Yeah, no bias in reporting at all. US economic growth numbers came out this morning. USA Today says "Economy grew at a weaker-than-expected 2.6% pace in Q4" while the AP headline states "US economy grew at a solid 2.6% rate in the fourth quarter".

Depends really, if it's not keeping things cold enough, you just keep turning it up until it does. After you defrost it, you can always put it on a lower setting to start and see how it does.

I read where they said the downstairs freezer should be the coldest possible in your house and anything from -10C to -20C is good. Zero F or -18C is ideal. I only have house thermometers and threw one in there yesterday as a test....it hit -22C before it tapped out

Might try doing it myself, although I really don't like fucking around with gas. I'm going to take a look at it closer this weekend and see if it's something I want to do myself. A lot cheaper going to Lowe's or Home Depot and getting a water heater and installing it myself.

You should look into the on-demand HW units. A little more pricey but you have endless hot water and they are more efficient.

Do your research, not all brands are equal. Also if you can find a tank that's EXACTLY the same height it makes it a lot easier to DIY. If you have to relocate the gas or water lines it is a lot bugger project.

I was looking at the Rheems on the Home Depot site to get an idea of prices. I will definitely take a look at where the lines are and the size of the tank before I buy, good advice that I didn't even think of before. But, I still may call a plumbing company to come and do it if I can get a good price. Like I said, I really don't like fucking around with gas.

I have the gas company coming in this week to do an inspection, then a private company to clean the furnace. It's over 50 years old and the private guy said they all develop cracks after 25 years due to how they were made. I just want to ensure it's not leaking CO and hoping we don't have to replace it like you did. The only 'bad' symptom is that the furnace is running too often throughout the day like it can't attain the heat the thermostat is asking for. On the plus side, the private guy is really interested in helping and said that old Coleman furnaces are built like tanks. If he can save it, he will.

My Dad used to have battles with parents parking in the back lane and dropping their kids off at the nearby school. I've encountered a few myself who parked in front of our garage and our garbage can.

I've actually had to go to the school (more than once) and get the principal to make intercom announcements asking if the parent with the blue minivan could move their vehicle...so I could get out of the garage and go to work.

I may be going full Gran Torino here in a minute.

:| Some women have sworn at me...right in front of their kids. Because they break the law and can't walk the 50 yards from the street instead.

Do it! :x

Some brief history:

My dear old Dad used to go out and yell at people. I tried to warn him that they knew where we lived, but we didn't know where they came from. One year he put down roofing nails on the little strip of grass outside of the fence where they typically parked. I understood his anger. We were responsible for the upkeep of the grass and the people had no respect. Then he gets two mysterious flat tires...parking in a garage

So over time, he got older and stopped battling with people. He used to put a rope up across our garage pad, because people used it constantly for turning around and it developed a crack. He would go out every day and connect and disconnect the rope. He eventually stopped that too.

Then he finally had enough. He got two railroad ties and placed them along the edge of the grass outside the fence. People stopped trying to park there in a hurry. One day some chick got high centered on one and thought to complain to my Dad  She called the cops, and the cops apparently said - This gentleman owns the land, he can do that if he wants. And by the way, why are you trying to park illegally on his lawn? And by the way, do you realize it's illegal to park in this alley (it skirts a park) and drop your kids off here? She was livid (I was at work )

Then my Dad called parking enforcement and told them that parents park illegally in the alley twice every day, at these times. If you want to write some tickets, come on by

I guess parking enforcement did write tickets..which caused another problem. The parents started parking closer to the school, while still in the alley, and then racing to and from to avoid the tickets. So my Dad again complained and said the parents were driving too fast down the back alley, and someone was going to get hurt. Parking enforcement gave my Dad no parking signs and speed limit signs and asked if he would post them on the telephone poles! So he did

Long story short, my Dad has fought the situation for years and finally gave up. You know I love and miss my Dad a whole bunch, so I have to decide if I'm going to continue the good fight.

And after writing this...I think I will

I went and asked the principal to make one of the intercom announcements, asking if the parent in the red Toyota could move their car, as you are blocking someone's garage.

Woman comes out after dropping off or picking up a kid and has a little girl with her. Little girl is probably around five or six.

The gist of what came out her mouth as I watched her from my garage with the garage door open:

You think you're a fucking big man. Telling the school on me and trying to embarrass me. Well fuck you. Fuck you you big piece of shit. I can park anywhere I want and you shouldn't complain. Things can fucking happen to you if you're not careful you know. I have rights you cunt (yes, she dropped the C-bomb).

