Stranger danger fear I guess. All the towns and other groups (churches, Moose, Elk, etc) all put on 'safe' trick or treati events for kids. We haven't had any kids come by in the last 4 years.

I had 150 mini chocolate bars and kids started coming at 5:45...I was out of candy by 6:58  I gave the kids three each.

Two little people absolutely broke my heart.

hal *puts three bars in girl's bag*
girl - Can I have four please. I need four.
hal - Sorry sweetie, I'm giving everyone three.
girl - Can you just once give out four, I love the Smarties and we don't get them at home.
hal - How about if I give you five then, all Smarties?
girl - No I really need f... YES THANK YOU, thank you!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hal looking at about four or five kids on step - I'm sorry guys, I only have two little chocolate bars left...not even anything left for me. Who wants them?

*toss bars in random bags*

Smallest girl in front reaches into her plastic bucket, pulls out about three pieces of candy and holds them up to me - Here mister, these are for your snack.

hal -   No thanks hun, you keep them.

We had 100 kids. Just 1 candy each.

Some memorable moments - 2 very cute new moms dressed as Maverick and Goose (Top Gun in case you didn't know) with babies in hand. There were lots more pre-school age kids this year...we got only 50 kids last year and then there were a lot of teens.

A lot more traditional, home-made outfits this year (pirates, princesses etc.)

Had 2 giggly boys ask for candy a 2nd time after about 15 minutes. As they were leaving I said "you think you got away with coming back a 2nd time didn't ya?"

It was raining/snowing and almost every kid had some form of adult with them.

The little girl offering me candy had a Mom standing behind them, laughing her head off and said no worries ___ could share with___ at home

It was a total barrage of people in one hour and good vibe despite the crap weather.

:empathy:

Last year my registration fees were $627...haven't got the renewal notice yet, but it should come sometime this month because my registration runs out in December, and I'm expecting it to be between $500 and $550. In Colorado, you pay 'ownership tax' based on what the county tells you the value of your vehicle is for the 'privilege' of driving on the shitty fucking roads and sitting in mind numbing traffic every day.

He had no way to contact anyone or get assistance, and ended up borrowing a phone from a kid working at the car wash to call roadside. The roadside took 45 minutes to get there and less than a minute to open the car. Wasted several hours on that doozy!

a) there aren't any.
b) you can't make a collect call to anything other than a traditional landline which is authorized to accept collect calls.

My dad did this once about 4km from home, cell phone and keys locked in the car. He had to ask about four places to borrow a phone, and when he finally found one he could only remember one or two phone numbers (because cell phones have killed this skill tree in life). Nobody picked up so he had to hoof it back home. He was PISSED

My Dad left me his car, average low end 2014 Buick. It had the Onstar feature, which I canceled. Apparently Onstar can unlock your vehicle remotely anywhere in the world and also locate the car in case no one can contact the driver.

Well, it's been 3 weeks and a day since we lost Bullet because of his behavior problems which I posted about in this thread. The wife has been really upset since we had to put him down and still partially blames herself even though it is not even remotely her fault. We've been visiting the local animal shelters just to look and visit with some of the animals, but she has really wanted a new dog to replace the hole that exists without Bullet in the family. So, just on random chance we visited a shelter on Saturday and there was a 6 month old puppy that had just come in the day before. He was a stray and had been on a hold while they tried to see if someone had lost him. He wasn't chipped or anything, so unless someone came forward looking for a lost puppy, he was going to be put up for adoption. That day ended up being the day before our shelter visit. The wife and the kid fell in love with him almost immediately. And I have to admit, he's pretty damn cute. So, we spent about 30 minutes with the puppy in the 'meet and greet' pen at the shelter debating about getting another dog. I could tell she had her heart set on it, so I told her if it's what she wanted, then we should get him.

So, we got him :)

The shelter had named him Hank ( ) so when we got him home, we decided to change his name since he hadn't learned Hank yet anyway. We figured since we already had Thor, we'd name this little bundle of energy Loki.

We don't know how big he will get, the shelter thinks he's a lab mix. He's 30 lbs right now, so if he's more lab than whatever he's mixed with, he will probably be a medium sized dog. He's super sweet and bonus, already housebroken. No accidents yet in the house or in his crate overnight (keeping him crated at night until we can trust him with free roam of the house).

Just make trips to the shelters and check out the local rescue groups, I'm sure you will find one or six you wanna take home  Plus, the animals like the attention when they get visits at the shelter.

Three of the four dogs we've had and both cats are all rescues. The two cats and the newest pup Loki came from local animal shelters. Pepper and Bullet (RIP) both came from a rescue group. We would have gotten out Saint Bernard from a rescue group as there's a Saint Bernard rescue in Colorado, but when we put in an application, all we got was a form letter back that didn't indicate why we were being turned down :wha: I'm pretty sure I know why, but it would have been nice if they would have said then we could have gotten past it and adopted from them. But, since I really wanted a St Bernard and hadn't had one since I was a kid, we went thru a breeder. Now, so long as you do your research, breeders aren't necessarily a bad thing. Yes, there are the ones that just feed into the puppy mills and are completely despicable. But, if you do your research, you can find reputable dog breeders out there, and sometimes, if you have your heart set on a particular breed, that might be the route you have to go. Biggest drawbacks with breeders is the price, they are usually super expensive, depending on the breed.

But, if you do your research, you can find reputable dog breeders out there, and sometimes, if you have your heart set on a particular breed, that might be the route you have to go. Biggest drawbacks with breeders is the price, they are usually super expensive, depending on the breed.

Absolutely, I completely understand getting the breed your heart is set on. My wife's dogs growing up were mostly rescues and were great, smart, healthy mutts.

But I had wanted wanted a golden retriever my whole life, and so when my parents finally caved and let me get one, I had to buy him from a breeder because I couldn't find one to adopt. It was a nice little family that had been professional breeders for decades with a great reputation. Our pooch was actually a bit older, 6 months, as they orginally wanted to keep him as a show dog but he ended up being too small for a male to show. This place wasn't a puppy mill by any stretch of the imagination. That dog was so sweet and beautiful, and lived a long fairly healthy life. I know rescuing is the right thing to do but dammit I want a golden retriever so bad

Isn't there some law about companies that email you without permission?

I recently got so fed up with all the emails from places I've shopped at once and went on a huge tear unsubscribing from about a dozen of their email lists. Well lo and behold, about 3-4 of them have continued to email me two weeks later. I thought I'd heard somewhere that they'd instituted fines or punishment for that... maybe it was just a nice dream...

I think that when you supply your e-mail address, somewhere in their terms, you are giving them the right to contact you in perpetuity. And I have no idea how well those 'unsubscribe' links work. I've read that they are actually used to verify that your e-mail address is valid and they will keep e-mailing you regardless. I think you may need to actually contact a CSR to get it to stop, and even then I'm sure it's probably not easy.

The easiest thing to do is to flag those messages as spam so your spam filter will learn to send those right to your bulk mail folder and they won't clutter up your inbox. Also, you can always register a Yahoo of Gmail address and use it specifically for shopping online, that way you aren't getting bombarded with spam in your main e-mail account.

We're thinking of getting a home equity loan and paying off debt, so I went on Lending Tree to see what they had to offer, figuring it would be easier to go thru them instead of individually contacting several different lenders. No sooner did I hit 'send' then my cell phone burst into life with phone call after phone call. I must have received 30 calls in the first 5 minutes after sending my info. I had to actually start blocking numbers because they wouldn't stop calling. :|

The phone is never 'free'. Under the contract plan, they have you locked for two years if you upgrade your phone for 'free'. With no contracts, you pay for the phone but are free to change your plan or cancel your service at any time. And I can't say for the other carriers, but T-Mobile here lets you break down the phone payments into 24 installments if you want, interest free. And you can pay it off any time you want.

I'm all about maximum real estate. I don't have a bunch of toolbars or a thick framed theme because I want to read what's on the page, not what's on the browser.

Thanks. I heard a good definition of feminism the other day. Feminism is about equality. It's all we need and all we should be asking for. It's too bad most modern 'feminists' get confused and start attacking males. We only want and need what women in the 60's started trying to achieve.

The quote was from a woman and I'll be god damned if I can remember who. It was simple and she stated the point well I thought.

That's 3rd wave feminism and I agree with those goals. Beyond that it became about dominating and belittling men.

Don't know if it's important to you but whether or not it will play video via usb is a big deciding factor for me. many of the cheaper sets wont do it. I have a 2tb and a 1tb plugged into mine, all my movies and tv shows at the click of a button.

The one I was looking at had 1 usb port. I'm not sure how far you can go with it. The LG model I'm looking at has 3 USB ports, and the reviewers in the comments section give a complete rundown on what they do with them.

