Holy shit. An apparently otherwise healthy 64 year old North Vancouver dentist died today after catching COVID at a dental conference March 3-5. My mom saw her dentist in North Van just a few days after and had been trying to hear back from them whether her dentist was there at that conference in Vancouver too, but they were closed and never replied.... Thankfully the window has passed where she'd be symptomatic but that hits close to home, my mom is in her early 60's too and gets bad chest colds.

Also my wife had to go to the COVID ward today. They're only allowing N95 masks to be used when performing procedures on patients because of PPE shortages, so she just had to talk to the patient from the doorway unmasked. This is fucked!

You know, it occurs to me that I can watch a lot of fucked up shit on the internet. Sometimes I think it's enlightening to see it, shows you how fragile our dumb bodies are, or maybe it's just morbid curiosity seeing people getting hurt doing dumb shit... but whenever I start a fucked up video and see there's fire involved, I'm out  Of all things, fire is the one that gets me even if it's people just asking for it.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with it. It's just like something out of an operatic aria...

But since you're in the oil business can you or anyone else here explain how a higher oil price benefits Americans (I don't see it benefiting Australians) :-k

A typical view in the media would be something like the following:

"So how did he respond to the worst weekly unemployment claims in American history? By changing the subject to the oil industry, suggesting that the Saudis and Russians might just be cutting production. As he bizarrely tweeted to a shell-shocked nation, “If it happens, will be GREAT for the oil & gas industry.”

Only this sociopath of a president could imagine that what’s good for the oil industry is good for the souls of 10 million newly unemployed Americans."

The US is the largest producer of oil and natural gas in the world. But unlike say the Russians and the Saudis, our production is not state controlled, it's all private (sans the strategic reserve). If the market gets too low (e.g. Saudis flood the supply to create price wars, international demand artificially low in a crisis or war, etc) US oil production become unprofitable and operations quickly scale back. That's what Kevin was describing.

So the Saudis cutting production now keeps US production working. I believe it's about 10 million jobs and about 5% of GDP?

Someone else may know more.... but that's the rest of the story as I know it....

Lost, RBP is mostly correct. My point was not to support high oil prices in general, but right now. Drilling companies work for lease owners . The rigs are rented by the companies (contracted for $x per day). Bottom line is, in the US, if oil goes below about $30/barrel, most drilling stops. If it stays below that, all drilling stop. If all drilling in the US stops, there will be a national recession. Fact, not opinion. Global effect will be substantial. All that said, theres also the fact that if the US stops drilling, world demand put more $$ into China, Russia, OPEC, etc. All pretty much our enemies.
So, my post was not in support of higher prices in general, but in supp8of above $30/ barrel. Ideally, 40-50/ barrel is great. This range provides a healthy profit, allows for research and development, new practices, etc, etc.

I believe his response is correct. It's my opinion that he recognizes the inherent danger to our economy of a price war, and is proactively doing what he can to prevent it.
As for Trump himself, I dislike him. Always have, even back when he was a citizen, and fully supporting the DNC. Hes an asshat, granted, but sociopathic? No, hes very intelligent.

I really don't get the approach of WHO/CDC not to recommend masks from the get-go. I don't know if it was because they were trying to stall the panic buying of masks to get them to hospitals, or something else, but it hurt their credibility. Apparently even a cloth masks can reduce your chance of transmitting a virus you're carrying by roughly half. If we all buy into wearing something over our faces, it should have an impact. Some Asian countries are fully bought into mask wearing, maybe because they remember SARS more than we do?

My parents have N95 masks from when they were taking care of my grandma but refuse to wear them 'because nobody else at the store is doing it, we'd look like freaks.'

I think I disagree, I see what's happening in New York and Italy as strong evidence that the healthcare system would be crippled if strong measures aren't taken to 'break the curve' and slow the virus' spread to a manageable rate. The economy will recover but lives are precious. I don't disagree with that number, but part of me would probably still see it this way: If the US has 40,000 deaths with quarantines like we've never seen in our lifetimes, that is roughly the average number (https://aspe.hhs.gov/cdc-%E2%80%94-influenza-deaths-hhs-response-rfc)killed annually by the flu where we take essentially no quarantine measures. If that's the case, I think it's going to be easy to say 'we overreacted,' while nullifying what we sacrificed just to keep it to 40,000 deaths (hospitalizations will be another interesting metric to look back on). I think we'll eventually have accurate models to tell us how bad it could've been without closing entertainment/retail/hospitality/etc, but it if we keep deaths under 40 up to maybe even 100,000, it will surely be common for people to be critical, and lament the time and money lost for the same cost in lives as a flu season, rather than reflecting on what we prevented.

One study estimates that if the world hadn’t taken action against the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the world would have become infected and 40 million lives could been lost (https://www.imperial.ac.uk/mrc-global-infectious-disease-analysis/covid-19/report-12-global-impact-covid-19/), but the mortality rate is a moving target still, so grain of salt.

One thing I can say is that I can't imagine having the job of weighing measures that cost jobs versus stemming a pandemic, but when faced with these types of reports as the best estimates available I'd probably pick the latter.

It will be interesting to see how areas that don't impose strict quarantines fair (Belarus looks like it will lead the charge).

FYI

In explaining Sweden’s current strategy, experts point to other underlying factors: The country has high levels of trust, according to the historian Lars Tragardh, and a strict law in the Constitution prohibits the government from meddling in the affairs of the administrative authorities, such as the public health agency.

“Therefore, you don’t need to micromanage or control behavior at a detailed level through prohibitions or threat of sanctions or fines or imprisonment,” Mr. Tragardh said in a phone interview. “That is how Sweden stands apart, even from Denmark and Norway.”

I agree. With the number of people that are still traveling, going out on unnecessary shopping trips etc. If we would have kept MOST of the country at work but had guidelines about working from home if possible, no large gatherings and the same social distancing, would the "curve" be any different or not?

I feel we could have slowed the spread without tanking the economy. Honestly in my case I would come into contact with very few people if I was allowed to work. And very few people if I were allowed to go to my summer home. (Not allowed because the property is zoned "campground".)

I would say that number could be even higher and still be acceptable. One of the worst years in recent history for the seasonal flu was just a few years ago (it was either 2016/2017 or 2017/2018, I don't remember now). The CDC (which I discovered doesn't keep actual deaths from the seasonal flu, which was mind boggling, but I guess it's because actual flu deaths aren't reported accurately) said that in the most recent bad year, between 61K and 80K Americans died from the flu. Granted, that's on the high end of seasonal flu deaths, but if this new Kung Flu is sooooooo much deadlier, then I would say that the number of deaths could be double that (up to 160K) and it will look like the government overreacted by destroying the economy. Not to mention the ancillary deaths that still could happen because of the collapse of the economy from the Wu Flu, like suicide from depression, drug addiction and overdose, domestic violence, just to name a few. So yeah, you are possibly saving lives because of the lock down, but how many people is the government killing because of the lockdown?

And one report I saw that granted, was not verified, said that if you die from something that normally would have been listed as natural causes, they are testing these asymptomatic people, and if they come back as positive for the Flu Manchu, that is what they are listing the the CoD as Wu Flu, whether that's what caused the death or not. So does that mean that the death toll is being artificially inflated? I don't know, but if it is, that's wrong, very wrong.

I stand by what I said, the government went way too far.

Tried my first grocery pick-up yesterday. I would have done it earlier, but it's been hell trying to schedule a time at Walmart for grocery pick-up, they fill up fast. But was able to secure one yesterday (shopping online Sunday morning). Worked pretty well actually. You do your shopping online, once you pick your pick-up time, you have an hour to checkout or else you lose your slot. You have the option of allowing substitutions on things or to just leave it off if it's out of stock, and you have the option of refusing the substitution at pick-up if you don't want it. Whole thing was free too. When you are on your way to go pick-up, you "check in" on the app and then when you get there, you tell them what spot you're parked in and they bring everything out to you. I was probably only waiting about 5 minutes before they brought my stuff out.

I think I still prefer shopping in person (I do about 99% of the grocery shopping), but in these new times, it worked pretty well. Also signed up with Instacart and have had groceries delivered a few times. Same thing as with Walmart, getting deliver times is hit or miss depending on when you are trying to shop and get things delivered. Not sure if I'll keep Instacart after the pandemic dies down ($9.99/month and you get unlimited free deliveries so long as you hit $35 and you can shop from a bunch of different stores from their app), but for now it works out pretty well, especially since the wife is stuck working from home, so that allows us to be really flexible on when we can have stuff delivered.

Trying to avoid going out to stores as much as I can. There are some things that you need to go buy in person, but as far as grocery shopping, other than what I mentioned above, it can pretty much be done from home and have it delivered or go and pick it up. Not sure if I will keep doing it after the pandemic recedes, but for now it's working out pretty well. Again, the biggest problem is getting delivery or pick-up slots in a timely matter.

Yeah, that's why I went with Instacart. First, the delivery fee was cheaper than the individual charge from either Safeway or Kroger, and second, I can get delivery times a lot sooner than the individual stores had. Safeway and Kroger were both out between 4 and 6 days. Instacart I can usually get a same day delivery on a week day. And here's the time when everything becomes ridiculously frustrating.

One of my smoke detectors has started the intermittent beep in between long silences to tell me the battery is dying. The problem is it's one of 3 smoke detectors on the other side of the house and I'm never over there when it actually beeps to determine which one it is. It's beeped twice so far separated by 30 minutes. Watch it start beeping at relatively close intervals at 3am.

I haven't changed any of the batteries in 3 years, so maybe I should change them all.

Firefox Extensions: Privacy Badger, Adblocker Ultimate (w/ English Filter and Adblock Warning Removal List enabled). The browser's Enhanced Tracking Protection is enabled for most sites. Privacy Badger is pretty interesting. I don't know if it's actually doing anything, but it's not slowing anything down, so whatever. I don't really use Firefox for a whole lot. If I go to Fox News on it, I'll get that bottom thing telling me I have an adblocker on and asking me to disable it, but whatever, I don't spend a whole lot of time on the site. I can't really say anything about a whole lot of other sites on it. Most of my banking and purchasing is done on another uber secure browser, and I use MS's Edge browser to check my outlook email. Most everything else I do in Opera.

I've got 5 electrics, 2 acoustics, 3 combo amps, and God knows how many stomp boxes. There's got to be at least 20 of them. I'm a pedal junkie. The funny thing is that I don't have all of the boxes ticked off: I don't have a germanium fuzz, an octave, an octave fuzz... I don't have any synth pedals. Got my tracking # on the new guitar. Its probably not going to get here before I go back to work Tuesday. It also seems I'll have to pay some import taxes (since guitar was more than $800) it's not clear how much I'll be taxed. Haven't found that anywhere yet.

Change your taxes so you owe next year, Then make her pay half.

Our pay is so vastly different I wouldn't even begin to be able to make that happen... I pay in taxes close to half what she actually grosses before taxes.

In case the stuff you hear about the novel coronavirus is confusing, I thought I'd summarize all I learned by watching the news.

The Rules:

1. Basically, you can't leave the house for any reason, but if you have to, then you can.

2. Masks are useless, but maybe you have to wear one, it can save you, it is useless, but maybe it is mandatory as well.

3. Stores are closed, except those that are open.

4. You should not go to hospitals unless you have to go there. Same applies to doctors, you should only go there in case of emergency, provided you are not too sick.

5. This virus is deadly but still not too scary, except that sometimes it actually leads to a global disaster.

6. Gloves won't help, but they can still help.

7. Everyone needs to stay HOME, but it's important to GO OUT.

8. There is no shortage of groceries in the supermarket, but there are many things missing when you go there in the evening, but not in the morning. Sometimes.

9. The virus has no effect on children except those it affects.

10. Animals are not affected, but there is still a cat that tested positive in Belgium in February when no one had been tested, plus a few tigers here and there…

11. You will have many symptoms when you are sick, but you can also get sick without symptoms, have symptoms without being sick, or be contagious without having symptoms. Oh, my Gosh!

12. In order not to get sick, you have to eat well and exercise, but eat whatever you have on hand and it's better not to go out, well, but no…

13. It's better to get some fresh air, but you get looked at very wrong when you get some fresh air, and most importantly, you don't go to parks or walk. But don’t sit down, except that you can do that now if you are old, but not for too long or if you are pregnant (but not too old).

14. You can't go to retirement homes, but you have to take care of the elderly and bring food and medication.

15. If you are sick, you can't go out, but you can go to the pharmacy.

16. You can get restaurant food delivered to the house, which may have been prepared by people who didn't wear masks or gloves. But you have to have your groceries decontaminated outside for 3 hours. Pizza too?

17. Every disturbing article or disturbing interview starts with " I don't want to trigger panic, but…"

18. You can't see your older mother or grandmother, but you can take a taxi and meet an older taxi driver.

19. You can walk around with a friend but not with your family if they don't live under the same roof.

20. You are safe if you maintain the appropriate social distance, but you can’t go out with friends or strangers at the safe social distance.

21. The virus remains active on different surfaces for two hours, no, four, no, six, no, we didn't say hours, maybe days? But it takes a damp environment. Oh no, not necessarily.

22. The virus stays in the air - well no, or yes, maybe, especially in a closed room, in one hour a sick person can infect ten, so if it falls, all our children were already infected at school before it was closed. But remember, if you stay at the recommended social distance, however in certain circumstances you should maintain a greater distance, which, studies show, the virus can travel further, maybe.

23. We count the number of deaths but we don't know how many people are infected as we have only tested so far those who were "almost dead" to find out if that's what they will die of…

24. We have no treatment, except that there may be one that apparently is not dangerous unless you take too much (which is the case with all medications). Orange man bad.

25. We should stay locked up until the virus disappears, but it will only disappear if we achieve collective immunity, so when it circulates… but we must no longer be locked up for that?”

Ohio isn't going to start accepting 1099 claims until the end of next week. First checks won't be deposited until May 15 at the earliest.

If there's mask police, vacuum police seems like less of a stretch.
