On a more serious note, there's parts of Canada that don't prepare for snow. Our roads are curved down on each side to help accommodate run off when they're plowed or when the snow melts.

I've heard places like Texas and Las Vegas don't do this with their roads and then suffer if/when stuff melts. My sister (who lives where GF came from) got a whack of snow one Christmas. Shut down the entire community. Then, the next day when the temps went back up to normal, they were flooded out because the sewers and roads couldn't handle the volume of water.

Like I always say....A little snow for a couple of days is neat and fun. A lot of snow for months is a form of punishment.

Jeez don't get me started. We had (and currently have) a mayor who claims that. "Not enough money in the budget for snow removal" and my personal favorite " We didn't suspect there would be this much snow". We've only had winters since....I don't know....the BEGINNING OF TIME :lol: So when our politicians make those claims, we the people tend to remember the lie...

They never clear our residential streets and one year the snow ruts were so big, we couldn't drive down our front street. In fact half of our city was impassable. Next year...we had a new mayor :)

What they also do is plow a road, then leave the plowed snow at the side of the roads claiming they don't have trucks to take it away. Yet, 180 miles north in a city our size, they do just that every year.

Not sure if it's accurate but the furnace people measured the CO in the house at 600ppm and she was told 700-800ppm can be fatal. She'll have the blood toxicology report in a couple days.

Check your CO monitors folks. This really cold weather has furnaces working overtime and a malfunction could be deadly.

I've always suspected our furnace as it's original with the house. We have a CO detector down here and two smoke alarms in the house. Kind of a weird story.

The night we set our clocks back in October one of our detectors started chirping every 15 minutes or so...at around 5am. I won't get into the details, but trying to figure out which one left three detectors with batteries ripped out and covers off :lol:

Bought new batteries, things were quiet. Then the same thing happened again two weeks ago. One of them started chirping at 5am, turned out it was the smoke alarm upstairs and again...all three detectors got dissembled so I could sleep. No new batteries this time because I had just bought some two months ago. Assembled detectors and the chirping stopped again.

All that to tell you that our CO detector down here has the same tone as a smoke alarm. I thought for a moment - I'm ripping out the batteries and what if it's a CO issue? :shock: I just tested it and the detector seems to be working.

I think any system that uses natural gas can produce it.

I was just reading about the symptoms. Sleepiness and headaches are prime indicators, but I assume your niece could supply more detail unfortunately.

Also, you're fortunate to live a building with other tenants. If it affects someone, you'll hear about it.

Back when I was in the biz, we found out most large shipping companies like UPS and Fedex routed most things through their central hubs. So I got a French Press for Christmas. It's a simple way to make coffee without using premade grounds and/or a drip machine.

The coffee snobs say you need to buy your own beans, buy a specific type of grinder, and use a very particular process to come up with 'a great cup of coffee.'

short version - grind beans, pour water over ground beans, wait for a specific amount of time, depress plunger and viola! Yummy coffee.


So Brilliance here (me), buys a ghetto grinder and some el cheapo beans to experiment with. Beans are Co-op's own generic brand :lol: Not exactly barista endorsed.

I bought what's called the Co-op French Roast beans and the description says - A dark bean with a smoky aroma, mild acidity and chocolatey hints in the aftertaste.

I grind up waaaay too much, the grounds I make are not uniform because of the cheap grinder (this is key for using a French Press) and I proceed to make two cups of ROCKET FUEL :shock:

The first cup made me grind my teeth, start shaking and wonder what the 7927651st place of Pi really was. Second cup, I'm sure the hair on my butt was sticking straight out.

I probably picked a bad blend to experiment with and my ratios were waaaay off in terms of coffee/water/steeping time :lol:


There is something attractive about making coffee with this thing. I just need to avoid the heart attack in the process.

You should use soft water, not hard water. Because trace elements in the water and you can't drink the coffee.

You must use a ratio of 1:10 or so many grams of coffee, per volume of water. If not, you shouldn't drink the coffee.

You must steep it for four minutes exactly. Under that time makes the coffee weak, over that time makes it bitter and over extracted. You can't drink that coffee.

If you expose the beans to air for too long, they are ruined and you must throw them out. No coffee today.

If you expose the grounds from the beans to air longer than the time it takes to make the coffee, the grounds have spoiled and become 'rancid'.

