Check Youtube for work-arounds. In my car, the bumper supposedly needs to come off to replace the bulb. No it doesn't, I can take the whole case out and pop it back in.

I left for my shift and realized that I hadn't changed shoes, so I went back. I went out to the light the next time, wait, get my green arrow. As I started into the intersection, I realize the car in the near lane of cross traffic isn't stopping. I jammed my leg into the brake hard, then he did. All I could do is watch as the ABS kicked in and his car quickly shuddered to a halt about 8 inches from my fender. If I was ~4 feet further into the intersection and he didn't stop, I would have been t-boned in the drivers' side door. All afternoon I have been thinking about the millisecond difference in the two reaction times between no accident and the jaws of life.

Truck registration renewal came in the mail today. $357 fucking dollars. :meh:

 That's your yearly sticker fee?

Yup, the state of Colorado charges you an annual ownership tax that is part of your registration. It's based on the value of your vehicle. It was over $500 the first year I had it right after I bought it. :meh:

How hard was it to pick up? Seems like the picking/clawhammer style must be a pretty big learning curve.

DemonGeminiX
12-22-2018, 07:27 PM
No, not really... well at least not for me. I've been playing guitar for over 30 years now, and I've developed a pretty solid acoustic fingerpicking technique, not quite anything like banjo clawhammer. For the clawhammer, your fingers (actually, finger, you're only supposed to use one) go in the opposite direction. You're hitting the strings with your fingernail on a downstroke, as opposed to plucking the string upward with the pad of your finger. It's a bit confusing at first, but it didn't take too long to get the jist of it. I'm no expert banjo player by any means, I can pull it out when I feel like it, but I've had my Dad's banjo (actually, my Granddad's, it was passed down to my Dad after my Grandfather died, long before I was born) around for longer than I've had any of my guitars, so I guess you could say that that was my first exposure to any stringed instrument of any kind. I really don't play it too often; for the most part, it just sits in it's case in my closet. I've got strings for it and everything, I just don't really enjoy it as much. I keep it around as a family heirloom. It'll probably be passed down to my nephews when I die, at least that was the intent. Whether or not they hang on to it is up to them. They'll probably throw a bigger stink over my guitars, not realizing where the banjo came from. But that's how it goes, right?

We decided to spread some charity this Christmas. Included with 5 gifts and with another 5 for a Christmas Eve trivia game with family, we are giving 10 $20 charity gift cards. The recipients use the gift cards to choose a charity for the donation. The site has over 300 available charities and passes through 100% of the gift card value. They simply ask you to make an additional donation to them when you make your purchase.

https://www.tisbest.org/

We also provided gifts as part of my family's decision (local siblings and mom) to provide Christmas presents to a needy family. My wife and I separately selected a needy senior to provide gifts for ourselves. All the senior asked for was nicer bedding and some bath towels.

I feel good about all this.

I got a great Christmas gift late last week....a card from my mom that when you read between the lines, it basically says fuck off.

:|

I got one gift this year Lance, from my sister.

Brother can once again travel across the country, rent cars etc....but he can't get jack shit for me.

I in turn, searched for and curated some really good old pictures of my parents together and got them put onto Christmas tree ornaments. A different picture for each one.

So far I've made my sister, my niece and my nephew cry

I can hardly wait until my brother and his wife open theirs (she has a heart, he is left wanting..)

Sorry about your Mom man. At least she sent a card?

You know, I never support rioting at all, but those yellow vests in France seem to have won their battle for no taxes on year-end bonus and overtime pay  I wouldn't hate that at all... I swear the tax rate on OT and bonus is higher but I've never looked into it.

It would have been better and I would have had less taxes taken out if they would have broken it up into 2 or 3 separate checks, but because they rolled it all into one, the amount of the check pushed it into the highest withholding bracket, so they took 35% out in taxes from this paycheck. :|

I hope you found some joy in that my friend.

