Think my Grandma only has a day or two now.

She was already frail with dementia but caught phenomena a few days ago and declined into a coma. She asked for no IV months back when she was lucid so we're letting nature take it's course. She's comfortable in her room at a nursing home and all the extended family has been in to say goodbye.

Been hard to watch, she was the sharpest lady I knew until the last couple year. She could talk ancient history or current events in great depth for hours, read everything, books, Nat Geo, the newspaper cover to cover every day. She worked for the Canadian Intelligence Service, and had some fascinating insights on organized crime. She mapped our family tree back to the 1700's and could tell you endless stories of distance relatives from memory. She was also a wonderful pianist despite not reading music. You could hum her a tune and she'd freestyle it, and she played the organ in her church choir until her early 80's. Tough, self-taught, good Christian lady who grew up poor with strong values and raised a wonderful family. They just don't make them like her anymore.

Dementia is a bitch though, and despite living a long life, it's been hard on my mom and uncles to see her independence, sharp whit and memory completely disappear over the past year, sometimes seemingly in leaps and bounds overnight. She's in a nice nursing home but just hasn't been peaceful there at all. She'd constantly ask when she could go home...

I hope this last few hours or days go swiftly.

I used to think cancer was the worst disease until my Mom was diagnosed with dementia.

I had two guys here yesterday from the internet/phone provider and they were up on a ladder at the pole. One guy was a supervisor with all sorts of experience according to the initial guy handling the call and they couldn't do it. They've put a call into the 'cable guys', workers with the bucket on the truck and apparently they can get it fixed.

And dammit I should have taken a picture yesterday. First guy was Herbert, a little Filipino dude and his supervisor was a brown guy named Saru. I shit you not it said that right on his shirt and I asked for verification, then told him about his namesake on Discovery :lol:

So this happened yesterday right near work on the highway I take. Luckily it happened after I left work, but there are multiple fatalities and as of now the interstate is still closed. I had to go the long way around to avoid it this morning. I guess they are looking into the cause, which appeared to be a semi that lost his brakes coming down out of the mountains. The area where it happened is near where it starts becoming flat again after a long descent from the mountains, and it's a long downhill run and steep and here at work, especially in the nice weather when the doors are all open, we can smell hot/burning brakes all the time. Even this morning on the way in I saw a semi pulled over and there was smoke coming from his brakes. They are saying it ivolved at least 12 passenger vehicles and 3 semis.

So this happened yesterday right near work on the highway I take. Luckily it happened after I left work, but there are multiple fatalities and as of now the interstate is still closed. I had to go the long way around to avoid it this morning. I guess they are looking into the cause, which appeared to be a semi that lost his brakes coming down out of the mountains. The area where it happened is near where it starts becoming flat again after a long descent from the mountains, and it's a long downhill run and steep and here at work, especially in the nice weather when the doors are all open, we can smell hot/burning brakes all the time. Even this morning on the way in I saw a semi pulled over and there was smoke coming from his brakes. They are saying it ivolved at least 12 passenger vehicles and 3 semis.

Update on this...ended up being 28 vehicles (24 passenger vehicles and 4 semis) involved in the crash and 4 dead. The driver is a 23 year old Cuban National here on a green card. The trucking company he drives for is based out of Houston and they are a small company running 5 trucks. In less than the past 2 years, they have been cited with more than 30 violations, 10 of which are brake problems with their trucks. Even worse, 2 of the violations are for employing drivers that don't know enough English to read highway and traffic signs (which legally you must be able to if you want to drive in the US). What makes this important is that there's video of him before the accident, approximately 5 or so miles back up the mountain showing him blowing past a runaway truck ramp and almost running a pickup truck off the road. He had lost control of his vehicle that far back and he didn't even make an effort to use the runaway truck ramp.

I was reading the local paper that was delivered today and noticed in the obituaries that a guy I graduated high school with passed away a few days ago.

He and I were bitter enemies back in the day. He was a bully back then, and even though he was close to a full foot bigger than me and probably weighed 100 lbs more (he was a big dude, played football for the high school team), I stood up to him and fought back the best I could. We never came to actual blows, but damn if we didn't try. He would have made me a stain on the sidewalk.

We never patched things up, and I never really had a good thing to say about him... in fact, nobody I went to high school with did. Still, it's very sad, as he was my age and he left behind a wife and several teen-aged kids. It's also scary. It hits close to home.

David, regardless of our past, I hope you have found peace. I'll say a prayer for you and your family. :rip:

Second wild day of the last few weeks at the office for me. They shitcanned the big boss of our branch. We're about 35 people in Vancouver, with a much larger head office in Ontario. The highest ranking person of the branch was this Director of Marketing guy who our underwriting managers (including my boss) didn't directly report to but he was still sort of considered everyone's boss if that makes sense. Young-ish guy for his seniority, maybe 45, tall strapping dude that our broker clients all liked. Wasn't a good leader for office though, never really showed up, didn't seem to care about us even though he was the most senior person and the de-facto office runner. More of an old-school, Mad Men type guy who spent his time taking clients for lunch and golfing on the road. Guess head office had enough, VP's flew in and made the surprise announcement today at 10am. It was a weird vibe, some of the staff were holding back smiles because they didn't like how little he did to advocate for us back to head office, whereas others were in tears. Not a great looking firing two staff in the course of a month either after going 7+ years without any drama - but the bottom line is neither were pulling weight so it's a wake-up call for anyone mailing it in.

Interesting for me though... fired guy's boss is Chief of Marketing and probably our next CEO. Pulled me aside for a meeting, asked if I'm ready for more, asked how well I get a long with my current boss (who I really like) and if I thought we could work together and run our entire department. I'm not holding my breath, this guy is a mysterious british dude, very smart and proper, pretty scary but blows smoke often too... anyways it felt promising I think. I'm feeling a tad stagnant in my career at the moment so change is welcome.

Got a nice little notice in the mail from the county yesterday. They've reassessed property values again (2nd time in 2 years) and they have raised the value of my house just more than $81,000. That's a 27.5% increase. :| Awesome, because we don't pay nearly enough in taxes now.

And funny how when values go down because the market cools off that the county is in no hurry to reassess the property values then.

I just got my summer tires put on last week and I have a slow leak in one of them. Noticed it last summer, took it to a place and they checked it in the tire bath saying they couldn't find the leak.

It's slow, less than a pound per day but I know it's not the tire sensor because I have good hand gauge.

So it's probably the valve stem or the bead on the rim. And right now is the busiest time for tire places because everyone is changing their winter tires.

Okay, here is one thing that really pisses me off about the 'immigrants just want to come here and become Americans' rhetoric that they are always spinning. This is from a local news story here in Denver metro. They have been redeveloping and gentrifying the city all over, there were lots of ghetto neighborhoods in certain areas of the city and with housing and real estate being super hot in Denver, people are buying up and redeveloping a lot of the run down areas.


Although neighbors want to see development, they fear the proposed plans could lead to displacement in the area.

Tomorrow is a tough anniversary for me :(

My Dad cut out all sugar in the last years of his life due to a shitty comment from his doctor saying people of his age rarely make any beneficial corrections to their health habits.

His weight dropped, his blood sugar level dropped and his overall blood pressure dropped. All the result of his self imposed restrictions :thumbsup:

But he could never resist a Dairy Queen Blizzard. We had a few before he passed away and I'm going to treat myself to one tomorrow in his honor.

I actually want to see that New Mutants movie. It's supposed to be a horror movie set in the X-Men universe. Anya Taylor Joy and Maisie Williams are in it, along with the shaggy guy from Stranger Things. But this is the second time they're doing reshoots. They're saying they're trying to make it more scary. Also they're dumping Jon Hamm's Mister Sinister for an undisclosed villain played by Antonio Banderas.

It was supposed to be the start of a new trilogy, but since Disney acquired Fox, they're saying this will be the last (Fox-era) X-Men franchise movie. I guess they wanna do they're own thing and put it back in Marvel's hands.

Taking it to be checked at a different place tomorrow morning. They're so busy (people getting winter tires taken off, summer tires on) I have to leave the car there for the day and walk home. Then walk back when it's hopefully fixed. Place is like four miles away :lol:

Ever since that chick from Florida flew here last month threatening to shoot up a school, there have been threats of school violence nearly every day against different schools (the actual shooting in Highlands Ranch earlier this week notwithstanding). So I guess today it is my kid's school's turn. :| Got an e-mail from the school late last night saying there was a threat of violence today against her high school. They checked it out with the police and it was deemed not credible, so school will go on as normal today.

Who the fuck thinks this shit is funny? I would bet that 99% of these phony threats are from kids. What kind of parent raises a kid that thinks these incidents are funny, phony or not? Fuck, what the hell is wrong with this fucking world anymore.

Wife texted me a little while ago and said she told the kid about the e-mail threat, now she (the kid) is all freaked out over it. :| I just texted her and tried to convey to be aware, but don't freak out too much because it was already investigated by the police and deemed to be 'not credible' and that if they thought there was actually any real danger, they would have canceled school today.

I know violence isn't an answer to things, but I swear if I got my hands on the people making these fake fucking threats and freaking people out, I would kill them.

I got a job at an oil company as a summer student in 1985. I got about 5 minutes training on this device that was pretty much a microfiche reader and over the course of a week learned how to input township and range maps...minor geophysical bullshit.

I meet this older guy who had worked there for a few years and he asked where I went to college, what degrees I had, where did I get my experience with the machine from, etc.

After telling him only high school and that I learned what I was doing on the fly over the past few days, he stormed off. Someone else told me he took 4 years getting his degree and before I showed up, he used to be the guy who was doing the same job functions. Sorry pal :rofl:
