Went to a friend's place for dinner tonight... had a nice evening but holy shit I've never seen such an out of control dog. They have this 2 year old ausie shepherd that is completely nuts. Jumps on the counter to steal food, pisses when company company comes over, barks non-stop when they try and crate him, bites when you bend down to say hello, and chews the drywall when he doesn't get attention. This couple seems to think this is still normal puppy behavior for a two year old dog. I spent the night biting my tongue. Some people shouldn't have pets...

Well that was a fairly shitty weekend. Some time overnight Saturday into Sunday, the freezer door on the freezer in the garage came open. By the time we discovered it on Sunday, it had been open far too long and things were in various stages of thawing/thawed out. so everything was a total loss. I'm guessing somewhere between $700 and $800 worth of food, a total loss. I guess at least it didn't burn the motor out on the freezer being open for as long as it was.

And then last night Thor had another seizure, so didn't get much sleep last night at all.

Going to be a lovely fucking day today.

Dunno, it's old and not level, so probably whoever used it last just didn't get the door closed all the way. Might have had something sticking out just enough to keep the door from closing all the way. It was really windy this weekend too and when it's windy like that, we get some pretty wild pressure changes in the garage. Could have been anything really.

Thinking about getting a baby latch for the door as another level of keeping it closed just in case.

If it was only that, meh, OK. But there are many other things I'm not OK with. Limiting magazines is at the top of the list. A few other suggestions I'd be ok with as well. One of which is reporting juvenile records. Giving kids essentially a clean slate just because they turned 18 is why the Texas kid was able to pass a background check. If they have a history of violence or mental issues, that shouldn't "go away" just because of a birthday.

Played a round of golf this morning before heading home from this work conference. Beautiful course in Kelowna BC, which if you're not familiar, is very different climate from Vancouver, it's basically a desert. Anyways, I was playing with a c-suite guy, probably 50 years old, intimidating serious dude who I was having a bit of a hard time getting to open up.

Well we're driving the cart to the 4th tee, and come around the corner and there's this big fucking rattle snake suntanning on the pavement. This dude SCREAMS like a little girl and jumps halfway into my lap clutching my arm yelling "DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE" :rofl:

I panic a bit from his reaction and gun it around the snake to the left, exposing his side rather than mine to the snake and he's just hollering. We make it around the corner and he's just shivering, said he broke out in a cold sweat. We just start dying laughing after that and he tells me snakes are his phobia (you don't say, guy :lol: ).

That broke the ice for the day and I bought him a beer to chill out... but he was peering around the corners the rest of the round as we drove on the cart path. Too funny. I'll be able to call that back as something to laugh about with him for years to come in our business dealings now which is honestly great.

Today was a bad day at work, and then my phone rang at 4:45 and it was one of my meanest clients... I thought for a second about sending it to VM, but we had a great call about a file, then he thanks me for taking a couple of his branch managers for dinner last week, and I left the office in a great mood. Funny how a 5 minute positive moment to end the day can turn it around.

Debris from the yard and landscaping flew over 100'.

My phone continued to ring all day with tv and internet issues at our rentals. Tally so far: 3 TV's toast, 2 internet modems fried and 4 cable boxes smoked. I managed to get equipment in a dozen more houses to boot back up after a reset. Oh yea, and our elevator at the other location cooked it's batteries somehow.

I'm thinking that I'm going to dedicate one credit card to use at POS at stores and stuff to try and cut down on the potential fraud of losing my debit card info. Seems to be a lot easier to dispute fraud charges with a credit card versus a debit card. The credit union has put holds on the pending funds in both mine and the wife's accounts until the charges clear. Then we have to call them back, dispute the charges again, then they give a 'provisional credit' back to you and forward the fraud report to their fraud department. The rep told me that the credits can be reversed if the fraud department doesn't agree that fraud occurred.

At least with a credit card, there aren't any funds that are held by the bank, just pending charges. And the few times I've had to dispute things with a credit card company, it was actually pretty easy. And then with using a credit card, I can just pay off the charges once a week so a balance doesn't accumulate, since the money would have been coming right out of my bank account anyway if I had been using my debit card.

It sucks because I'm really careful where I use my debit card, I try and insulate myself against using it as much as possible. About the only place I actually use my physical card is at stores that don't take Google Pay. I almost never use it at gas stations since I have 2 special debit cards from 2 stations that insulates against getting my bank info and at the other stations I go to, I use their mobile app to activate the pump and pay right through the app, no physical payment method used at all. I'm just so confused where my info was stolen at.

I've got to write out my frustration at work right now because I need to vent.

One of our underwriting departments at work, the underwriters who handle personal insurance, went from a dedicated model (every brokerage had a dedicated underwriter) to a call center model. That's fine, it's the only way you can truly scale up a business without just hiring more and more people. It makes sense, the stats prove it, we were one of the last companies to do it. No big deal. Some clients bitch and whine because they had good relationships with their underwriter, but most see that call wait times are down, and with our new system launched at the same time, you hardly need to call anymore, you have the power.

Anyways.. it has some hiccups. With the call centre model, we in business development (professional apologizers for the company at times) get a lot more complaints. Our clients aren't always getting the consistency and give-and-take they had with the dedicated contact. Sometimes it's just noise, but sometimes I get complaints where I fully agree we're being too harsh. I worked in underwriting at this company for years so I know when we've made a bad call.

The process for me to get a bad decision re-looked at has now changed about 3 times in 6-months:

- At first, I'd just walk down the hall and chat with the underwriter or supervisor... problem usually solved.
- But oh oh... that's not right. We're apparently escalating too much. Have the clients call the centre back and escalate it that way.
- Oh... complaints still coming back that they don't want to hear.... Next step: We'll use an escalation log with a 4-hour SLA. Fine - ok, I'll fill out the fucking form.
- Next issue a few weeks later: Too many escalations in the log now. Solution: Only escalate issues from the client's management team and above. Alright?... I guess... but that means that any issue has to go to the desk of our client's management first, who then see we're being idiots too, rather than solving it at the front line and giving a problem more visibility.


And then out of the blue I get an email today: They still don't like our escalations. Solution? Now *I* have to escalate to my Director, to escalate to the Underwriting manager on my behalf.

So we've gone from me fixing issues talking directly, to an excel spreadsheet where I explained the story, and finally now to needing to go through 3-4 different people to fix a problem. I.. who have spent far more time working on the front line than my director... need my director's permission to raise a flag that we fucked up.


I try and roll with the punches and be a good student of change management, adapting to the growing pains of a company that wants to grow fast and not always be the little punching bag of the industry... but this is too fucking much. On one hand they're wondering why we're not growing as planned, or why our company has so many "silos"... on the other, the BD team who's supposed to be the most in touch with our clients, can no longer escalate the issues we hear about directly to have them fixed.

It's nuts... I flat out wanted to quit when this email came in today saying we can no longer escalate problems relating to that one department ourselves. Pure and utter insanity, insulting, stupid. Fuck it all. If my portfolio wasn't getting so hammered I might just quit and take some time to reevaluate my career :lol:

I had been buying mostly pre-made stuff at the grocery store to bring to work because, lazy. And it was easier than making food every night and get it ready to bring to work, plus while it did cost more than making my own food, it was still at a price point where I could justify doing it. Well, with the stupid inflation and the skyrocketing prices at the grocery store, I can't justify doing that anymore, it's become ridiculous with most of the stuff I used to buy being up between 50% and 100% over where it used to be. Yesterday, I stopped at the store to get a few more things because I like to have a good variety of stuff because I get bored of eating the same thing over and over. I wanted to pick up some jam/jelly because every now and again, I like a good PB&J sando and the ingredients will last forever when stored right. I gave up on having food at work. It's even more expensive at the island grocery and no matter where I hide my food someone finds it and eats half of it. More often than not I'll hit the little food shack at the "family fun center", They have good food, made to order and he gives island employees a 20% discount. Fresh angus burger and fries is like 10 bucks with tip. And he's got a bunch of snack stuff like soft pretzel bites with cheese for only a few bucks.

I don't have to worry about people eating my food at work at east. I actually bought my own mini fridge to have upstairs in my office. I just can't justify spending the money on pre-made convenience food any more.
