I heard today that the average American watches 4 hours of TV a day. Really?

I leave my TV on for noise (I don't know why, but I have a hard time concentrating when I don't have something to tune out) but I hardly watch jack shit anymore. If I catch a ballgame or a hockey game on TV and I feel like watching it, I will. I sit in front of one of my computers for the majority of the time, which probably isn't that much better. I do read books some, but not like I used to.

I'm paying for Netflix and Amazon Prime and I hardly watch that stuff either.

You now have to be 21 to buy cigarettes in Illinois.

In other news, you can go to war and vote at 18.

That's the same thing I've been saying about alcohol for forever. No I don't want a bunch of drunk immature 18 year olds fucking shit up, and frankly, I don't drink a whole lot myself (haven't had a beer in several years), but it still ain't right.

I've heard a lot of people saying nowadays that 18 is way too young to vote and as of late, I've been agreeing with them, but I guess that's a deeper conversation for a later date or another thread.

Anyway, what's this thing called liberty again? :-k

That's really not hard to do if you figure in sporting events on TV, not just regular shows. Hell, a college football game anymore because of commercials is nearly 4 hours long now all by itself. And with the ever expanding length of baseball, there's a good 3+ hours there too.

Okay, but that depends on who's in charge. The mainstream democrats don't want this leftist bullshit either. Yang's a capitalist who is trying to solve the for the coming technology overhaul of the economy - he has more ideas on how to help middle America than Trump does. The republicans are talking about mandating limits on technology progress to protect old jobs. That won't work. I'm just staying open minded to someone who is a potential transformative leader is all.

Listen to Shapiro's interview with him or read his book (which I have not yet). Yes, some of it is out there, but he's smart and reason-based.

Edit: If anyone has dailywire premium, let us know how Yang answered the race question. (DGX most likely?)

The power company is in the back alley again replacing the telephone poles. They sent a letter saying - If we're going to impede anyone's access to their garages or homes, we will notify you.

Well they blocked us without warning last week. Me and the sister made other arrangements after talking to one of the workers.

Today as I leave they have one side of the alley blocked off and are doing their thing. I go to Walmart and return to find out both sides of the alley are now being blocked with trucks and machinery and signs.

I'm being kind talking to one of the workers and point to where I live. He says, " Oh no! " with more than a little sarcasm, as if to say - Oh you pooor baby!

Then I kindly remind him that they were supposed to let people know about access BEFORE they started working and HAVE YOU INFORMED ME THIS TIME?

He gets all pissy and they have to move a truck and hold up some of the power lines/stop working as I drive to my garage.

I could have parked on the front street no problemo

I worked at a pretty toxic place GF and understand what you mean. I've seen people flip out and quit, people flip out and get fired...and some pretty shitty things in terms of treatment from management.

Saw two of the most capable and kind workers in a department full of idiots get marched out much like your coworker one day. They didn't have any performance or attendance issues, they were just not part of the 'core group' during one of our many restructurings.

I was happy with the way I left. Gave a month's notice, wrote a kind exit letter and was all smiles during my last weeks there.

I've seen too many people get marched out and once, I witnessed an actual physical tug of war between a guy I knew and his manager. They were arguing over which software he brought with him to the job and which software was company owned  It was horrible...

Holy fuck what a day. The lady in the office next door got pulled in the middle of the day, while she and I were mid-conversation about a file, and fired. The managers grabbed her shit from her desk, didn't see her again.

Can't say I didn't see it coming, excessive absenteeism (used up all her sick days this year by March), terrible attitude, didn't like to follow protocol. There's a long backstory but I'll spare all the details... still though, a 5-year employee and we're a small team of 6 (in an office of only 30, everyone is quite close), so it's a lot to digest. They brought in some giant dude to help with the firing (I'm unclear if he was a bodyguard/muscle type guy, an HR consultant, or both). Dramatic day. My head is still spinning.

That is rough, especially since the office is so small. I remember working for Agriculture in the Provincial Government and they had to cut back. Of an office of 100, they cut 10%, but no one knew who was going to be axed. Everyone was to go in their offices and they'd be called down for a "meeting" in the lunchroom if it was them. This went on for about 3 hours. There were some surprises - entire sections, and of course zero productivity that day for everyone. I was the computer tech support there, and got very few calls that day. I felt guilty because I knew I was safe.

One guy in Crop Insurance had to retrain, and became the guy who prepped (ie cut up) the animals for the Veterinarians to work on. I asked him how he was coping and he said "I'm the most overqualified, overpaid butcher in the world - I'm retiring in a year."

