Usually I look forward to long weekends because I don't take a lot of time off, plus they are so few and far between (I only get 6 paid holidays per year, just the major federal holidays). Not this long weekend though. My neighborhood (and really, most of the neighborhoods in the 'burbs) are filled with assholes that feel the need to set off fireworks continuously. Firstly, they are illegal and the fines start at $1,000 for your first offense. Second, it's dry as fuck and you would think these morons would at least the common sense to know you could start a fire. But no, they think it's their "right" to set off fireworks. And we're not talking about firecrackers and sparklers, they are setting off the professional quality shit all night long. You can't even buy this shit in Colorado nor can you order it by mail because they are illegal. These assholes drive to Wyoming and buy them and bring them back across the border.

Two of our dogs are completely terrorized by the fireworks, so this means none of us will get any sleep at all this weekend. We can't leave the windows open and even with closing the house up, it can only muffle the sound so much. It's beyond ridiculous. And the cops do absolutely nothing about it. Sure, they are out on patrol, but unless they witness someone setting them off, they won't do anything. And the assholes setting the fireworks off do them in waves to avoid getting caught by the cops. It takes every fiber of my being to not want to drive around the neighborhood all weekend long and just execute anyone I see setting them off. Every year I just hope that at least one of these assholes blows their fingers/hands off in an accident.

On a separate note, I'm flying to Toronto again tomorrow... just got back from there last week but that's not the part I'm rattled by. Air travel is basically destroyed. I had 5+ hours in delays total for my 4 day round trip last week, security lines wrap around the airports in both cities. Baggage claim at Pearson in Toronto looked like the apocalypse, just thousands of bags all over the place unclaimed, and another thousand people looking for their luggage. I have to go again tomorrow for an unrelated project and already have anxiety, they cancelled today's flight at the same time so who knows how tomorrow will go. And now on a 5 hour flight they only offer you a small glass of soda or water once, and no more snacks. Not to mention the cost of flying domestically has almost doubled this year. It's all just insane.

do they have something like tsa pre-check in canada? i was just in boston and back and feel like we got really lucky with no delays on either end of our trip. regular security line was nuts, but i paid for global entry renewal again this year (best $100 i have ever spent) and it comes with pre-check.

Rogers has been down in Canada all day, they're one of the two major (and in most cases in large parts of the country, the only two available) telecoms providers in the country. Half the country without cell, internet or cable all day. It's impacted POS at most vendors, 911 services, all kinds of shit. Pretty wild. Wasn't able to do much at work today since so many of our services rely on Rogers. I'm guessing some sort of major cyber attack since nobody has come out at Rogers and said the cause even after 14+ hours.

It's just mind blowing. I posted one in the Space thread and it's a cluster of 5 closer galaxies and in the background you can see hundreds more galaxies. And when you think that every one of those galaxies has 100 thousand million stars (according to the ESA site), and that many of those all have planets of some kind. It's just beyond amazing. Makes me almost wish I wasn't born yet and wouldn't be around for at least 100 more years because we just don't have the technology to even really explore our little corner of space yet.

My sister in law had her baby tonight! Tough labor, she's in a very small town so the little hospital sent her home twice over the last 36 hours (with drugs at least) despite being in pain. She went back in when she was dilated, but they couldn't turn baby so they had to do a c-section after all, poor girl :lol:

Not really sure what we are going to do about Thor. Poor guy had another seizure Friday night/Saturday morning (it was just before midnight). He's on a third medication now and has been for about 3 weeks. It was the first seizure since the new meds started, so a little more than 3 weeks since his last seizure, and they were coming every 6 to 7 days prior to that, but still, he had another one while on three different meds and this seizure seemed rather long. The poor guy is out of it for so long after it ends, the other dogs all freak out during it and try and attack him so keeping the other dogs away during the seizures is a chore in and of itself while trying to make sure Thor doesn't hurt himself, it's just not a good thing all the way around.