Saw you replied to a post in another thread, got an email on my phone and was quite literally giddy about it but couldn't get back to my computer to reply until now. Really missed you. Wishing you a very happy Christmas, in whatever form that may look like this year. Kisses.

Geez it was a heart ripper yesterday. My Mom's facility was a ghost town, the parking lot was empty. Skeleton crew and not one family member visiting their loved ones.

I felt so bad, I had some fudge my sister makes every year (for like 10 people) and shared it around with some of the patients and staff.

It was a rough day GF. If I ever start showing symptoms of that disease I hope someone takes me out.

Yeah, I hate when they do that. Oh well, even a straight bonus check (not that I get them anymore) is taxed as a "gift" so, 33.33%

Sorry to hear mean, that's so tough. Good for you for spending time there, it's not easy to do.

I get the sentiment about nursing homes being especially depressing this time of year, my grandmother's in the same place right now with dementia. She says the most outrageous shit these days but at least she has a sense of humor about it. Every visit is a challenge though.

My Mom is one of the better patients at her place. The others are like some of the people from that movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest I hate to say...

Still, she walked in there and is in a wheelchair permanently now. It's the little things that crush my soul. My Mom was a very neat, organized person. Now she'll dump her drink into her food or try to eat things she shouldn't.

I shouldn't be relating this. I guess if there's one positive, it's that my Mom used to be a very introverted, private person who didn't do much socializing. Now because of the dementia she's very open with strangers and has lost any and all of her old OCD tendencies about living. It's like they say, people do revert back into becoming children.

My Mom has it as well, She is still pretty coherent, just really forgetful, some childlike tendencies, major change in diet and a pretty rapid decline in health, She still shuffles around though and knows who we all are. She did open her Xmas stocking 4 times yesterday though.

Hang onto these times. My Mom was like that too for a few years. The worst she would do is repeatedly ask the same things and become a little confused about how long she lived here. I used to think - Alzheimer's isn't such a bad disease, you just have to remind the person what their name is, where they are and what year it is.

Of course it gets a lot worse than that over time.

Every case is different and the sad part about my Mom is that she forgot about my Dad first. To the point she became afraid of him and she stopped going to bed at night. I became the buffer. Every night she would approach me slowly, ask when we were going home and could I ask 'that guy' upstairs on the couch to go home to his own place.

She had been married to my Dad for 62 years at that point, living in this house for over 50 years together.

I think I saw what true love really was when my Dad would visit her every day at the home we put her in, buy her things and do all of the necessary stuff you have to when a loved one suffers from dementia, and no matter how badly my Mom treated him he was always there for her.

The day my Dad got his confirmed cancer diagnosis I was there at the hospital with my sister and brother. Specialist said we have all of the CT scans, your cancer is stage four and we can't cure this.

My Dad started crying (which never happens) and we immediately said - Oh dad, we'll fight this with you! We'll never leave you alone! Sometimes the doctors are wrong!

He said - I'm not crying because of the diagnosis, I'm happy your mother won't understand any of this or have to go through it with me.

They don't come with the wall hardware, but have a built in slide mount too narrow for a small round-head anchor screw. What the hell? So I have to cut back the wood to make room. But that makes it slightly loose. That would be find for a general use shelf, but not for something that a cat may launch onto or off of. It has to be tight. Really my fault for not getting something directly attached into the wall. I still might. So I devised a little safety harness for it.

I live close to a school and a little park. Always kids parked in cars either getting titty or getting high.

One night my father walked over to the school parking lot to talk to some young druggies.

Dad says the driver rolled down the window, screamed AAAAARHHHH!! at my Dad as loud as he could and shook his head wildly around while the other guys laughed.

Dad comes back, tells me what happened and I politely advised that maybe he shouldn't confront strangers that way because it could get dangerous. He says - They had one of those large glass pipes with water, looked uncomfortable sitting in a car like that

So I get a little upset and walk over, knock on the car's window. Young guy doesn't say nothing but for some reason they're all trying to hide things in the car.