The next week I was in Vancouver supporting another Gov't office, installing RAM or something in a very small (3 person) office - all but 1 person was out on calls, and the lone woman there comes out sobbing to me "no point in installing that, they just phoned -- our entire section is gone as of the end of the month". She had just come back to work after winning a battle with Cancer and of course was emotionally all over the place with just that to cope with, let alone this. Shittiest month ever.

For whatever reason I didn't say or do anything on the way out.

In retrospect it wouldn't have mattered because my old company 'doesn't give referrals' as a policy. I have a whole other story about that and a conversation I had with the head of HR one year but won't bore you...

So yeah you work at a place for over 20 years and no referral. Causes a bit of a gap in your resume :-k

Typically your current supervisor would give you a personal referral outside of a company reference.

Wanna hear what happened to my last supervisor?

He was an in-shape black dude in his mid 30's. He coached and played flag football after work. Newly married with a new baby. Wife was a nurse, life was fine.

I quit, the company moves to new facility six months later, folding three huge buildings across the city into one.

Supervisor gets through that change...just barely as I heard it went south a million different ways and took two months longer than planned. Typical for the company.

Then one day he has a heart attack :| They had worked at the new place for about 30 days.

He's off work for six weeks, returns, and the company lets him go. Not sure if it was his choice or decision, but as usual I hear they treated him badly on the way out.

Further to that him and I were close friends and he calls me saying he doesn't want to give anyone a reference who worked there. Things got testy I guess and he gave the same explanation to four other employees who ended up leaving.

I know they made him sign something because he was generally an open and engaging guy...and he sounded a little scared on the phone.

Anyways...yeah heart attack at 36 and then laid off upon return. Thanks people!

Sorry man GF's post brought back a lot of bad memories...

I knew a CSR who was always positive and happy. She worked late every night and every weekend. She was one of those weird people who had kind of an inner light/strong spirit no matter what shit was going down at work. One of those terminally perky people who pisses you off because of the perkiness

She gets laid off and comes by my warehouse to say goodbye in person. She was pale, dark rings under her eyes and had this haunted look. Like a death camp survivor. She gives me a hug and thanks me for the help and laughs, then starts crying.

She had been there for over nine years and still didn't know why they let her go. It was always restructuring or change used as the excuse. When really it was mismanagement of processes, employees and funds by management. Classic corporate scenario...lots of money and work coming in from clients and resources wasted and misappropriated by middle management.

Yeah - me too Hal!

When I left a very underpaying computer telephone support job, I had developed a lot of macros, shortcuts boilerplate documents etc in Excel and Word designed to help me field the calls in a very fast fashion. The guy who was my "supervisor" (I had a actual qualification, he was basically a whizkid hacker 5 years my junior who thought he was the shit but was the most haphazard but brilliant individual) poo-pooed my methods, saying that I needed them as crutches etc. Stats came in and I was fielding about double the calls he was...anyway. He was too proud to ask how I exactly did it.

When I gave my 2 weeks notice, leaving for a job that payed about double what I was getting there, accounting short-changed me and gave me a paltry last cheque - "because I took too much vacation" which was BS as it was only a week and my shitty car left me stranded in the middle of f-ing nowhere, so I had to get a bus back, which took an extra day. "Don't worry about it" my boss said at the time. They also basically treated me like dirt the 2 weeks after I announced I was leaving, asking me to take out trash when I never did before etc.

So, on the last day I knew they were very lax at doing backups. I went in my personal folder where all my macros etc were kept, and wouldn't you know, my files somehow got deleted.

Alright the VR game was fucking awesome. They fully strap you out, leg and arm sensors, chest plate, headset, realistic feeling gun, mic and headphones. You're in a fairly large room with your buddies and can see each other and work together to survive waves and accomplish little missions. It was incredibly immersive and the game works very well. We were sweating by the end of it. We played the zombie mode where you're holding out in a house against waves of different zombies coming in all directions, there are mice crawling on your, shit you have to move away from and duck around. I was super impressed. At the end they do a video recap splicing footage of you looking dumb in the room, with what it looked like inside the VR which was hilarious. It's about $40/half hour which is steep but worth trying once.

Apparently, this lab, the same one I've been going to for the past 10 years, is no longer in my insurance's network. I look it up on my insurance's website and it doesn't say whether or not the lab in question is in the insurance's network. I go to the lab's website and they have a list saying which insurance's they will bill, and my insurance is on the list, but they don't say whether or not they're in-network with any of these insurances.

This so fucking wrong.

It should be required by law for insurances to maintain a list of in-network/contracted facilities, and it should be required by law that facilities inform the patient before services are rendered whether or not they're in network with your insurance, and not just "we'll bill your insurance".

This is deception.

When I first moved to Colorado, I never had any issues with allergies, and this was moving from Vermont where it's humid all the time and all kinds of things are growing everywhere to a basically very dry climate. But the longer I live here, the worse my allergies get. It started about 10 years after I moved here. And at first it was only the fall that really bothered me, now it's slowly becoming just as bad in the spring as it is in the fall. If it wasn't for Claritin, I would be way fucking miserable.

So I discovered something. I never ate burritos before and tried the El Monterey ones. They weren't bad, if not a little small and the wrap gets tough when you microwave them.

Found some no name ones at Superstore and this package contains cheese and bean, beef and bean and spicy beef and bean.

Same sort of scenario, you can microwave them or bake in the oven. I never bake them because it's 50-60 minutes and that's too much just to cook one or two burritos.

These no name burritos turn out to have about twice as much filling and their shells are softer, way more tasty after nuking. And about half price compared to El Monterey.

I had three of them last night along with some fried perogies and I was stuffed. I may not have microwaved the burritos long enough though because I don't feel great today :|

What I don't understand is how she was able to buy a weapon (being reported that she bought a pump shotgun upon getting here). She must have a fake ID or something because it's reported that she bought it legally from a gun dealer which would be impossible because you need to be a state resident with state issued ID to be able to buy a gun.

I may not have the best response to that because I look at it this way. What does an 18 year old need with a shotgun or a semi automatic rifle? I know the law and constitution say it's ok etc etc but teens purchasing weapons seems like a stand out to me. Perhaps 21 isn't any better than 18, but if it was me all states would make the purchase age 21.

You know I recently read that book on Columbine and three people were associated with helping those two assfucks get weapons. The two older guys (one they knew through work) were charged, yet the girl who bought the two main weapons at the gun show never got time. They literally were carded, then went right back to the same place and she stepped up with her legal ID and paid for the weapons.

Couldn't imagine how the people who enabled something like that must feel afterwards. They interviewed the girl weeks after Columbine and she seemed emotionless and robotic. And not remorseful at all.

We can argue about ages all you want, but frankly, I've known people who owned and were taught to handle firearms before they hit double digits in age, and I would trust them with my life. I know how and what their parents/guardians taught them. I know what they believe. I know how they react to things. It's not something you can just throw a blanket policy over. This is about individuals, the way they were raised, their mental states, what they believe and everything else that could contribute to them being either incredibly trustworthy individuals who respect the sanctity of life or the single most dangerous individuals on the planet. This is really a case-by-case issue, and as ridiculously hard and cost intensive as it would be, it needs to be dealt with that way. A one-size fits all policy will not work here.

You can buy a firearm in another state, but that weapon must be transferred to a gun shop with an FFL in your state of residence. Plus there will be a transfer fee to get the weapon shipped to your home state. There is no legal way she could have purchased a weapon in Colorado AND taken possession of it in Colorado as a resident of the state of Florida.

It's my opinion on the matter not an invitation to an argument unless you see it that way. If teens can't drink at certain ages, the same can apply to purchasing deadly weapons.

Just as you may know people under 20 who are responsible gun users, there are people under 20 who are not. It's a step, not a one size fits all policy.

If people aren't prepared to attempt change to existing policies and give instant pushback to even the idea of trying to move the age of purchase, that's an indictment to part of the larger problem.

The existing one size fits all policy is not working either as facts have borne out. It won't hurt the teens who have to wait three years.

But you're missing the major issue here, and I know you don't want to get into this, but it's important to understand: the right to keep and bear arms in this country is a foundational principle of our nation. It is a citizen's right. Technically speaking, there should not be any gun control laws at all in the United States. It is our birth right as citizens to own any weapon. It's in the Bill of Rights. It's not a privilege. Drinking alcohol, the ability to get a driver's license and drive a car, anything else you can name, are not fundamental rights here. They're awfully convenient privileges, especially that driving thing...

But this is the way our country was set up. This is how it is. I don't give a shit what politicians today say. If this country wants that to change then a Constitutional Amendment must be passed per the instructions in the US Constitution. Like they did with slavery, and women's right to vote, and civil rights... you can't just talk about policy like it's just something that can be done willy-nilly here. It doesn't work that way in this nation.

I understand how amendments work. They can be changed as you have noted above. You keep standing on this soap box speaking down to me like no one in the world can offer an opinion or suggestion if they don't live in Georgia and own a metric fuckton of weapons. Calling a suggestion of change "willy-nilly" and saying "it doesn't work that way in this nation" again belittles me. Doesn't work that way in my nation either pal.

Just because your nation 'was set up this way' and 'you don't give a shit what politicians say' does not mean the current system and policies are working.

Listen to me now. I made a comment and you made an argument. Your thoughts on treating gun ownership as a right, not a privilege and comparing the action to the privilege of driving are of course your own to support. I have a lot to say just about your comments above but I won't out of respect for you and our relationship.

But if you can, I want you to really think about what just transpired here. One person made a suggestion about changing the gun ownership age from 18 to 21 and you have made it sound like someone broke into your home and attempted to steal an organ from you. You've done this since we've met. Any whisper of possible change and you fly the stars and stripes, shouting for all to hear above the ramparts that your way is the best way and how dare you even suggest a small change! I suggest change because it's rarely been attempted before. And because change can be positive.

And you were right on one point. I didn't want to get into this. Your instant knee jerk reaction to any comments on the subject don't allow for any discussion. I have been polite, even supportive of certain aspects in the past. Maybe that's something I should note as well. If you don't agree with us all 100%, don't bother posting here. Thanks for censoring the idea of change, it really helps my understanding of some Americans and their mindset.

I'm out dude.

I think I've been pretty consistently pro 2nd amendment in discussions here, with that said I would be OK with them raising the purchase age to 21. With exceptions in certain circumstances. Military service being one example.

So it can't work the other way? An Illinois dealer can't process the purchase and transfer the weapon for me to take possession of it in Colorado?

To follow up, per the ATF:

6. May I lawfully ship a firearm to myself in a different State?

Any person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in the care of another person in the State where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to the owner “in the care of” the out-of-State resident. Upon reaching its destination, persons other than the owner must not open the package or take possession of the firearm.

7. May I lawfully ship a firearm directly to an out-of-State licensee, or must I have a licensee in my State ship it to him? May the licensee return the firearm to me, even if the shipment is across State lines?

Any person may ship firearms directly to a licensee in any State, with no requirement for another licensee to ship the firearm. However, handguns are not mailable through the United States Postal Service and must be shipped via common or contract carrier.(18 U.S.C. §§ 1715). Firearms shipped to FFLs for repair or any other lawful purpose may be returned to the person from whom received without transferring the firearm through an FFL in the recipient’s State of residence. FFLs may also return a replacement firearm of the same kind and type to the person from whom received. 18 U.S.C. § 922(a)(2)(A).

I don't think this directly answers your question (it doesn't mention having the FFL ship it out of state for you to pick up elsewhere), but I believe it's in the same ballpark.

I'm going back to the VR game tonight  Told a few other buddies how good it was and they were stoked so I set up another session for us. Kill some more zombies, then head to a bar and watch the playoffs. Should be a good night.

Where am I to go now that I've gone too far?

Land line is saying 'line in use' and I can't dial out. :-k

At the same time I have the lawn guys here aerating and power raking/first application of fertilizer.

Why can't things happen one at a time?

I always hit reply to posts, then hit the post quick reply button.

The tinypic plugin was delaying the ability to see/use the post quick reply button.

Seems okay right now.

It looks like the tinypic site is/was down which was causing the delay. I don't anyone that uses it. I'll have to ask Goof to take a look because I can't find anywhere to disable it. He's the one that added it in many moons ago.

Think my Grandma only has a day or two now.

She was already frail with dementia but caught phenomena a few days ago and declined into a coma. She asked for no IV months back when she was lucid so we're letting nature take it's course. She's comfortable in her room at a nursing home and all the extended family has been in to say goodbye.

Been hard to watch, she was the sharpest lady I knew until the last couple year. She could talk ancient history or current events in great depth for hours, read everything, books, Nat Geo, the newspaper cover to cover every day. She worked for the Canadian Intelligence Service, and had some fascinating insights on organized crime. She mapped our family tree back to the 1700's and could tell you endless stories of distance relatives from memory. She was also a wonderful pianist despite not reading music. You could hum her a tune and she'd freestyle it, and she played the organ in her church choir until her early 80's. Tough, self-taught, good Christian lady who grew up poor with strong values and raised a wonderful family. They just don't make them like her anymore.

Dementia is a bitch though, and despite living a long life, it's been hard on my mom and uncles to see her independence, sharp whit and memory completely disappear over the past year, sometimes seemingly in leaps and bounds overnight. She's in a nice nursing home but just hasn't been peaceful there at all. She'd constantly ask when she could go home...

I hope this last few hours or days go swiftly.
