The two neighbors beside me each have snarly, yappy dogs. You guys have heard the stories.A few months ago the people two yards over got a 'baby' German Shepard, but they have no yard...only a driveway in the back.So they've put a gate between yards and the little 100 pound Shepard comes into the yard next to me and yaps with the other yappy dog.

He is so big that he literally would get up on our fence and we had to replace a board. You recall I painted our entire fence a couple of months ago and replaced boards?

Now the dog is doing it again....He's almost my height on hind legs and the cute factor has worn off.I will only accept so much....they are not my pets and I get tired of seeing the neighbor from two yards over wondering around the other yard with a flashlight and saying - Hey puppy, nice puppy, stop that puppy...and nothing happens.

I may end up in the news & views section if these 3 neighbors don't get their mutts under control.I'm at the glaring stage right now.I mean, who the fuck gets a dog that big full well knowing they don't even have a God damned fence around their back yards??? :x

Let me find a review on the Dell 23 inch U2311h AND Dell 2410...they have a great picture of both side by side.

I won't bore you with the ratio stuff again but it does make a difference to some users. You seem like a 'squarish' sort of guy so you could like the 24's better.

Both would likely have the 1920 x 1080 resolution size but the 24 may manage it better for your needs.

Acer has a 24 inch....gbmid if I remember correctly. The letters after the main model number are important, lots of variations. For example the ghmid could be utter crap compared the one I mentioned.

You don't game so the 'ms' response time is unimportant. You may want to read user reviews as for this one a guy said that the text clarity was a little fuzzy. You can get into calibrating the monitors and may have to...remember that Dells are pretty good out of the box (as I found out). Most other makes are not.

The Samsung 2431BX I tried had purple skies and a yellow cast to white text pages...I calibrated the shite out of it and got it to 'passable'....IMO a user should never have to put up with that sort of crap. The LG 2442P had photo quality colors and contrast, but that looked pretty washed out compared to the normal 'glossy', 'vibrant' color most monitors have.

One more thing - glossy screen and matte screen (or AG coating) is very important. Some matte screens have such a thick anti-glare coating to deflect light sources, the screen itself has what they call 'mosquito noise' or tiny little flecks on it.I've always liked glossy screen monitors because my light source is above me at home and I don't have 1000 watt lights sitting behind me as I type.

Yeah you and me are different types of users. If you don't watch TV or movies on your pc, color accuracy can be a lot looser. You only have to watch one episode of Supernatural where the guys have yellow skin and you'd understand.

Webpage and net colors in general are 'off' and usually a little garish, so the odds are you won't notice a thing even if the gamma level or color ratios are off with the monitor.Maybe for you clarity and sharpness is the big selling point, as you're reading a lot and dealing with text mostly.

You'd be surprised...A monitor that is calibrated with a true 2.2 gamma level and 95% color accuracy actually looks weird and washed out. Those are for photoshop guys that augment photos for a living. The average guy (me, you...everyone) likes to see colors that 'pop' a bit more with a higher contrast ratio.

Most new monitors out of the box have gamma levels and white point ratios that are similar to the sun  so they can pull your eyes after a while, causing headaches etc.You need to find a happy medium in between the properly calibrated and garish whore monitors.Your own eyes are usually the best bet.If your Dad's looks good to you, you should pick one up.

At 159 bones, it's not a horror show if you make a bad call.My price range was 300 and better for the same class of monitor, so my choice became a little more...erm...picky.

I'll hit the road now and find that Dell review after I get home, it will show a good photo of a 23 and 24 side by side.

Ok Lance...

This is a Dell 2311 beside a Dell 2410.As you can see, there is a significant difference. In this case though the 24 inch has a ratio of 16:10, the 2311 has a ratio of 16:9 (more rectangular) In fact, you may want to seek out monitors with the 16:10 ratio (all 3 of them )

same monitors in action...remember that this 24 incher has an old aspect ratio, 16:10.Any size monitors nowadays primarily feature the 16:9 ratio, or a more stretched out viewing space.

That Dell 2410 is the cat's ass and not available anymore. If you're bored try and hit a few retail sites and look for the 16:10 ratio monitors. They're getting quite scarce.

Alrighty, we need some home action shots

Here's my Dell U2311H.It's supposed to be a 'smaller' 23 inch monitor than most, don't ask...

Oh and Lance, maybe adjustments aren't important to you but some monitors nowadays only come with a slight tilt adjustment :| There was one Samsung that the world drooled over, a 23 inch something...awesome picture but the stand had NO adjusting capabilities. You snapped the screen into the stand and there it was...

Not a big deal if you have a desk like mine. The monitor pedestal puts any monitor right at eye level

My Dell has height, tilt and swivel...as well as rotation to portrait mode if that floats your boat.

Connectivity may be important too. Most human beings want a DVI connection. One Samsumg I had only had HDMI and a VGA connection. It came with an HDMI to DVI adaptor :x Another piece of useless cording to do the function.

Welcome to my world....games natively look better and play better on 16:10's, rather than 16:9's....again, the reason is unimportant for you but sure is a pisser for me.

eg A game likes to run at 1680 x 1050 resolution, rather than 1920 x 1080.This is where you can really start noticing a stretched out aspect. You may not have been able to see it in my pictures, but there's nothing corrupt about viewing the forum on a 16:9 monitor.Other than the sentences seem to go on foreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee ver if you're not used to it...........................

One more tip and perhaps the most important my friend.Monitors are manufactured with 3 types of panels within.IPS and TN panels are the most common.

Simply put IPS panels give richer colors, white and black levels.TN panels are cheaper and give faster response times, not so great depth and richness of colors.

TN panels have shitty viewing angles so if your head moves lets say 5 inches to the left or perhaps 2 inches up or down, the screen starts looking corrupted or tinted.

You have selected one of Dell's better IPS panels. You make think - so what? I'll just get a cheap TN panel and save 150 bucks.I can tell you right now that I selected Dell's cheaper ghetto IPS panel version and it's 10 times better than any TN I've used (or taken back )

IPS is the epitome of color accuracy and richness.Any monitor on that site that's an Ultrasharp, is an IPS panel monitor.Again dude, that difference may not matter for you.But if you get a cheap TN panel and slouch down in your chair, 1/3rd of the screen will turn color.Acer uses a lot of TN panels, but don't let that dissuade you. They also make some vibrant, good color monitors.

The Dell I have changes price monthly. Was 300 dollars up here, I waited and got it for 189.An absolute steal.I think Dell has this perfect pixel guarantee thingy which means that if you get a monitor with a dead or stuck pixel, they'll replace it.Other monitor manufacturers have 5 and 8 pixel return policies which means that 5 of them have to be burnt before they entertain a return :| I had a monitor with one stuck pixel, right in the middle. And I noticed that cocksucker every time I turned on the pc

I'm throwing a lot of info at you dude...just keep Ultrasharp in mind if looking at a Dell, or just spend some time in front of your Pa's new Acer...do some posting, checking out pics.Actually if you can, sit in front of it, put up the forum and move your head around a bit.I'm curious about the Acer viewing angles and if the whites burn holes in your retinas  I'd appreciate it

Happy Remembrance day:) .... Every Remembrance Day I think about all the veterans, but especially my grandfather who served in the First Special Service Force. An elite unit of US and Canadians in WWII who were sent in when other forces failed. Their record is one of the greatest in the war, and they're fabled as the only unit never to retreat a single foot of ground. Modern Canadian and US Special forces units are direct descendants of The Force.

Secondly... my grandmother died exactly one year ago today. She was a ridiculous person, so full of life. Loving and caring and silly. The woman is a model for an awesome life.

Lastly... Every Remembrance day for the past 30+ years, our family has gone to the ceremony at the war memorial and then we have a big family reunion. We call it "Donut Day" We have soup and donuts and all the extended family shows up so the cousins can beat each other up and we just get to basically enjoy ourselves. In a cheese-e way, it's a perfect thing to do to respect what the veterans have given us. Just an awesome afternoon.

So yeah... big day.

My Dad (with a little help from me) just got together his Dad's enlistment form, medals, ring, pin and insignia from when my grandfather was in WW1.He put it all together in this nice wood case with red velvet and we have it hanging up downstairs. My gramps enlisted when he was 17 and was 5'6'' tall....I should get a picture of it

I met my grandpa once when I was a tot, he was a different man then..

For sure. One of my uncles has my grandfather's medals, they're great to see.

I remember sitting with my grandfather and listening to war stories... he would only tell the funny ones to us. But I've read extensively on his unit. They did some very dark things and with him being able to speak Italian, he was at the front for all of it. It was amazing that he could do what he did at at my age, and still turn out to be a normal, functioning, great person.

I'm telling you man, I got the perfect solution for the single male.I call it The 8 dollar date :)

one kaiser roll
package of boloney
large jar of Cheez Whiz
3 elastics

You hollow out the kaiser roll to your specifications, roll up boloney and insert into roll leaving the boloney lips hanging out, scoop out a large dollop of Cheez Whiz and wrap it up in the elastics for stability. Then pop her into the microwave for 60 seconds and BAMMO! The perfect date.

I took the day off today from the kitchen project. Woke up this morning, intending to head to the home improvement store to get a few items, had a bad ass crick in my neck from hand sanding the butcher block yesterday (electric sander finally broke) so, kicked back in the recliner, watched racing and college football, then went to my buds house for BBQ dinner and hide and seek with the kids..

Twas a most excellent day.

Minz, you play with hair, right? Well, I got a question...what the heck is this stuff that I tried the other day, this weird powder that you use for doing your hair? Really fine and light powder one either sprinkels straight into hair or on hands and then does the hair. I tried it the last time I went to get my hair cut, but I didn't go for it...it was really strong and it acted a bit too fast for my liking... But it is interesting stuff. Just were wondering if it is better or worse for your hair than waxes and gels that I normally use.

Ok thank you. I just have never seen or used that kind of product before...so Im interested in it. Especially if it is better for hair and scalp than other products. Even tho I only use stuff bought from the salon, cuz they are way way better for the hair and scalp.