I say - My Dad's an ex-cop (he's not), knows you're smoking a bong and has called his old precinct. They'll probably get here in about five minutes. You may want to leave.

Young dude thanks me and they peel out real quick

That's not accurate but I will tell you what happened here.

A grand total of two shops opened (after talking about 29 potential locations) and there were four hour line ups at each place.

People reported there were some effective strains sold, but way overpriced. For example I would normally pay 100 dollars for 14 grams of really good weed on the black market. These stores were selling the same amount for 200, 300, 379 dollars.

As you heard the retail stores sold out instantly, which then affected some of the medical marijuana dispensaries that have been in legal operation for years.

I went online and most of the medical places turned into online suppliers for the public at large. Their prices were TOTALLY cheaper than the retail stores on my city. Same half ounce as above can cost as little as 50 or 60 dollars at some online places. A person can make 14 grams or a half ounce, last 14 days or more being frugal.

So for you, it's like a liquor store (or I guess convenience stores in your case) selling a six pack for 10 dollars and then some online place selling the same six pack for two dollars...and they deliver!

We have pot shops all over the city. They seem to pop up weekly on every corner now. :| The earliest ones got in on the medical business, where you needed a script from a doc and had to be at least 18. The recreational became legal and some rec only shops started opening up. I think most of them do both though (med and rec). Anyone can buy rec weed here, you have to be 21 is the only stipulation. They don't deliver yet, but the state legislature is looking into it. It's all uncharted territory because technically weed is still illegal according to the federal government.

You know my view as I've had plenty of experience with both. It's no different than liquor stores on every corner. Our booze stores attract bums looking for handouts like moths to a flame). When I ordered online, they did ask for government issued ID proof of age. I flat out asked if I could be in legal jeopardy during any part of the process. In writing they assured me no.

I think I would rather get it delivered because if I go to a retail store, there's a chance I could get pulled over by the cops. The drugs are legal, but am I driving under the influence would be the next question/hassle.

It's an expensive habit and I do support all forms of competition. If my online place can pick/pack/ship to my doorstep for let's say 120 dollars per ounce, how much of a mark up are those retail stores getting selling the same thing for over 400 dollars? That's the real criminal part.

And the online places have so much more variety compared to the old black market I used. Old days were that you handed your cash to a guy, he gave you whatever strain he had at the time. There was no choice.

And I must admit...now, I'm like a kid in a candy store :yumyum: I can't even window-shop at those sites anymore

My brother and his wife are here. Don't get along with brother, usually the wife and I have no problems.

She starts doing massive amounts of laundry last night. She has some strange habits in terms of drying things, taking some things out, drying more things, hanging some things and standing by the dryer constantly opening and closing the door. (like 10 times in 30 minutes) Fine, we all have our idiosyncrasies.

Then she brings wet clothes upstairs and starts hanging things on some nice wooden railings we have separating rooms and puts more wet clothes on the backs of our dining room chairs. I politely asked what she was doing, I made a joke about how when I do laundry I tend to do it in the laundry room in the basement  and please don't hang wet clothes on wooden fixtures.

She got mad and started to say- Apparently this scares you...I freaked out, interrupted her and said - We have a wooden clothes rack RIGHT BESIDE the dryer that you've used before. It works wonders for this purpose, allow me to get it for you!!!!

It got nasty when she said to me - So tell me ____, what is "real" sexism because I really need to know? LOL! This entire comment section is like a sexist convention and ____is leading the cause. I used to respect____, but now all of this horribleness reminds me of struggles I have gone through in my life and I'm sick of it!

*(the debate is whether a TV reality star was edited in a sexist manner compared to men...not world ending by any means)*

So I give her my best dictionary definition about sexist marginalization, varying levels of the offense and get a handful of likes from other women.

Then I say - When you sarcastically belittle a male poster like you are attempting to do to me, you are automatically precluding him from the discussion. Ironically that's a form of sexism because as you know, women are the typical victims, but not the only victims. If anything is to change we all need to be involved in the conversation. Don't you think?

I was at the 7-11 4 blocks from the apartment, when the police cars starting flying up the road. When I saw 3 different jurisdictions, I said "that's not good... probably that fucking mall again"

Yup. 12 jurisdictions responded to the law enforcement emergency alarm. Large flash mobs of "unattended juveniles" descended on the mall to cause disruptions and fight. They closed the mall, police moved everyone out and posted at all entrances. The mobs moved further east. 7 additional businesses closed with many more posting guards to restrict access.

I don't live in a big city. I am near a big city, yes, but I am in the suburbs. But that mall and the Walmart do draw from one of the worst neighborhoods in the city, so yes, the city creeps out to near me sometimes.

I used to be fearless and then got old. One night years ago I was sitting in my car getting high and the car was turned off. I saw a group of kids walking up the block about 100 yards away. One had a bat and was taking swings at cars, hitting mirrors, windshields and headlights.

There was a time I would have got out of my car and challenged them. That night I turned on my car (which startled them and the bat was hidden) and I drove home and called the cops. I gave them the street name and direction the kids were walking.

I knew I had crossed a boundary in my life that night

I've been through a few things, told some of the stories here. Yeah I tend to see red when people are in trouble and think about the risk/reward after it's over.

Already relayed this. One night in the park behind my house a guy was smacking a girl hard enough for me to hear it. I went out and challenged him, he was drunk, I smacked him around pretty good and he didn't touch me (it was like punching out a blind man). Gave the chick a ride home and cleaned her up a bit. She didn't want to go to the hospital and then started crying on the way home. Said she was mad at herself for staying with that asshole.

I felt pretty good after, other than my scraped up knuckles

We decided to spread some charity this Christmas. Included with 5 gifts and with another 5 for a Christmas Eve trivia game with family, we are giving 10 $20 charity gift cards. The recipients use the gift cards to choose a charity for the donation. The site has over 300 available charities and passes through 100% of the gift card value. They simply ask you to make an additional donation to them when you make your purchase.

https://www.tisbest.org/

Follow-up. Everyone thought it was a very cool idea (at least to our faces) and all the cards have been redeemed. We gave 5 as gifts and used another 5 as prizes at my family's Christmas. I wrote out trivia questions in 5 categories. It was fun.

The site sends you an email telling you when each one is redeemed, what charity they selected, and any thank-you note they entered. The site also has management reporting to view redemption dates and charity selections. Very slick, very easy to use on both ends. We certainly recommend it if you want to do something similar.

In all the 10 charity gift cards resulting in funds for 13 different charities (they can select up to 3 per voucher).

If you read the explanation, the blocking services are from Google... Android is Google... That's the company that built the software. Although in my case, it is also the company that built the hardware since I have a Pixel. Which leads me consider that it might be a Pixel thing. No idea.

Gotcha.

I have an Android phone and my provider Rogers put 5.1 lollypop or whatever on it. I went into the dialer/settings/call settings/ and was supposed to be able to blacklist numbers there.

Instead I found it at dialer/harassment filter/settings/ and could create blacklists and whitelists from there. I already had a number in there that was blocked.

I also found a call barring category but that was general, like for international calls.

I know the basic premise. The OS version is the same for each maker, Samsung, LG, Huawei, etc and then they tweak the base OS with their special features.

If I swipe down with one finger, it pulls the black notifications/shortcuts drawer (?) down. Not sure of the correct name. If I do a similar motion, it keeps bringing up a search function that appears with a search box and a little keyboard. It says 'search apps, contacts, messages'. I'm looking at it now but can't tell you the exact motion because it's so close to the one finger swipe down that brings up the notifications tray.

Doesn't matter. If you can't find the category through your phone dialer/settings it may not be there. It's weird because I don't think Huawei created the harassment filter app, and that it's part of the 5.1 OS in general.

Hal-9000

Oh no, no, no... I can block callers. I have that. What I don't have is the app RBP was talking about. The "ignore suspected spam callers" app. It's an autofilter maintained by Verizon themselves. You just switch the app on and the spammers don't get through without any action from you. That's what I don't have. My lamentation has nothing to do with an inability to block spam calls, it's the fact that it's so prevalent now that providers don't just keep a list of reported spammers and block them for us so we don't have to be bothered by them. But the providers do do that. It's native on many android phones nowadays and has been for a few years now. But I don't have it on my phone. It's a feature included by default on newer phones with newer versions of android apparently. Verizon does have an app that can do that on my phone, but I have to pay for it on a monthly basis. And that's why they're dicks.

 That changes things. No worries man. In that arena I did come across a setting from the dialer call settings titled - Block calls that ring once. I suspect that has something to do with potential scam calls.

I have a whole story about the latest telemarketer calls I've been getting on my land line, but they're not important to this. One that leaves a scratching noise as a message, one that if you pick up they will keep calling back every 20 minutes or so...some from Jamaica, Virginia, California area codes.

Kind of a unique thing I was reading about. Some of the scammers will mask their call using the same three number prefix of your line. Not the area code, the three numbers right after. They somehow get old numbers (typically from people that have died) and mask their location because the caller ID looks like someone down the street is calling you.

I hate those things :x

They also set up real Tipis nearby and have Native Indians* show off the actual and ceremonial dress of the time as well as how they lived and cooked etc.

*I'm in shit already. We're supposed to use the term 'First Nations' when referring to Native Indians now.

Now, they will be cancelling the Indian Village name because it's deemed too offensive and may not have the display at all in future years.

I got a scratch card at the same time saying I had automatically won a set of iPhone wireless headphones (i-phones?) that are worth 200 bucks up here.

Get to the dealership on the first day of the promo, they say 'they've run out of the earphones' and I just have to fill out a form and they will notify me when the earphones come in. It's the first day of the promo at 10am and they ran out already? I make a funny comment about the old bait and switch and how that used to be illegal. Get met by uncomfy silence after that one...

No it was very polite and low key. An older female East Indian sales rep (first time I've seen that) came running down to the floor saying she was excited to see me try the key, so I imagine whatever rep is present when the vehicle is won gets a perk of some sort.

I still have the scratch card saying I won the headphones.

No it was very polite and low key. An older female East Indian sales rep (first time I've seen that) came running down to the floor saying she was excited to see me try the key, so I imagine whatever rep is present when the vehicle is won gets a perk of some sort.

I still have the scratch card saying I won the headphones.

I don't have an iPhone or any use for wireless earbuds anyway  I can see dropping and/or losing those babies more than once.

We get those things in the mail from time-to-time (the keys). I'm wondering if it's even legit at all. Is there actually a key that's mailed out that starts the car? Or is it just to get people to come down to the dealership?

I wondered the same thing. You don't step up to an actual vehicle, there's a key slot mock up on a piece of plexiglass.
My key didn't even enter the thing, like not a 1/8th of an inch

We have the Tim Horton's contest Roll Up The Rim. Peel up the rim of your coffee cup and win everything from a free donut to a free car. Someone complained about the same type of thing and apparently Tim Hortons proved that winning cups were printed and placed into public circulation. An auditor works in tandem with the company that prints the cups to ensure the four cups that say Toyota RAV 4 or whatever are sent out into the wild. They can't print the winning cups and have them sit in a warehouse as the contest only runs for a few weeks at a time.

They rely on people throwing cups away and get this...they know it's a pain in the ass to unroll those rims

Yup, it's like when Safeway down here runs their Monopoly game. You collect tickets based on how much you spend at the store each visit. And there's always one 'rare' ticket to complete each prize. Now for the lowest $5 prize, even the rarest card has probably 10's of thousands printed (versus the millions of the common tix). But for the top million dollar prize, the rare piece has only 2 or 3 printed for the entire country (i forget off the top of my head how many grand prizes there were. And Safeway is hoping for the same thing, that the people that happen to get those rare tickets for the million dollar prize just pitch them.

I helped my Dad with a similar Coop Canadian travel game. We got everything we needed except of the course the single Holy Grail card needed to complete the playing surface. I'm sure Mr Coop had that one secure in his back pocket.

With the Tim Hortons cups they print literally millions of cups during that promo. I've had years where I consistently won donuts and coffees almost daily and then times when I didn't win a thing throughout the two months or however long it lasts.

I know a little about printing and distribution. There's absolutely no way to end that contest legally  If they choose a specific date, there will still be cups sitting somewhere unused. If they choose to end it when the cups from that print run/season get exhausted, the contest could theoretically go on for years.

I was getting into making romaine lettuce salads the past couple of months for health reasons.... then the food poisoning scare hit.

THANKS USA FOR THE SOILED LETTUCE :x

ahem..so I switched over to green leaf lettuce and had that for my New Years dinner with chicken strips

Due to economics I've been eating primarily chicken only for the past year or so. No red meat at all.

When my bro was here we decided on Wendy's take out for a treat. I had a double cheese and was almost drooling over the greasy smell and taste

Haven't sworn off red meat, just don't buy roasts and steaks anymore.

I get some pretty weird cravings at times and will drool over the odd TV commercial (and food porn post)...so that shit is hardwired into our lizard brains for sure

There was a chick trying to promote vegan food on the local news. She made a 'roast' and everything she did including using a lot of some special liquid to make the gravy taste like meat gravy, was to make it seem like roast beef. I sat back and thought - Hmmph. She just took about 15 expensive and pain in the ass steps to make that lump of whatever look and taste like meat.

Maybe just buy meat next time and use stuff to disguise it as something vegan?

(don't wanna know the truth)Sometimes you can get creative. If chicken breast isn't on sale here, it's about $3.49 a pound. But I can get a Chuck roast for $2.99 at Aldi and cut that into steaks for breakfast. I know that's some ghetto economics, and no comparison to Lance's prime rib, but Lowery's beef marinade does wonders, and sometimes poor people have good ideas.

Like when she's "negotiating" with the cat to vacate the closet and I move past her, grab the cat by the scruff and move him out. It's a legit cat training to exert dominance.

Was the meat actually graded "prime"? Or was it just a rib roast?

So let me get this straight. Even Anonymous can't find anything on Ocasio-Cortez other than a video of her dancing in a Boston College promo?

C'mon, man. That's some deep-state level scrubbing.

Full video if you're curious... she has a nice rack anyway.

I reinstalled Windows 7 from scratch on Dec 7th/2018. (no I can't buy Windows 10 so shut up about that).

Saw a phrase you never want to see during a long Windows install. Briefly - Installed OS from disk, then 10 files, then another 10 files, then another 19 files...then and I shit you not - 189 files. So I look at the clock and it's 1 pm by the time it wants the 189 updates.

To download and install 189 updates it took from 1 pm until 5:30 pm. Then it did the reboot sequence saying configuring updates 33%, 69% etc and rebooted twice.

And then this six word message you never want to see - "Windows couldn't configure updates, reverting back".

It stayed on that screen for over another hour.

:| I said screw it, unplugged my modem and started the entire process again. I stayed up 26 hours, until the next morning installing Windows twice. Second time around all updates went in without issue.

I didn't pay attention to the viral response - no idea what the discussion is out there. We had a whole discussion here about the oddity of a 29 year old apparently having ZERO social media presence prior to her congressional bid. No pictures, no videos, no old stupid tweets, nothing. My theory is that she was manufactured and seriously scrubbed, in contrast to the "organic" "grassroots" "person of the people" political rise story we've been spoon fed.

No axe to grind, just really bizarre.