The wife was in contact with the neurologist yesterday, so we'll see what they say, but if something doesn't change for the better, we may have to think about letting Thor go. His quality of life is the singular most important thing, and this new medication has turned him into a zombie. The neurologist warned us about the side effects, she said it could take up to 8 weeks for it to normalize in his system and for him to get back to his normal self. But it's just so sad to see him like this. We're going to see what the doctor says and see how he progresses on the new medication, but we might be really close to making a very hard decision. :(

Well damn. Went to go rotate the tires on the Challenger. Was going to put new brake pads on the front in an effort to combat the obscene dust from the stock ones. Seems I ordered rear pads instead of front. Oh well. Went ahead and rotated rims/tires, and cleaned the rims while off. Also ceramic coated rims. Added a couple under hood dress up items. Now gonna drink some beer.

After looking at the itemized receipt, they tried to charge me for 8qts of oil at $20/qt. The car only hold 7qts, and average cost of this specific oil is $10/qt. After some back and forth, they decided that the clerk had "input the wrong data" even though the part # for the oil was correct. They got it straightened out and charged me $9/qt for 7qts.

And the only reason I'm taking it to dealership is for warranty purposes. Dodge can be picky on warranty issues.

Maybe they made a mistake, but I honestly think there's a lot of people price gouging way beyond inflation. I think more than ever you need to be a savvy shopping not to be unnecessarily shafted.

Yesterday I swapped all the stock Alpine speakers for some high end Kenwood in the Challenger. Original plan was to later in add a 6 channel amp and a subwoofer. Today I swapped the front brake pads with some that hopefully don't make as much dust. After that it went for a cruise.
I may not add an amp or subwoofer after all. Sounds pretty damned good now.

The bitch actually just wanted to 'exchange info' and go on their way. The wife insisted no, and called the police instead. The worst part was waiting for the cop, that took almost 45 minutes because it was a Saturday night, so they were already busy with normal weekend night issues. When the wife first talked to the stupid bitch, she was trying to claim it wasn't her fault because she "had her blinker on" and somehow that gives her the right of way to pull into oncoming traffic from a side street with a stop sign onto a street with no stop sign? :huh: Then after her husband showed up (and I'm guessing he told her to say this), suddenly her story was that my wife was driving with no headlights. :| The wife's vehicle, if it's on, ALWAYS has the fucking headlights on, day or night, it's automatic. Luckily, the cop knew that because his wife has the same vehicle. We were cut loose pretty quickly, so I don't know what happened to the bitch, but at the minimum I'm guessing that she got a ticket for the accident plus driving without insurance. The cop was still dealing with her when we were leaving. All the cop wanted from us was the wife's license, registration, and proof of insurance. The sheet metal from the fender was REALLY close to the tire, so I was worried that if she tried to drive it and had to make a turn it would cut the tire down. Luckily I was able to pull the fender out enough so she could at least drive it home (the accident happened barely 1/4 mile from our house). But the fender was fucked up enough now that it interferes with the door, so you can't open the driver side door at all. They're supposed to send a tow truck today to take it to the body shop to get the estimate worked up and get the work started. We're not getting multiple estimates because we are just using one of State Farm's preferred body shops.

News on the job front. I didnt get the full amount I asked for, but I got with in a dollar per hour, so, not too bad. I really didn't expect to get the full amount.

On the foreman position, we've agreed for me to be acting foreman for 2-3 months, or until we can either agree on terms, or they can hire someone else. During the 2-3 months, I have to be out here constantly with only every other weekend off. Thats the normal schedule for the position.
If in fact I become foreman, my base pay would go up about 20k a year, but I'd effectively double my income due to the overtime and working 52 weeks/yr opposed to 26 weeks/yr now.

As far as the possible "promotion", that's a tough call. It's a lot more time away from family.... Personally if I was earning a comfortable income already I'd definitely be leaning toward turning down the promotion. Unless.... I had a solid "exit" plan in place. As in, work my tail off for 3,4,5 years and plan on getting out at that point with all the extra cash squirrelled away for future plans or invested.

It wouldn't really take away time from family. Wife would come for 1-2 weeks a month. Kids are grown and out on their own. It would take away the casual lunch, dinner, etc with my mom or the kids, but they could come here too for visits.

As far as the actual hours per year worked,

Right now, I average about 90hrs/week for 26 weeks a year so 2300 or so/ year. With the formans job, I expect that to average about 65-70 hrs a week for 52 weeks (not counting vaca or pto) so 3300- 3600hrs/yr. That increase in hours is where the doubling of income comes in.

And the game plan would definitely to be for no more than 5 years, banking at least 45% of income. I'd probably be able to retire at 60 instead 65.

The difference being he was the President of the United States of America and had the power and privilege to declassify those at will. Clinton was not President and did not have that power and privilege. The FBI didn't send 50 armed agents to her house in a raid. And they let her go through the documents first without oversight to remove any "personal documents" from the batch.

The FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago, as of right now, the warrant is sealed and Trump's lawyers were not given a copy, nor were allowed to be present for the search, meaning the FBI could plant anything they wanted, and no one would be the wiser. No one knows what's in that warrant, except Merritt Garland and the FBI (and probably Biden and the Democrats in Congress).

There's a couple of other things that are going on today with our federal government that I'm not happy about, including the White House touting 0% inflation, when it's clearly more. Raising our taxes, when they ran on the platform of taxing the rich. Green new deal horseshit. ATF trying to redefine a whole mess of junk to make it easier to take our firearms away from us. The Dems in Congress trying to pass that assault weapons ban.

'Satanic Verses' earned him a death sentence fatwa from the Iranians because they said it was blasphemous and insulted Islam and Muhammad. It's been in place for decades. I read a couple reviews of his top rated books today and it sounds like #1 is probably Haroun and the Sea of Stories (at least if you look at rankings on Goodreads and Amazon). Sounds like an interesting read, I'm going to add it to my list. Oddly enough I distinctly remember my mom telling me all about him as a kid and being fascinated that a book could generate death threats, but otherwise totally forgot about him until today.

OK, so last week one of our guys at work called in sick, said "every cell in his body hurt". Was mentioned that he should probably get a covid test. He refused, saying he thought it was food poisoning. OK, fine. he was back at work the next day and seemed OK.

Two days later one of our foreign girls came down sick, they got her a test, first day negative, next two days positive. Everyone is freaking out because they all live and work closely together. (30+ kids). We immediately found other accommodations for her where she's not exposing everyone else any further.

Once again the first guy was asked to take a test just to be sure, apparently he had a full out temper tantrum, threw his coffee and walked out yelling about how "this is BS". He didn't show up today.

I get that he "doesn't believe" in covid, but IMO he's way overreacting. It's not like were asking him to get the vaccine or anything, just a simple test to make sure he's not spreading it to the rest of the staff (and all our guests).

Personally I'd prefer he stay home for the rest of the week either way. Between being a smoker of 35 years, in body shops with dust and chemicals for 25, a bit overweight and right now my immune system is gearing up toward 100% to fight off ragweed that I'm severely allergic too, I don't care if it's a cold, the flu or covid, I simply can not get sick right now. I would have bronchitis within days and probably pneumonia by the end of the week.
I've half a mind to just stay home unpaid until I'm confident that no one is spreading it around.

I've never had an issue testing for any sickness. I'm with you Pony. Missing unscheduled days of work would mess up my plans. Not even talking about those in your situation who already have existing issues.
My best bud ever has lung issues. Sometimes severely so. We haven't spent time together in almost 2 years.
This is because he's worried about covid, and I'm honestly not. Ive had it, have the antibodies, but I respect his concerns

Wife and I booked out flights to Italy in the fall tonight! I'm so stoked.

Not sure if I mentioned this but I absolutely lucked out and was selected as one of three people in the company being sent to a young leadership conference within our industry in Rome the last week of October. It'll be an intense four day conference, and after that my wife is flying out to join me for two weeks of vacation. We have nothing planned except the flights so far. Since it's going to be early November it won't be warm even in the south, so I think we'll save a trip down to the Mediterranean for another time, and instead head north. Maybe drive to Venice and then The Dolomites for a few days of hiking and adventure, then over to Milan, Florence and back to Rome to fly home. It's a lot to pack in so we have lots of planning to do but I'm beyond excited.

My dad's side has family in Pordenone who we could visit on the way to The Dolomites but we'll see, I don't know them at all so I don't want to impose or anything.
