True story, some guy in Vancouver had a ring of people smuggling him tens of thousands of dollars of TJ's merch into Vancouver and opened a store here called "Pirate Joe's." It was a huge hit, people loved it but no surprise TJ's shut them down and it was a whole big thing. There's even a wikipedia page about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirate_Joe%27s

I'll leave on this note though: I had to make a lot of calls today, to cancel a lot of plans between some work events and a vacation - many of which had strict no refund policies. All of the folks I talked to at hotels and airlines were incredibly accommodating, understanding and kind, even though I'm sure they are swamped. All of them gave refunds or credits despite clearly having no obligation to do so. Tough situations can show you some real good in folks.

We've got a very pro-active business continuity program that's been practicing for this kind of thing for years, but I'm shocked at how many of our staff are not prepared to work from home despite being given so many opportunities to speak up. Many of us have work laptops, but those who don't can log-in to their systems remotely and have been asked REPEATEDLY to test it.... and yet I have at least three coworkers who claim they don't have functioning home computers or laptops (two said their kids keep breaking them!?). So our poor one IT person is scrambling to restore old laptops from storage for them all before we get sent home. What if we had a fire or earthquake and there was no warning? Fucking idiots.

Yes, particularly as being tired her own immune system will be run down. I think it's disgusting how they treat doctors and hospital staff at times.

Illinois Governor "Toilets" Pritzker closed all bars and restaurants (pick and delivery still available). Not making this up, the fuckwad got pissed off because people were celebrating St Patrick's Day... IN CHICAGO.

I have to admit, I am pretty stunned that a Governor can just decree that private businesses may not conduct business. Who's next? What are the limits on this authority?

The governor here already ordered all ski resorts to close earlier. I posted about it the other day. When a State of Emergency is declared, it gives the governor VERY broad powers. Here's a local news story detailing what the governor can do. And I'm sure it's similar in every state.

How much power does Gov. Polis have during a state of emergency?
By Joe St. George - FOX 31 Denver

DENVER (KDVR) — Gov. Jared Polis has declared a state of emergency over COVID-19 concerns.

On Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began referring to the outbreak as a pandemic.

Now, a question is: how much power does Polis have? In short, he has a lot.

A recent document prepared by Colorado’s non-partisan Office of Legislative Legal Services details Polis’ wide-ranging powers.

Polis’ powers include but are not limited to:

Using the Colorado National Guard to carry out orders
Direct an evacuation of any area
Commandeer any private property
Suspend selling of alcoholic beverages, firearms and explosives
Unilaterally order the buying or taking of medicines and vaccines
Order physicians and hospitals to take or stop taking patients
Issue a quarantine of a person or property
Destroy objects that threaten public health
Determine how to safely dispose of corpses
Provide up to $5,000 to impacted families
Change how state business is conducted
Relocate the seat of government

Do you use a lot of alcohol? I dont think I have even one bottle in the house.

I have several uses for them. General cleaning and medical. I use it frequently. A bottle will last me about two and a half weeks. The only reason I bought so many this time around was because I was frustrated with not being able to find them for several days and I didn't want to run into that issue later on. That and free shipping at Walmart.

I bought a whole mess of stuff that I use frequently that seems to be in high demand right now. Regardless of how long this coronavirus panic lasts, I should be good on the supplies I need for a good long while.

I got to keep my sick grandson a few weeks ago and thought I should disinfect the thermometer after each use. I found an old bottle of rubbing alcohol in my shop, been there at least 10 years.
I figured what could go bad in it but decided to google it first. Turns out several things. The alcohol can leach through the plastic breaking it down on the inside of the bottle leaving you some really nasty water.
Sounds like you'll use yours before then but watch the dates on them unless they are in glass.

You know, as serious as the virus pandemic was last week, I wasn't overly concerned about myself so much. I was doing things by reducing the amount of times I would physically go to the store and small things like that. But now with basically EVERYTHING shutting down and morons hoarding everything that's essential, I'm actually getting a little worried about some things.

And, the wife found out that her mandatory furlough from work may extend beyond just this week. And they haven't said whether they are going to pay the employees beyond just the first week yet either.

Yea, I have concerns too. For one, because I'm gone 4 days a week, I don't have more than a few days worth of food back home and a few days worth here at work. IF things stay as they are currently, I will be fine.

So far my job is secure, so money isn't an issue, but I'm definitely thinking about preparing for a lockdown. Biggest issue is where? At home I'm in the city with no income, here at work I have access to plenty of essentials and the general store is pretty well stocked and am pretty well isolated as the boats just started last week so there is probably only a couple hundred people here and most are pretty well stocked from being here all winter with limited access to and from.... My place on the other island still doesn't have ferry access and my water won't be turned on for a few weeks.

In the current toilet paper wars, they showed stock and allowed me to order some basics. Just a few things. Then the order picker (driver) starts substituting including no toilet paper. I tried to ask for the person to respond to me and they did not. Why would they? If they can get out of the store before I press cancel, then they deliver whatever and get paid. Now I feel for the driver, but I was not in the mood to get bamboozled. [CANCEL]

It's not just Whole Foods. I placed an order for delivery from Safeway this past Sunday. Earliest delivery window was yesterday, so I placed the order 3 days before the delivery. Nothing I ordered on Sunday was shown as out of stock, so I ordered everything we needed/wanted. Toilet paper, milk, fresh chicken, ground pork among other things. I checked the app the other day (24 hours before delivery) and all those things I listed were shown as out of stock, but my pending order showed no change. So I was excited to actually be getting some actual stuff. Get the e-mail that my order is on the way and guess what I didn't get? No chicken, no toilet paper, no milk, and no ground pork. All listed as out of stock. WTF? I was so pissed. What's the point of taking online orders DAYS before the actual delivery if you aren't going to set that stuff aside for people that placed the order way ahead of time? Why not just have a big button on the app that says "I'M FEELING LUCKY" and then deliver to me whatever the fuck you want instead of what I actually ordered WHEN IT WAS STILL IN FUCKING STOCK?

Well that's good that she can work from home.

My sister and her husband are both now not working. A lot more (including myself) are concerned.

My boss required us to go back into a partial shutdown to conserve electricity, all the houses I work on we turned off the furnaces, hot water tanks and refrigerators. Also put a strict policy on ordering any supplies. I (for now) managed to convince him that I still have plenty to do that doesn't require much spending other than my pay.

It was my mistake. I had my left leg up on my knee and it fell down when I was reaching for something up on the sink. When the leg fell down, it caught the bend and the force of the hit broke one of the PVC screw collars. The pipe just fell off. Water everywhere. I wiped it up and have been sitting there ever since with a hair dryer blowing around the edges of the tiles where water could have gotten to to try to ensure it gets dry.

Ok, so I bought a $4 PVC p-trap out at Lowes. Only one of the nuts on the original trap arm was busted. Everything else was fine. So all I had to do was find a replacement nut, but I couldn't find any by themselves, so I grabbed the p-trap cause it looked like it had the same size nuts on it. I came home, removed the trap arm and replaced the washer and nut, reinstalled the trap arm on the marvel connector, and reinstalled the old p-trap (cause the new one was a little too long), tightened everything down, and voila! My sink works again without spewing water all over the place under the sink.

And Lowes was packed like sardines. I was actually scared to go inside. I tried to avoid people as best as I could. If somebody was walking toward me, I tried to go to the other side of the aisle. If I couldn't, then I turned and rolled away. Yay! Paranoia!

I bet people thought I was nuts.

Also seeing some data on food waste in a year when people realize their crates of beans and tomatoes are expired....

Closing liquor stores is insane IMO... how many alcoholics are there you figure? Alcohol withdrawal can actually kill you. Not to mention the negative effect of closing down access to booze... let me have a glass of red wine with my dinner, I'm stressed.

Cool note here is that the breweries are all hurting as they make a lot of their profit from on-site sales in their bars/tasting rooms (which are closed), so a bunch of them have transitioned their usual servers into delivery staff (as have restaurants), and you can get micro-breweries to deliver beer to your doorstep at great prices right now  I'm seeing their ads all over my social media for beer delivery, it's tempting.

Ours too

I don't have any kids but I know the schools around here have been suspended indefinitely, and they're going to move to remote/online classes. My nephew's high school up in NY state (mainland NY, not the 5 boroughs on the islands) is closed until April 13th (tentatively). I guess they're gonna play it by ear to see when it would be a good time to reopen. I doubt they're gonna reopen any time soon. My brother said they won't move to online classes because there are some families in the school district that don't have home computers (How the fuck does that even happen in 2020?!). Anyway, it sucks for my nephew, because he's a senior, and he just won the sectionals wrestling championship in his weight class and was ranked top 5 going into the state tournament that's supposed to take place in late April. Anyway, he's rolling with the punches but both my brother and I are pissed off for the kid. My brother never made the state tournament when he wrestled, and I got bounced out of my state tournament in the first round as a junior. I never got to wrestle my senior year. The kid already made us proud, but the entire family was hoping he could do some serious damage at state. He really wanted it. Not to mention that his senior trip could be cancelled, and prom, and all the stuff that goes along with your last year in high school. His older brother got to do it all (but he never wrestled, the derelict), and we all were hoping that the younger one would have the best year ever. Now this shit. And to think, there are kids all across the nation that are going through the same shit. Man, fuck China.

I wrestled before I was disabled. And played football. I became disabled in the summer between my junior and senior years of high school around the 4th of July in '92. If you're asking how would you practice that today in the day and age of Kung Flu, you could do isolation drills on your own, but eventually you're gonna want to square off against live opponents in practice. Obviously, it would have to wait until all this was done.