I swear...most of these people have a 200 dollar burr grinder, a digital scale, the most expensive beans sold and will not 'contaminate' their equipment with anything less.

Water must be at 200 degrees. Not boiling and not any cooler.

A few years back my brother took his first trip to Hawaii and it wasn't good.

He said they finished dinner one night and then all of the resort workers had these huge, spooky, too wide smiles plastered on their faces. They suggested that the guests walk up to an amphitheater on top of a hill nearby. Some guests moaned and said no thanks...the resort officials said we insist.

There was a tsunami warning and reports were it could be huge. So they all hiked up this large hill and were told they may be in danger. One of the resort people kept saying - It will only be from one to 24 hours, don't worry! Don't worry! My brother said the guy was smiling like a lunatic :lol:

Some minor flooding occurred at their beach and they were allowed to go back to the hotel after about four hours. My brother said the thing that bothered him was that no one was allowed to grab possessions from the rooms and they weren't told what the danger was until they were halfway up a hill. He said there was no organized plan, no high ground shelters in place, no transportation available to move thousands of guests to safety. He said it unnerved him because he never associated tsunami dangers with Hawaii and felt the management of the hotel was more concerned with tourism than safety.

Sorry to hear about your Dad Kevin. Gotta share some sad stuff that may help. My Dad started having breathing problems in 2015. Aug 2015 he had some X-rays and his doc said - 'These are just 83 year old lungs.'

His beathing got worse and in July 2016 he started coughing up blood one morning. We took him to the hospital. Four hours and one CT scan later he had cancer. Another week and few more scans and he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.

Doctor in emergency read the same report from those Aug 2015 initial X-rays and it said something about a large mass and other cancer indicators.
His family doctor totally missed it :(

We were since told that sometimes GP's miss the diagnosis because the X-rays mimic chest infections. A CT scan is the image to get.

What I have been struggling with and still find strange is how my Dad's family doc completely missed something, when a young emergency doctor who had never seen my Dad before looked at the same images and report, and he knew instantly to check for cancer.

Long one short, maybe get a second opinion for your Dad?

Yeah the material is compelling for sure. I've gone too far down the rabbit hole at times, listening to some pretty freaky podcasts that include real 911 calls, recorded court proceedings and sites that feature crime scene photos and information. There are a couple of videos on the net that I won't list here that show recorded deaths and I wish I wouldn't have googled them.

There's also a shitload of paperwork not usual of regular gun purchases. But here's the problem: Once something is added to the registry, the price skyrockets to ridiculous amounts. It used to be that machine guns were sold side by side with ARs, and at comparable prices. Now, because of the stigma associated with them being an NFA class 3 item, pretty much only rich people can afford them. So while it's not unobtainable per se, it's effectively banned for regular people who don't have a gazillion dollars. And it'll be the same with bump fire stocks if they get listed as machine gun parts or whatever the hell the ATF is unilaterally trying to do... which they shouldn't be able to, because they have no constitutional authority to do it. Not to mention that there shouldn't even be an NFA restricted list to begin with, or an ATF, or any gun control laws here in the US at all, because they all violate the 2nd amendment of the Constitution. Our government likes to wipe their collective asses with that amendment.

You forgot the fact that civilians can only own automatic weapons that were manufactured prior to May 19, 1986 and that anything made after that date is for military and law enforcement use only. So part of the reason for the high cost of purchasing an automatic weapon is that there is a finite number of them out on the market.

Short background is that both of my parents were very hard workers, and nothing was ever left 'undone' in our house. If something needed to be done, it was done.

Little hal decides to take out all of the slips, write some new ones and see if anyone notices.

I get in from playing one day and all of the slips are on the table, both of my parents are sitting there.

My slips say - bake lots of cookies, wash all of hal's clothes, make macaroni and cheese (a favorite of mine when younger), put in a swimming pool, make cakes with chocolate icing.

I am so bored. And apathetic. I've got a mess of junk DVRed that I don't feel like watching. I need to start going through my tax junk, and I don't feel like doing that. I got other shit to do as well, and I just don't want to.

Nagging advice comin' at you two boys here, but are you exercising? Nothing helps clear out that apathetic-yet-restless, cooped up feeling better. My grandma always said "the more you do, the more you want to do," and I think getting your heart pumping even just for 30 minutes is the number one way to reclaim some mental energy :thumbsup:
