Here's the difference.

Conspiracy to commit murder is a legit crime. So while I don't like stings, hard to argue that one, although they would still have to prove intent and preparation, otherwise it's a fantasy thought crime. If they guy say has the murder weapon, and the tools to dismember, and a place to commit the crime arranged, that's legit. If not, then it's a tough call.

In the case of sexual solicitation of a minor, it's only a crime if you solicit a minor. The same solicitation for an adult isn't a crime. My objection to those entrapments stems from the fact that no minor was solicited. States have changed laws for the purpose of increasing the conviction rate by adding "a minor or someone the person reasonably believed to be a minor" - that's bullshit.

I'll try to follow it and see if he's found guilty. I think though with this level of FBI involvement, they're going to crucify him. Also not sure if he had tools, place etc.

Related creepy story about a European guy who was on a fantasy cannibal website and police used him to sting other members. They arrested a guy which led to the discovery of dismembered people, cooking pots etc, as the guy had sent pictures of various body parts being cooked.

In his case they eventually got evidence because the pictures were real and it panned out to finding actual dead people. They did use the guy as a honeytrap in terms of starting communications that were mostly based in fantasy. Honeytrap guy was initially going to kill himself/offer himself as food before helping authorities. He said one day he saw some pictures (which turned out to be real) and said something woke up inside telling him that it was wrong, to get help, and help police.

What iteration of boards had a "Serious Discussion" section? The intent, if I remember correctly, was to have a place for legitimate discussion and debate, free from jokes, tangents, and personal attacks.

I would like that considered for reboot. I have had several topics I'd like to explore with ya'll but don't bother because it will go off the rails tangentially within 4 posts.

Teh One Who Knocks

AS had a Serious Discussion section. Personally, I would not want to start another section to the forum as we have A LOT right now, some of which I'm already considering for deletion and/or consolidation. But, if you want to post a thread in any section, just at the end of the thread title add the [SD] designation to note that is for serious discussion only. Any post that goes off topic will be removed by one of the staff. And if we happen to miss it going off the rails, just let one of us know.

Sound good?

Actually now that I think about it, put the [SD] at the beginning of the thread title, that way it can be plainly seen from the front page of the forum if it's the top thread and it will be easier to see if it's at the beginning of the title on a full page of threads.

I fucking hate Stuart Little. I know what you’re thinking, this is some kind of funny joke, but no. Stuart Little is a piece of shit. A damn rat got picked over actual children at an orphanage and he’s supposed to be a hero? And I can’t even tell you how many damn times I’ve seen a great parking space only to turn the corner and realise Stuart Little is already parked there in his stupid little fucking convertible. He took my wife and the kids and my house and my job. I swear to fucking god, I’m going to kill myself and take that goddamn rodent to hell with me. Stuart Little has ruined my family. Last summer, I approached the miserable mouse in the street, and asked him for his autograph, because my son is a huge fan. The fucking rat gave me the autograph and told me to burn in hell. Later, when I gave my son the autograph he started crying and said he hated me. Turns out the mousefucker didnt write his autograph, no, he wrote “you’re a piece of shit, and i fucked your mom”. I’m now divorced, and planning a huge class-action lawsuit against the white devil that ruined my life. Your time is almost over, Stuart. All the people you’ve wronged will rise against you.

I splurged and got some vegetables and a cut of roast Sasquatch beef. Cut it all up this morning and threw it into the crockpot with my special seasonings and little bit of TLC.

For me, crockpot meals are a big deal

The whole house smells soooo good and really brings back memories of my Dad because this was his go-to meal when cooking. He was like me, not a very imaginative cook.

Seared the Sasquatch with flour, four large potatoes, four large carrots, four stalks of celery, mushrooms, beef broth, one large whole onion, 10 cloves of garlic  and some seasoning.

:yumyum: I fear it will be good.

Yeah they caught him but wouldn't disclose what the target(s) were to be and what type of devices they got him with. Only that they exploded one of the devices.

News site has the dumb adblock thing happening and is Canadian :x so here are some excerpts:

“It was a substantiated and credible attack plot” but no target, date, or location was part of the plot, officials said.

“What I can say is the attack plan, the individual identified and expressed capacity and capability and intent, but to specific ideologies, I can’t comment on that,” he said.

"We've recently learned of several examples of dangerous individuals entering the country due in part to lax screening procedures," Scheer said.

RCMP thanked the FBI as well as other Canadian organizations for their help in the investigation.

“In particular, the RCMP would like to thank the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Kingston Police, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC) for their cooperation and collaboration,” a release from the Mounties read.

Some people living in Kingston (where the terrorist was arrested) noticed the smaller plane on the bottom flying overhead for about a week before this incident and started taking pictures of it. FINTRAC (the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada) was involved with the arrest. That would indicate some money was moving and associated with identifying the incident.

I was thinking today about the number of times I have heard people, from addictions counselors, to 12-step devotees, to recovering addicts, to physicians, to mental health providers, say the same stupid line about drinking. "Alcohol is a depressant. I have no idea why a depressed person would drink a depressant". That's because you're dumb or lazy or both. Alcohol is an anxiolytic that works on the same pathway as benzos and other anxiolytic prescriptions. Yes it is a central nervous system depressant, and no it is not a good remedy to anything.

I sang with a garage band for a summer after going to a karaoke bar one night. Guitarist said I mostly sang in A and he showed me a few things on guitar as he was an excellent player.

The only good thing that came from my singing career was my appreciation for what REAL singers do  I completely lost my voice the second night screaming into a mic and I never quite got the breathing/timing down.

So yesterday I found out the home insurance went up over 300 dollars this year. After going up 170 dollars last year compared to the year before. Made a call, sent some notes and have them working on more discounts because we haven't made a claim in years.

Today, the guy (chartered accountant) who did my Mom's taxes calls and says we are going to be reassessed, because THEY made a data input error which caused my Mom to get an additional 1300 bucks on her return and now we have to pay that back. I think I pissed him off because I said - Let me get this straight. We paid you a fee to do the taxes, you made a large error and now we have to pay back revenue Canada? He gets all pissy and says - Well if there's any interest incurred, we can cover that.

I said - Here's my sister's phone number. You had better speak to her about this. I hate passing the buck so to speak but my sister has a mind like a steel trap for numbers and accounting, and she probably won't tell the guy to go fuck his hat.

Reminds me of a fiasco my former neighbor went through.... They moved in next to me after his wife could no longer do stairs in their life long home. He called his insurance guy to square away any changes that needed to be done on his old house now on the market. Since the house was not occupied his rate tripled! months later the house was broken into and all the copper pipe stolen.

He calls his insurance, they deny the claim because the house is not occupied. He says wait a minute, I'm paying triple my old rate to make sure the house IS covered. They said: Our agent made an error. Your policy doesn't cover it, sorry.

He calls his insurance, they deny the claim because the house is not occupied. He says wait a minute, I'm paying triple my old rate to make sure the house IS covered. They said: Our agent made an error. Your policy doesn't cover it, sorry.

For our home insurance, the young guy tells me that everyone pays into a pool and because claims are made in Canada all of the rates go up.

It's Insurance 101 and I'm familiar with the premise.

So I say to him - You're telling me that I'm getting penalized because other people have made claims? And we haven't? Our premium has been increased by 170 one year, then by 300 the next so by my calculations that's almost a 500 dollar increase within three years without ever having made a claim.

I think it's time to find a new provider and I probably won't be renewing this policy by April 1st. He says - Sorry to hear, but please inform us if you don't plan to continue renewing as you don't want to be on the hook for a lapsed policy.

I respond - Wait a minute. Your hard copy I have in my hand says it's my option to renew by April 1st via check. Now you're saying a further action may be taken if I don't inform you I've decided to go to another provider? Sounds like a threat.

 He apologizes, says he'll talk to his manager and arrange for some block watch discount and other things, and will get back to me today.

Lol. As said, the wiring will be tomorrow. No joy on guitar. Bent my finger to try a chord, and cut opened up. So, since I dont have a slide, gonna try some power chords with first and ring finger. Lol.
No repair needed on the saw. I have to add a circuit to my garage shop, as all existing circuits are single phase 120. That's normal here. The saw motor is 208 , and cant be rewired for 120, so I'll just run a new circuit. Since my garage is a metal building, with no interior walls, itll be easy, probably less that 1/2 hour of work.

I don't think any of it is illegal, and I don't think I can sue them for being dicks. The last call I got I said I'd be glad to start paying the balance down once my billing inquiry was resolved... from last September. The CSR said she would resubmit it. Instead, they are just ignoring me and sent an old balance to collections.

My current desktop was bought in 2010. 8 gigs ram, GTX 460 vid card and an I5-2500k processor. I recall some people here making fun of me because I took four weeks picking out the parts and purchasing it. That's why I didn't just pull the trigger on any store-built POS or laptop. Just so I could make this post today :D

Read an interesting article on ram, processor and component interactions and why no regular home users need more than I've listed above. Think you need 16 or 32 gigs of ram? Your PC will never get close to maximizing 16 gigs of ram unless you work with large video files compressing them, multiple Photoshop projects, AutoCAD software, or play cutting edge games with an open Twitch stream where people are viewing and interacting with you as you play.

In fact most new games won't touch 16 gigs of ram, because games prefer to go to Vram on the videocard first, then go to the physical ram (in some cases). Windows still prefers creating it's own swapfile rather than max out the physical ram when gaming.

A ram test user opened 100 browser tabs, all different sites, his media player, Youtube video and started playing Grand Theft Auto Five which is now an older but still a CPU and Vram intensive game. He touched 10 gigs ram usage at times and said 3.6 of that was coming from the Windows OS itself, attempting to do background tasks while all of that other crap was going on.

If you're surfing the net and gaming at levels similar to mine (games circa 2010-2016), 8 gigs of ram will never slow you down. Of course the norm is now 16 but as that guy demonstrated, even demanding users rarely if ever use that much memory. There's more about how motherboard buses and processors bottleneck before that much ram can be used, but it's fairly technical.

Of course YOUR mileage may vary depending on what you do at home.

I absolutely did, it peaked my interest, I've been interested in anti-aging science since watching a Ted Talk about it probably 10 years ago!

I felt a tad overwhelmed and wanting to fact check stuff because I'm a skeptic, There were so many interesting ideas, drugs, lifestyles mentioned I want to research and try all of them. I have tried intermittent fasting and my wife's a skeptic but he speaks highly of the science in mice. I don't know anything about NMN, Risveritrol or Metforming but am very curious about it now. Cryotherapy is interesting too and he mentioned yeast lives 30% longer but again that's a big leap to humans so I'd want to know more.

Cracked me up when Joe said "I feel like I should make a shopping list" because I kind of felt the same way.

What's your involvement with him? Are you involved in that area of research too right now?

Yeah, it's ridiculous to upgrade home systems, whether it be a desktop or a laptop, when you really don't need to. Especially now that SSD's have come way down in price compared to when I put mine in. I still use a 2 TB HDD for storage of media and whatnot, but the SSD runs all the software on the PC. Plus I maxed out the RAM from 4 to 16 gigs at the same time. My PC at home runs better than most of the newer ones we have here at the shop. All for around $100 to $150 depending on the SSD you get VS like you said, $1000 for a loaded new laptop.

Speaking of which, my laptop at home is equally as old and it was a dog when I bought it, low on specs but didn't need it for much. Eventually Windows was really slowing it down, so I just decided to turn it into a Linux laptop (running Linux Mint) and it works fine for what I use it for.

I have 24 gigs of RAM and my resource usage usually hovers around 11 gigs. Never goes above 12. But I never lag either.

I've been thinking about building a new one because ASUS ended support for my motherboard a while ago, and the newer boards have a ton of cool features that I'll probably never use, but at least I'll be able to say, "Hey! My board can do this...".

Mine's an i7 920.

