. A phone call was a big deal because to go hang out with a friend, you usually just walked over to their place and knocked on the door.

A toy was valued and kept for years. No replacements. My GI Joe had missing fingers, hair shaved off and a missing foot. If he was a vet, he would have had six Purple Heart medals. I had a toy called a 'Verti-Bird', which was a helicopter on a two foot stiff cable that extended from a central hub. It only spun around the hub in a clockwise direction, but you could dictate the height it flew at and make it hover with the controls. I had this building set that was pre-Lego and it featured little empty square frames, corner joiners and various 'wallboard or see-thru plastic glass' squares that fit into the frames. The possibilities were endless when creating a house or skyscraper or whatever. Tonka trucks were made of metal and over a foot long. You could sit on them when you were small and they never broke.

Playing a board game was an all afternoon into night thing, complete with snacks and pop. When you went home after, you were tired and satisfied from the experience. Your friends were your friends without condition. It took a family move or a death usually to end childhood relationships. We played sports all day long and no one got dehydrated or mad if they lost. We had Kool Aid and instant forgiveness.

Some kids had more things than others, and there was sadness and embarrassment if you had less than, or a crappy version of the in-thing. But it never stopped the less fortunate kids from playing with kids who had everything. There were levels and this built-in kind of respect of where you stood without ever talking about it.

When someone's Mom would call a kid's name to come in at night 'from miles away', no one would tease the guy or laugh. We would all be genuinely disappointed and feel a little sorry for him because he had to go 1/2 an hour before everyone else.

Riding bikes, playing war, playing sports and games, watching movies...it all meant something because it was real.

I feel sorry for kids today. They have everything and do nothing.

Last week, another neighbor said they killed a pygmy rattler in their driveway. It looks like we moved into a subdivision built near a pygmy rattlesnake breeding ground.

Nah, I'll just use my sword for that.

Seriously, they are hard to spot. If they start rattling, and you can hear it, that means you're already way too close to them. Gonna have to keep my eyes peeled whenever I roll outside.

For real.. you need a 20 gauge shotgun.. haha

That's a little further down the pipeline. I already have the 12 gauge, and I bought a recoil pad for it, so I'm good for now.

I'm looking at picking up a .308 hunting rifle right now, but the sale is on the S&W M&P shield subcompact, which I've been thinking about getting but haven't committed to. But the sale is ridiculous. $288 for the 9mm with no safety + an extra 2 8-round magazines. Free shipping to the FFL. A deal like that doesn't come along that often. But it's something I really don't feel that strong about acquiring right now.

Every single month, the in-laws insist upon having a get together (which is a story for another time :meh: ) and this month's was at the Outback. The food was mediocre at best. The service was sub-par. It was pretty awful considering that this place considers themselves to be a "steakhouse". And yet this place (at least the one closest to my place) is constantly packed. Yeah, maybe they were better, I don't go there hardly ever any more. Plus now there are much better choices for steak around town. For about 10% more (give or take) we can go over to Longhorn Steakhouse which is about 100 yards away and get awesome service and amazing steaks. Hell, even the last time I went to TGIFriday's and ordered a steak it was better than the one I had at Outback yesterday.

Surprisingly Outback always has a standing room wait to get in there... Speaking of Longhorn, my wife and I got this "porterhouse for two" the last time we were in there. That sumbitch was beautiful.. It looked like something Fred Flintsone would eat.. The sides alone for it were a treat.. The cut an entire head of garlic in half and grilled that and you could squeeze it onto your portion of the steak. If you get a steak at that level you definitely need to try their house prepared sauce for it. It doesn't come from a bottle. They make it there and like roast it or something and it comes out in a little bowl... Wonderful..

I thinks its like 30 ounces..

It was some old lady, I'm guessing at least in her 70's. It was obvious that she had NEVER used one before because the clerk manning the self-checkout section had to show her how to swipe the bar code over the scanner to ring up the item. And not only that, she had fresh produce with her that typically doesn't come with bar codes, so the clerk had to show her how to put the item on the scanner to weigh the item and then how to look up the item in the system. I think it was apples she had, and of course there's like a dozen different varieties of apples, so the clerk had to ask her what kind of apples they were. FFS just go thru the regular check-out line!

Well, an update on the crashed HDD that I haven't been able to recover. I tried several trial versions of highly rated recovery software and none of them would work. They couldn't "force" the drive to be read. The drive would only show up briefly when I turned it on and it spun up, but then it would disappear and it couldn't be seen. So, I was down to really old school stuff to try before giving up, or trying to do something mechanical to it. I put it in the freezer for a few hours and froze the drive. Put it in the dock and on it came! I ran Windows error check and repair and it made it all the way thru the process and said it repaired the drive. Right now in the middle of transferring over the first batch of files to see if it works. So far so good though.

Pain in the ass Lance, but I find this fascinating. It obviously has to be a heat related issue if freezing the drive allows the recovery software to access it. Too bad you couldn't do a portion at a time, then refreeze/repeat.

I didn't use the recovery software (yet) on the transfer. I just tried a straight copying of files and it copied 97% of what I had selected before it quit on me again. So that's exactly what I'm going to do. It's back in the freezer now and I'm going to try again later. Saw on the news last night, not only does the new iPhone X start at $1,000 in pricing, if you crack your screen and need it replaced, it's gonna set you back $275 (plus tax). :shakehead:
