I was going to use a portion of the stimulus check for charity (more to Team Rubicon), and possible a 9mm.

I decided that I work with enough people that could use a boost that charity should start at home.

Coworker 1: New baby, boyfriend has an alcohol problem. She doesn't have waterproof shoes and we have to walk between housing units. A couple hundred at JCP will help her. Done.
Coworker 2: Got screwed by her ex into transferring her student loans to her ex father in law. Barely makes bills. She needed as therapist. Got her in to see my therapist. Gave her the $100 for the first 4 insurance co-pays. Done.
Coworker 3: Having her first baby. Registry items to help mom. Done.
Coworker 4: Having her first baby. Waiting on her registry....

I feel good about it. It wasn't my money to begin with, I'm still working, and this little bit helps them a lot. I will probably still send some to the organization that runs the group home for my disabled niece.

Awesome that you chose to do that, you're a better person than I am, but you are wrong about it not being your money. If you pay federal taxes, then it sure is hell is your money.

Took the kid out for her very first driving practice yesterday. Luckily there's a huge Park and Ride parking lot nearby and on the weekends there's not a lot of people there taking the bus. So, we did it for about half an hour just getting her used to how the vehicle handles, steering, brakes, accelerator. She did okay considering it was her very first time behind the wheel. I don't think we topped 10 mph the whole time though. But I think it will be several more parking lot lessons before she will be ready to actually get out on the road. And when we do that, I'm going to have to get her outside of the city where there is far less traffic before I throw her into the mess that is Denver metro traffic.

My first time, my Dad was the calm and silent teacher. He said once, "It's ok to take your foot off the brake and give it a little gas." We drove a few laps around our neighborhood block. He told me I was a natural.

This is the same man that grabbed my brother by the throat and lifted him up in the air with one hand for stealing a cigarette from him. My brother was 16 at the time and weighed close to 160 lbs.

I tried to keep my cool because she's already scared/nervous enough about learning to drive. I know that getting upset with her wouldn't do either of us any good. And even though we were in a VERY large parking lot, there were still some close calls with some curbs and a light pole.

What age are you allowed on the roads over there, is it 16? 17 over here - you can then apply for a provisional licence and drive under supervision.

Posted this elsewhere, but am honestly curious of yalls opinions.
Trying to figure out the logic. If folks cant work, theres no taxable income, much less food. How is this a good thing for the uber lords( political party)? Politics, on local, state and federal levels, are extremely dependent upon the tax $$ raised. If say 40% of the working population is no longer working, doesn't that immediately equal a 40% reduction in the tax base? Once the dumbasses that we have all elected figure this out, Covid19 will disappear faster than a $20 bill in a politician's hand.

Except that the job losses are at the lower end of the scale and the taxes are paid at the top. The business taxes are probably a larger issue. But yes, tax losses are massive and the emergency fund distributions are devastating. The interesting question is why we have not seen any government furloughs. If they can't recover budgets, why haven't they reduced expenses?

I'm pretty sure that's a standard practice industry wide, not just with Amazon. I've seen Walmart being accused of the same thing (sort of) by banning people from returning items to the store if they return an unusual amount of items. If people are "serial returners" then usually something shady is going on. Personally though, I don't know anyone that has had their account terminated because of it.

The problem is, my Mom gets me to order shit for her all the time, and she keeps about half of it. The rest, she makes me return. She has her own account but because I'm subscribed to Prime, she wants that free shipping. I'm about ready to cut her off.

Yeah, I'd put a stop to that, mother or not. Because all those returns will just go as a mark against you. Why doesn't she just spring for Prime if she buys that much stuff? I mean it pays for itself in the free shipping alone.

My folks just ordered this Ooni Koda outdoor pizza oven. Looks awesome, excited to try it. I think it gets up to about 900 degrees so it'll cook a pizza in a minute or two! Unfortunately they live in a municipality where they can't burn wood outdoors for cooking, so it'll have to be gas, but that's okay.

corona Possible cause

I was reading tonight and found some interesting things that are caused by dust from like construction sites type dust from drywall , brick laying granite its in a lot of different rocks its in our soil. As I continue I noticed that it's called silicosis/ which is an opportunistic type issue that causes virus and infections like staph/MRSA which America has had a lot of this past ten years or more and causes are from the crystalline silica that's in just about everything! Then I thought to myself who's the main state that's dying from the corona and its New York upper area also where two twin towers were hit knocked down and then rebuilt! that is how I connected that! makes sense to me? how about you? any comments welcome

Thanks everyone. Which is just our luck, the vet was swamped with emergency visits when the wife got there. And because of the stupid fucking Flu Manchu, you can't even go inside the vet's office anymore. You have to park, call the desk, and they send a tech out to talk to you. So since she had called ahead, they knew she was coming and if it would have been bad enough, I'm sure he would have gone back quickly. But since he recovered and his vitals were good, they had to wait behind the other emergency visits. When they finally were able to look at him, he seemed fine, so they wanted to have him come back tomorrow (now today) for a proper exam. So we have to go back at 3:45 this afternoon. So as of now, we know absolutely nothing more than we did yesterday. The only good thing is that they didn't charge us for anything yesterday.

I guess the episode was that the kid said he was acting a little weird at first, then kinda staggered, and then just tripped over himself and fell over and started really foaming at the mouth. It took a few minutes for him to "come to" and he was acting all disoriented. But the longer it went after the episode, he seemed to come back to his senses.

So, I live on an inside corner of a "T" intersection in a quiet neighborhood. Apparently during the week while I was at work, 11PM some kid came barrelling down the road, blowing stop signs and totally missed the turn at the end. Went up the drive across the street from me, took out the corner of his house, fence, gazebo and hottub before slamming it in reverse backing into the chimney on the side of the house (which collapsed) pulling forward, backing into the house next door (putting a Jeep Cherokee sized hole in that), pulling forward, backing into the street, pulling forward over the curb across my OTHER neighbors lawn and hitting her big planter around a huge maple. Backing out of that he proceeds to limp the car down the road, periodically stopping and stumbling around the car to look at damage before getting back in and continuing back up the road the same way he came from ending in another yard dead into a tree. Apparently walked home from there.

The neighbor who took the bulk of the damage was sitting in his car and witnessed the whole thing, his son even tried to pull the guy out of the car before following him down the street and all the way home. When confronted by the police on his couch wearing the same clothes and bleeding from the nose his answer was "I was carjacked". Apparently the carjackers put $1600 bucks in his pocket and 22 vials of THC in his car too. Kid was 17 years old.

Apparently the carjackers put $1600 bucks in his pocket and 22 vials of THC in his car too. Kid was 17 years old.

Well, we took Thor to the vet yesterday and found out...nothing. The vet doesn't know what's wrong. He doesn't think it's anything terribly serious at this point, but they drew blood to run a full panel and see if there's anything that stands out. What's good is he had blood work done just a few months ago for something else, so if there's a change that's happened, it should be obvious. So all we can do at this point is wait.

An armadillo doesn’t wear that armored shell for nothing! A number of predators, or natural enemies, like to eat armadillos. Chief among them is the coyote. http://aubreyamc.com/canine/saint-bernard/

Epilepsy

There are three types of seizures in dogs: reactive, secondary, and primary. Reactive seizures are caused by the brain’s reaction to a metabolic problem like low blood sugar, organ failure, or a toxin. Secondary seizures are the result of a brain tumor, stroke, or trauma. If no other cause can be found, the disease is called primary, or idiopathic epilepsy. This problem is often an inherited condition, with Saint Bernards commonly afflicted. If your friend is prone to seizures, they will usually begin between six months and three years of age. An initial diagnostic workup may help find the cause. Lifelong medication is usually necessary to help keep seizures under control, with periodic blood testing required to monitor side effects and effectiveness. If your dog has a seizure: Carefully prevent him from injuring himself, but don’t try to control his mouth or tongue. It won’t help him, and he may bite you accidentally! Note the length of the seizure, and call us or an emergency hospital.

"Usually begins", but that usually means that outliers do exist.

Yeah, and from what the vet told is, it could keep it completely under control. So we just have to wait and see how frequent/bad they become and then get back to the vet and get him in for a follow-up visit.

We had a dog that had to take pills twice a day for seizures. If you think it's scary to witness just imagine how confused and scared he is.
The only advice I can give is that if one occurred while we were there we would hold and comfort till it was over. Easy for us since he was only about 18 pounds. A bigger dog cover with favorite blanket if he has one and put any toys close by while stroking. They were usually over in a couple of minutes just keep him comfortable and encourage happy memories to bring him around.

So let's take a drink and never think and here's to the past

It's just another wasted day

And I used to say that I'd never stay

It also updates to allow for transmission tracking. So basically, you are giving your face and your contact points to the government. Funny how crisis brings more government control. 911 gave us the Patriot Act. COVID gives us China-level tracking.

I still don't see how wearing a mask is the problem that folks are mad about though, which is my whole point. They were one patch from tech working at the consumer level with a mask - so we know it already existed.

The China level tracking isn't COVID's gift, it's been there since the Patriot act. Ironically China tried to ban masks in Hong Kong  It's all very backwards. I'm convinced we're being sidetracked to get angry about wearing masks as it's the one tangible thing folks feel they can control.

Look at this bill introduced a few weeks back: https://www.businessinsider.com/mcconnell-patriot-act-renewal-fbi-web-browsing-history-2020-5

Renew the Patriot Act again, search our phones without warrant... Horrific stuff. Wearing masks during a pandemic won't be long term and has been shown to serve the greater good (interesting article here about Austria (https://www.sciencetimes.com/articles/25410/20200421/austria-90-drop-coronavirus-cases-requiring-people-wear-face-masks.htm)). We should be mad about everything else infringing on our privacy but by and large it's the masks we whine about. Why is masks the part where everyone suddenly gets upset, not everything else?

Right, I agree, I was being somewhat rhetorical.

I'm mad about what is happening to our privacy and the grabs being made at it under the guise of COVID. Masks are the one piece I just actually feel strongly is going to be temporary, and probably could do some real good, so I guess I'm a little ranty on the subject.

I can see people not wanting to wear a mask, I really can, but I think there are bigger hills to die on with respect to our liberties and privacy, that don't potentially endanger our neighbors with illness. Anyways

I wore a homemade mask today my wife ordered on Etsy. They're not required, but with my wife working in hospitals I'd say the chance of me being a carrier on any given day is high. Didn't bother me one bit to wear for an hour of errands  On the off chance it stops me from spreading COVID I have no issues with it personally.

From a discussion in another thread showing my PoV on it (because I'm too lazy to type something out right now  ):

You do know that in all probability, there is no way to avoid the virus forever. Odds are that you WILL come in contact with it at some point and that you more than likely will contract it because of its virulence. Masks do nothing to protect you from the virus. Unless you are wearing the good ones (N95 or better) the stupid cloth masks (and even surgical masks) do absolutely nothing. They can't filter out the virus. Can they slow it down? Maybe, but it doesn't stop the virus.

Sure, but this premise that not taking the basic precautions being thrown around out there is ridiculous.. Had this lemming taken some basic precautions and not run around acting like the whole thing is a hoax may have prevented his wife from possibly dying.

I won't wear a mask, period. That doesn't mean I don't take precautions. I wash my hands regularly. I try and be conscious of touching my face when I'm out and can't wash my hands. I stay away from people as much as space allows. I've reduced drastically trips to the stores and whatnot and opt for delivery of most items. I don't think the Wu Flu isn't serious, but it's nowhere as dangerous as the press and certain wannabe tyrants running some states want you to think it is.

We have to ascertain taking risks in this country as citizens every day. The virus is no different. I could just as easily die of a heart attack or get in a horrible car accident or catch some other virus/bacteria that's out there. All this lockdown bullshit is doing now is elongating the time period that we have to deal with this. Nobody is saying that we shouldn't protect the vulnerable (sick and elderly people) but the rest of us need to be able to go back to living our lives. Make our own risk assessments like we've done every single day of our adult lives.

Makes me think about the thing that has always been said about interstellar probes/missions like that. By the time that probe gets to Alpha Centauri, will technology on earth have progressed far enough that we will have built something in the ensuing 100 years that would beat the original probe there?

Good news. they've got the journey down to 44 years

also https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/100-million-for-probes-to-alpha-centauri-yes-really/

nanoprobes" would take only 20 years to get to Alpha Centauri, at least the ones that survive (a dust particle along the way would be fatal). As each zips through the system, a tiny camera and atmosphere analyzer are to grab pictures and data on any planets there. Then — hold on now — it would transmit this data the 4.4 light-years back to Earth using a "compact laser." The total mass of each probe, including power supply, camera, sensors, processors, fine-navigation thrusters, and that amazing transmitter, is to be just a few grams.

The laser array would boost this delicate snowflake of a thing out of Earth orbit with an acceleration of 25,000 gs, delivering the force to a lightsail purely as radiation pressure. It will have to do this without vaporizing the lightsail and the probe, which will have to be incredibly super-reflective. Such intense power is required to push the probe to its cruising speed in just two minutes, before it gets beyond good laser range. The lasers would then take a day to recharge their batteries (from a dedicated power plant), before sending off the next probe, and the next.

Granted, I live in a small town, but you never know when shit's gonna come to your doorstep. Moving most of my stuff out of my house this weekend. Closing on the sale is June 19th but since I'm out of town 4 days a week that leaves me essentially 6 days to pack up, move and get all my affairs in order.

Maybe I will get lucky and a "protest" will come down my street and save me the trouble....