I was the 4 month guy. Hal kept making fun of me because of it.

But honestly, I have absolutely no issues with performance.

Untrue! I was a sister in solidarity of support when the other guys LANCE were making fun of you.

Your resource use hovers around 11 gigs? May I ask what you're doing daily, Skynet?

No, I'm pretty sure you both made fun of me. Or at least asked what the hell I was waiting for on a daily basis. It was 10 years ago anyway, so I suppose it doesn't matter.

Truthfully, the more RAM you have, the more 64 bit Windows 10 allocates to tasks. It used to be that 32 bit Windows OSes couldn't assign byte addresses above a certain amount to processes, but 64 bit Windows 10 can, or at least the limit is way higher, and most programs are coded to run on multithreads now so they'll eat up more memory... virtual, swap/pagefile space, and physical RAM... than they used to. If you keep programs open for a while, it'll eat up more memory than usual and I keep stuff open for days on end. I usually reboot my computer once a week, unless updates need to be installed, but for the most part, my computer's always on and running something. That's just the way I roll.

It's better to have it than to not have it. Any time I have the option to max a particular resource, I'm gonna do it. I'm not gonna suffer for it.

So your ram use is not because of one big program like video encoding or crunching huge datasets of numbers, it's just because you leave it on doing things?

I learned a lot from that article and remember it because the guy always opened 100 tabs for his ram tests. I may open four or five if I'm busy  The guy did say your OS will try to chew through ram and be a big user, along with certain apps you may not realize that use a lot of ram in the background.

Playing newer games will hit the processor and physical ram more than in the past, because of how the code is written. The killer there is people who open a live Twitch stream while playing, which involves a camera and multiple connections from watchers who are texting with the host. In that case it's the Twitch stream eating up all of the ram.

Believe it or not crunching huge datasets of numbers won't take up a huge amount of memory, if you know how to code the program right. But for the most part, I just leave the computer on. Sometimes I'm running code on something, sometimes I'm downloading junk, and sometimes it's just on with 3 or 4 browser windows open. Sometimes it's not doing anything at all, I just don't want to shut it off.

Windows does have a few processes that are massive memory hogs. I'm constantly killing processes that shouldn't be running at all. Linux is better in that way.

I'm not much for gaming on the PC, even though I have the hardware to handle it... or at least I used to. I did put this system together 10 years ago. I could probably use a better video card than the one I've got in there now. I just don't feel like buying a new one.

I think if I put a new system together, it would be a music recording and editing machine. There's a ton of hardware/software out now that you don't even need amplifiers for, you could just plug your guitar into the hardware and you can dial up the simulated sound you're looking for in the software. You don't even need a mixing board anymore, everything's done digitally.

I still can't get over you using around 11 gigs of ram on the daily. And yes, I may have been one of the teasers when you bought your PC, but only because I found someone who took longer than me to buy a new one.

I was thinking along similar lines for my next PC since I only game about once per week and only for an hour at a time. You know that gamers typically have to boost every component after the vidcard..better mobo, more ram, better PSU..and it goes on and on.

Now I read and listen to podcasts mostly on my PC, so I can...probably cut out a discrete vidcard. Wow, I had troubles typing that

Hey I just happened to keep a build I was playing around with in Oct last year.

Please note it was a budget build so 8 gigs ram, 500 gig SSD, cheaper midrange vidcard with 2 gigs Vram.

The only elite item would be the Seasonic power supply as they have a good reputation for reliability.

Also note it's only an i3-8100 processor, but one that works extremely well in tandem with the GTX 1O50 vidcard

Are you involved in that area of research too right now?

he barely mentions it, but he talked about how iron supplementation in the elderly could be a bad thing because it might cause senescent or 'zombie' cells, which is what i work on

Read the book The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule. She worked with Bundy at a suicide crisis center and was friends with him. They exchanged letters and phone calls for years until his execution. She's done a ton of true crime novels and is an ex-cop. Not the best author yet still a great story about knowing someone personally and thinking the accusations against him have to be wrong. Rule had doubts about his guilt until the evidence became too overwhelming.