*The whole time the little girl had her head down and looked like with every new sentence, she was going to cry. Like she had heard Mommy before and was embarrassed to be standing there.*

As the women was explaining 'her rights' to me. I said - Ma'am? Your car is parked right in front of my one door garage. I couldn't get my car out without hitting you...

Then she started another blue streak - So you're fucking threatening to hit my fucking car now??? So you want to fucking hurt me???

Lance, some of these parents are scary. I've luckily only met a few that have been ignorant to that degree. But it makes me wonder when people park right in front of a garage door or block our garbage can long enough so the garbage pick up guys didn't collect our garbage. Those people scare me because they think everything they do is fine, and don't criticize me or else..

People are saying what a great song it is and how her singing is amazing. if you listen to her version during the Grammys, it's pretty bad. She has no power and can't hold a note.

She has a nice, passable voice that I consider similar to Beyonce and Rihanna. When the song is produced well, they sound fine. But don't try to tell me any of the three are great singers.

That "warble" you hear I think is auto-tune. I sometimes can make it out on recordings but my daughter can spot it a mile away.

I can plonk away on a guitar OK, but she's got her own Jazz combo group, plays drums and tenor sax for the high school Jazz band and is doing percussion for the school play. Out of curiosity, what would happen if that furnace broke and you lost power? Would you need to start a bonfire in the middle of the living room?

Years ago I was here alone and it was a very cold winter night. Around -36C . The house was getting colder and the temperature inside dropped to about 10C. I could see the flames working in the furnace and the pilot light was lit, but it wouldn't circulate heat. Problem was the motor within the furnace that circulates the heat through the ducts.

To answer your question you call a furnace repair company. They show up at 3 am and rape you with after hours service call rates while they fix your furnace. If the situation is really bad, companies come in and replace your furnace for thousands of dollars.

Luckily we have a city gas company that will do inspections for free and advise possible courses of action. They won't fix your furnace, but will 'red tag it' if something is dangerously wrong like if it's leaking carbon monoxide. The city guy came before the commercial guy that night, told me what was wrong, what to tell the commercial guy and what to watch out for in terms of how the commercial guy would treat me. The city guy was correct with his predictions about how the commercial guy treated me. They try to stretch the service call out as long as possible because they have you by the balls in those situations. Both guys advised me not to go to sleep because it was so cold outside and the temp in the house would keep dropping if I didn't address the problem. It was a Tuesday night and I had to work the next day = pay the after hours service charges to get it fixed. I appreciate what homeless people go through sleeping outside. I was in an insulated home with no heat and it was getting uncomfortable. I could have gone to a hotel, but the furnace needed to be fixed so I just bundled up with winter clothing indoors.

Once I saw what the guy actually did (hooked up a new 1/2 horsepower motor and connected one ground wire) I was really embarrassed. But I couldn't have got a new motor anywhere that night and didn't know how to troubleshoot the problem as the furnace seemed to be running and kicking in every time I adjusted the thermostat.

My brother bought a huge home west of the city years ago. Him and his wife were true DINKS. They both had high paying jobs working at oil companies downtown, no children.

I recall him complaining to my Dad one night - We can only go out twice a week for dinner or movies (no internet back then), we don't have much money for our vacations, we only have ___of our rooms furnished in the new house, etc etc etc...

They were buying a three level split level home on an acreage, they had three vehicles, two snowmobiles, a boat and an ATV. And he's complaining to my Dad about not having enough entertainment money  My Dad almost lost this house because he bought a second hand hand car with a hidden lien against it while he was bringing up three kids and supporting a stay at home wife. All while working seismic and staying at camps all over the province, making VERY little money.

And true to my father's character he never said - Hey man, you got it pretty easy. Don't complain because your monthly disposable income is ONLY a few thousand dollars

And does not listen to anyone you've ever heard of! (Well, she does venture into rock territory by being an Artic Monkeys fan).

No, the term warble is mine for describing singers like Beyonce  They try to sustain notes and have to warble up and down as they try to imitate actual singers.

I can pick out auto tuning and understand what you're saying  Warbling is like a bad drunk trying to climb a staircase in the dark. More than a few popular singers do it.

I've an 18,000btu Remington cabinet heater that holds a 20# propane tank, It's great for heating a garage or for use in an emergency, it will raise the temp of my house quickly on high. I often turn the thermostat way down overnight and will use the heater to warm the house back up in the morning instead of working the furnace that hard.

In my story above it was surreal how the city gas guy predicted what the commercial guy would say, right down to the chain of events

I think his toolbox formed a cobweb....right as I watched him slowly open it...

Yea, it sucks when they try and milk it or rip you off. Last time I called a guy out he "condemned" my unit. Before he got 5 feet from it he says "uh-oh do you hear that?" and continued to tell me the heat exchanger was cracked and he could tell by the sound. I threw him out of the house, did some research found that his company had some shit reviews for exactly the same thing, that there was nothing wrong with my heat exchanger and that the problem I was having was most likely a dirty flame sensor. I pulled the sensor out, rubbed a scotch brite pad over it and reinstalled it. This was two or three years ago and it's been fine ever since.

Still had to pay the scam artist for a service call.

I lucked out and have been speaking to a young commercial guy who started his own company. He suggested I call the local gas company for their free inspection first, before he came out to do the cleaning/servicing. That way I could possibly save the 120 dollar service call from him, if the city guy finds problems.

I read the city guy's report to this young guy, he was impressed with how thorough the city guy was. (city guys usually just take readings and leave) My city guy oiled the motor, examined the various parts and used a mirror to look at the heat exchanger closely.

Young commercial guy has a camera to look for cracks and told me flat out - If the city guy didn't find any large problems, I could probably save the service call from him.

 I'm like - You don't want the business??? He's still going to come and look at it at my request, kind of a second opinion because I believe what he says about all older furnaces developing cracks. Mine is 55 years old and doesn't work like it used to...so I have no illusions what the commercial guy is saying/predicting is true.

One day I'll relay what happened that cold night with the other commercial guy...ffs it was like he was working from a script

That's exactly what I experienced, even some of the 1 start reviews had quotes from the guy that were identical to what he told me.

I know my furnace is nearing the end of it's life but I'm hoping to put my house on the market sometime next month, then it will be someone elses problem.

Similar to us. My siblings and I will be selling this place so we don't want to a install a brand new furnace if we don't have to.

It was nice to hear from the city guy that ours is in good shape. I was envisioning a furnace install during -30 weather.

Also, RBP's story about his niece being affected by CO was scary. I sleep approximately seven feet from the furnace room and was getting nervous.

I've also been running an electric heater to try and take the strain off the furnace, instead of running non stop, the furnace cycles on for a short time twice an hour. I'm praying the savings on the gas bill will offset the big increase in the electric.

You're selling too? Personally I'm just sick of paying so much for this place, it's costing me around 18k a year between mortgage and bills. I can live and work on the islands for 8 mos/year for less that 4k/year. I can split the remaining 4 months between helping my parents and my Aunt.

Are you planning on staying where you are or moving to a new city?

Everything went to my Mom after my father died. She's in a full time care dementia facility, so us three kids have POA and I'm currently looking after the house. I pay for my food, phone, internet, car, life stuff etc...while the estate pays for some of the utilities/house repairs. After my Mom passes away we have to sell the house as everything will be divided equally between us three kids. I don't have a job and can't afford to buy the other two out when the house is sold, so I don't really have anywhere to go or any prospects. That's why I'm such a fun guy to talk to

If you’re not in the United States you can still catch the game, although it will take a tiny bit more work. The verge reports that the Super Bowl will be airing on BBC One and Sky Sports in England, with streaming available via the BBC iPlayer app as well as BBC Sport, and Sky Go apps and websites.

In Canada you can see the game on CTV, CTV Two, and TSN and online via CTV GO’s app.

Same way for me in 2004 when the Red Sox won the Series. Although it was probably a little different because the Sox, unlike the Cubs, had been to the WS before (recently) and I vividly remember watching the 1986 Series and watching game 7 just slip away. I just stared at the TV completely numb. Then in '04 when the Sox fell down 3-0 to the Yankees and then steamrolled over the Cardinals, I wouldn't let myself believe what I had just watched until that last out had been long since recorded because at every moment, ESPECIALLY during the Yankee series, I expected the whole season to come crashing down at any moment.

We are/were for the most part. But it's getting worse and worse to live here anymore. Cost of living has absolutely skyrocketed. Between the two of us we make pretty decent money, but with the cost of everything, it's turning into a paycheck-to-paycheck scenario more and more. And the drugs and violence in the city is getting worse and worse. It's not on the level of someplace like Chicago yet, but ever since the legalization of weed a few years ago, the homeless population has just exploded, there are homeless begging on nearly every street corner now, even in the suburbs, and the violent crimes have become more worrying. Just over the weekend there were 3 more shootings in the city with multiple dead, all homicides. And just a little over a week ago, just a few miles from our house, a deputy sheriff was shot and killed when responding to a report of an attempted robbery.

And that's exactly it, the population of Denver has been growing and growing. Lots of people from California and Texas moving here, all with money jacking up the prices of everything. It used to be just the southern suburbs of Denver that was affected by it, but now it's the whole metro area. Even some of the outlying towns 50 miles or more outside the metro area are seeing the housing prices go bananas. Homes that shouldn't be worth more than $150K are selling for between $300 and $400K. It's crazy. And the average price for rent now in Denver is $1400/month because there are no empty apartments. They are filling up as fast as they can build them.

We are actually thinking of either Montana or Idaho, possibly North or South Dakota, but more than likely it would be one of the first two.

So do you think the homeless issue is directly related to the pot laws or due to people being priced out of their homes/losing jobs because of oversaturation in the job market, etc? I know the illegal issue is 100% related to liberal policies.

On the plus side with the overpriced real estate you should be able to make a good deal selling your house! Does your company have other locations you could request a transfer to or would you be starting from scratch?

The homeless population really started to expand when pot was legalized, and the more it expands, the more homeless we see, everywhere. I'm sure some of it is due to people being priced out of their homes, but unemployment in Colorado is low (2.9%) and there are lots of places still hiring all over the metro area, so the people that want jobs pretty much have them. And yeah, the illegals are because of the way the state is now. It was a red state when I first moved here and now it's solidly a blue state. And the city of Denver is a sanctuary city as well as some of the outlying suburbs. It's ridiculous. You can drive thru parts of Denver and think you were in Mexico instead.

And the place I work at is just a single location small business, but the good thing would be, like you mentioned, we would make out good on selling out home and have a nice chunk of money to put down on another one somewhere else and even starting from scratch, we would be able to get by without needing to make killer money right off the bat.

Also with the solid Red states you're looking at I'm sure companies are looking into expanding in this economy, You might be able to find something similar in pay.

Never did get to watch the game. Every streaming service wanted me to log into something and if I tried a VPN, they wanted me to pay for that service.

Did manage to find a great 26 minute recap vid that showed plays from every drive that scored and the important bits

It was a good way to watch four hours of football

I would have thought you might have an over the air antenna so you could watch it on your local CTV station since you don't have cable.

I've tried both TV's and they no longer pick up anything but static. The TV upstairs (14 yr old Sharp) had one of the best built in antennas made, now it's just snow

The reason is probably that everything is broadcast digital now over the air instead of analog. At least that's what they did here in the US and I bet Canada is the same way. You need a different type of antenna to pick up over the air stuff now.

Yeah I read about this a couple of years back and when you think about it, it's actually a step back in time.

Back when digital broadcasting was relatively new, my Dad's TV had three varieties of internal antennas where usually only one type was put into a TV.

It picked up extra over the air channels since day one and did it well.

I haven't tried buying an antenna since canceling the cable and living in the cave before time...

It's weird, but kinda nice living in Amish times. I have one radio and the computer. If neither are on the house is pretty quiet.

I got into full panic mode yesterday trying to get a live stream right before the game  Always had a fallback in the past...taught me a lesson about first world problems once again.

My Dad fought with a company over some sort of rebate, not a card.

He sent them multiple letters, faxed them info, endless phone calls...

I think some companies do this just to wear people down. At one point he gave up, but not after saying to me about halfway through trying - It's the principle of the matter! :x

I just got a disturbing phone message on the land line (I ignore certain area codes I don't recognize/anything from the States).

Electronic voice trying to sound normal."Yeah...give me a call. It's about a check we have for you...thanks very much."

Pretty sure they make all those hoops you have to jump thru and super long lead times to send them back to you so you give up and they get to keep the rebate money.

Time to leave.

Me and the wife discussed it even more last night. Before we were just kind of tossing the idea around, but now after talking more about it, I'd say the odds are better than 50/50 we will leave by summer.

Yup, the failure of the liberal policies keep piling up, but the bad stuff (of which there is a lot) gets swept under the rug. Denver is turning into a crappy place. I've watched it go steadily downhill in the 20+ years I've been here and there are no signs of it stopping. Especially since Colorado has had an uber liberal governor the last several years and the mayor of Denver (as well as other surrounding suburb cities) are openly pro-illegals and declare themselves sanctuary cities.

They just double down and claim that if they pass even more liberal policies it will "fix" everything.