The TCL has a native Roku interface and it has HD10, or whatever the hell it is. I have an LG TV now (26" 720p), and to be fair, its menus are cumbersome. I haven't bothered withe USB ports on it.

May have bitten off more than I can chew. I decided that since my brother in law really liked the sound of my old Marshal MG30cfx, and it got a bit ruined in the flood (speaker okay, just the particle board case got wet and swollen) I'd make a new cabinet for it. Just bought the wood today, and waiting on grill cloth to arrive. I'm not going to tolex it, just stain and wax the wood. It won't look like a Marshall when I'm done, but hopefully will look good.

* Got injured at work, arm so bad I helped him carry things inside, some permanent disability I was told. The suddenly, packages start arriving. He loses weight, grows a beard. Then a brand new Camaro appears in the driveway. Haven't seen a single sign of the arm disability since.
* He's a terrible apartment neighbor. He stomps likes he's in a John Philip fucking Zousa band. And when he finally takes his shoes off the throws them down with a crash. Then drags furniture across the room. Every god damn night.

But this is what prompted the post:
* He yells at his grandfather and disrespects him. The same day I posted that here, I heard him call his grandfather "a fucking piece of shit" about 6 times in a short rant. He'll scream at him if he doesn't like something when he comes home. It's terrible and more than slightly abusive. If this sounds good, my next will be building a cab for my boss katakana 2x12. I love the tones from the Kat, but the ergonomics suck for me. I'm open to build others by request. You'd have to send me your amp, and tell me how you want it to look. I may have a retirement plan going... lol

In this case, a cabinet for a combination amplifier. Slang is fun sometimes, yeah? Lol I've built a new cabinet to house the amplifier and speaker for my old amp. I'd decided to do so, and give it to my brother in law as he's always loved the sound of the amp, and as practice to possibly build my own amplifier.

Ah, gotcha 'mate' :)

You've got a refined eye for woodwork. Keep up the good work!

This is the raw wood I started with. I had a specific, old 50's Sears and Roebuck look I was going for, and I really liked the characteristics of this Ponderosa Pine.

First rough cuts:

The rest was sanding, shaping the edges, 3 coats of stain (2 different colors) 5 coats of wax, burnishing to OEM shiny black plastics for a more worn look, etc.

What an end to the week. My little bro plays on my hockey team. He had a breakaway in our late night game, when some stupid fuck tripped him from behind. He went flying leg-first into the boards and crushed his tibia in his leg below the knee. Broke it in at least 4 spots. Poor kid knew it was broke right away but didn't want an ambulance. The boys hauled him back to the bench and he sat there trying not to pass out for the last couples minutes of the game

After that we carried him to the locker room where he had a couple beers and helped him take his gear off before being taken to the hospital. I knew he was the tough one in the family but he took it like an absolute rock star. The ER doc didn't understand how he was so calm after seeing his mangled X-ray.

The ER put him in a cast right up to his hip and he'll see an Orthopedic Surgeon on Monday to find out if it needs pins, which I'm sure it does because when he adjusted his cast last night on the couch, he could actually feel bones crunching around (my dad said he heard it) :puke:

Fuck I feel sick to my stomach for him. Going to miss a lot of work and the rest of the hockey season, and he'd just rented an apartment to move out of home at the end of this month... I might hunt down the guy who tripped him...

Yikes, sorry to hear about the bro and the busted leg GF. I broke my femur and had it pinned so I've got that tshirt.

Funny story of coincidence:

A friend and I were at the drive-in one night smoking a fatty, we get a knock on the window. Dude wants to borrow a rolling paper. So we invite him into my friend's truck for a bit. Guy starts looking at my friend strangely and then blurts out, "Number 18 from Trails West???" My friend (who is about 6'3'' and 230 lbs) says yeah, who wants to know?

Turns out my friend was playing defense on that team and creamed this guy into the boards. No boarding, crosschecking or roughing call, clean hit. The hit broke the guy's collarbone

Guy goes on to tell my buddy he had to take a year off hockey because of it, lost the scoring and points title for two years, and still has pain issues.

My friend says and I quote, "Well man, you shouldn't have tried coming up the right side."

They sold out their stock of the rifle twice. If they get it back in stock for a third time while the sale is still going on, I'm buying it.

We got up leaves today and had to drag them down to the street on a tarp. Days like this where I can feel my age. Im moving mighty slow right now.