But hells bells I had to go to a bulb website that had bulb silhouettes and try to match their cool 1979 track lighting bulbs to the current LED counterpart. I felt like I was picking a suspect out of a line up.

:-k don't mean to confuse but 40 watts isn't much for an entryway light.

I use 60 watts in small lamps and 100 watts in larger living room lamps etc.

I would think you need the equivalent of 100 watts overhead, no?

Yeah, 208/220 vac. Most stuff stateside is 110 volts. Just some appliances and larger power tools are 220. It cuts current load in half, but then in your area Lost, everything is 220 yes?

Still living in the 1960's?

What voltage do you lot use over there? Most of our standard household current is 110v, 220v is only for high draw stuff like furnace,A/C electric stove, etc. A plug in electric kettle would probably be 110v.

It's all 240V here in Aus. I can't think of any advantage for 110V to be honest other than teaching patience :-k

Jesus.. why?

Because the escrow account is going to be short. Property taxes are going up this year as well as my homeowner's insurance. And instead of paying attention to this, they just caught it, so now we get to reap the benefit of their 'oversight'.

Well, they were nice enough to offer us the option of cutting them a check for $2300 and change to keep our mortgage payment where it is. Their kindness is just amazing.

Theoretically because (a large part of) the weed tax money was supposed to go to the schools, and that's where around 60% of my property taxes go, to the school district. But the joke's on us, the cities/state are using the weed money elsewhere AND our property taxes get to go up! :cheerlead:

That sucks, but at least you're in a low property tax state. Illinois is 4X that high.

I have a moral dilemma. It's the retards at the local grocery. I mean literal retards. I appreciate that they are giving employment opportunities to the developmentally disabled, but I feel like they have crossed a line to too many retards. The guy yelling about closed late night entrances, or bitching about how he works harder than anyone in his loud retard voice. Customers being forced to politely engage for fear of being rude to retards. The medium functioning cashier that is retard-oblivious-happy and wants to chat while scanning my depressing frozen pizza. Maybe I am the retard. Maybe I should aspire to be that oblivious. Maybe the sub-par wages they pay for those workers isn't exploitation after all.

I just don't know, but I am overwhelmed by the retards every time. Do I ignore it? Am I part of the problem if I don't shop there? Do I have any obligation to be retard-polite?

I don't know, man. I just don't know.

I quit going to my regular grocery because the ONE non DIY lane they had open was always run by the slowest moving guy I've ever encountered in a store. Pretty sure he's developmentally disabled but damn. I'm talking a sloth with 3 weeks training could do a better job. Please, move him to stocking shelves or something.

There's a couple of supermarkets here that do it. They don't hire a lot, but there's always at least one or two of them there. Usually they are bagging groceries or wrangling carts from the parking lot, but they are also very chatty and very loud. I use the self-checkout lanes for a reason, I hate people. I don't like having to interact with anyone unless I have to, but these developmentally disabled seem to make it a point to go out of their way to be chatty. I feel the same as you, am I being extra rude to them because I want to just ignore/avoid them? It's easier when it's just an average person to ignore them, but even when you are acting busy or annoyed, the retarded employees don't pick up on the hint and won't leave you alone. And then if you are seen ignoring them, then I'm sure there are people talking behind your back about how evil you are as a person for not wanting to engage with them. No, I just want to get my groceries, pay for them, and go the fuck home in peace.

I finished the Ted Bundy tapes thing on Netlfix. I'm going to revamp my initial take to RBP and say it was informative, lots of footage of Bundy and they did a good job with the timeline

There was one really uncomfortable part in episode two where Bundy was in a room with two people. The female was asking questions and Bundy would always smile, delay, look down and then give a qualifier like - Well Jane, your interpretation of ____ may not be the same as mine.

Then she asked - Did you physically harm anyone Ted? Bundy replies with a smile - Well Jane, your idea of physical harm may not be the same as mine.

The room goes dead silent and both interviewers don't know what to say. The tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife
