Filled out my ballot today. Usually, especially in the midterms, I take the time to research each candidate to make sure I'm voting for the candidate that aligns with my beliefs the most (especially on state politicians), be it republican or democrat. Not this year, I'm casting a straight (R) ballot.

Not sure how much of a difference it will make, Colorado has become pretty solidly blue, but here's hoping that enough people are sick of it that it will make a difference this year. Crime is rampant here now (Colorado is #1 in all the nation for auto thefts and metro Denver is #1 in package thefts in the whole country) and the homelessness problem is out of control. Colorado needs change and soon before we become a failed state like California.

You should see the truck he hit. Traffic was stopped on the highway because of a prior accident. Don't know how fast he was going at the time of impact but the speed limit on that stretch of highway is 70mph.

So, I've been little preoccupied of late. After Dad's service I went straight up to our Bush property. Today is my first day of respite. In a nice hotel in town with hot shower :) the weather here has been wet cold and raining and I just needed a break. I also have to start (real) work and need a proper internet connection.

With dad being out of action for the last 6 months and pretty slow for the last year there was a bit to do up there. The property was really his baby and I kind of stayed out-of-the-way but since, no offence the rest of my family is a little practically useless :lol: it'll be up to me to pass through once or twice a year to tidy things up. Mainly The entrance road and make sure the hut isn't falling to bits.

I couldn't get the Jonsereds going, so I went out and bought a tiny cheapa-ching chainsaw.just to clear way some of the brush. But it's so flimsy and rattly, the first chain kept loosening and broke. Finally figured out a method to keep the second chain on, but buyers regret big time. Aside from being light there is nothing graceful about it.

And since I need a long bar chainsaw to saw the big logs for firewood... I had another go with the big red. I'm definitely not a farm boy nor a natural but I'll try anything once, so I downloaded the manual, cleaned out the carburettor, put in a new spark plug and refilled with fresh octane petrol and high quality synthetic oil. And low and behold she roared into life this morning! I'll put up a proper pic when I've cleaned her.up (and hands aren't covered with petrol and oil).

Final job is to secure the chimney. Few rocks fell inside which has made bit of a mess. My goal is actually just preservation. The inheritance split three ways with my younger brother and sister and they definitely better be involved. But I'll give them a few years to warm up to it. Sister is only 20, brother 32. I'll be happy to restore the cabin, seal things up and try and make it habitable at least half of the year, but if they're not interested I'll suggest that we pass it onto another family.

That's what I'll do. I have an SDD as the primary and an HDD as the secondary but the price on solid states seems to have come way down so I just ordered a 1TB SDD to replace the old HDD on black Friday for $100. Not bad at all.

In my opinion, if you have only one book on a particular topic that you're "supposed to know" in your area of expertise, then you could be missing out on something that another author might cover, or another author could cover better, if it's information you learned in another author's book. I've got a pretty big personal library. I like to have at least three books on the various topics that I'm "supposed to know" as a mathematician. On stuff I really enjoy, I tend to have more. I have six Differential Equations books, and believe it or not, they're not all the same (differential equations is a pretty active area of research), whereas I have three Calculus books, and they pretty much say the same thing between all three of them (Calculus hasn't changed in over 200 years), although they present things differently in their layouts. I also have Physics books, various types of engineering books, and a bunch of computer programming books, mostly in the C family of languages (C, C++, C#), although I do dabble in Python and R as well.

Believe it or not, I have a bunch of investing/trading books, except they all seem to say the same thing, if they're any good.

Crud, just found out how bad my cholesterol is today :lol: Shouldn't be a surprise since it runs in the family, but last time I had bloodwork my GP said "you're too young to worry, I'll only call you if it's really bad."

Well it turns out her definition of really bad was clearly generous. After a few years of pestering to get my labs for my wife to read herself, she finally convinced me to get it re-checked and it is indeed terrible... my LCL is 6.3 (Canadian measurement is different from the US but it's bad, anything over 1.99 is concerning) :lol: Starting on statins right now and got a referral to a really good specialist, but wish I had 5 years ago. Most of my cousins and family on my dad's side are in the same boat and their levels really improved on drugs so I'm not too worried, but it does suck to get that news when I eat well and exercise and generally try to be fairly healthy.

Here's my test results from just a couple of weeks ago. The wife was always worried that mine would be awful because I really don't eat a terribly healthy diet :lol: I'm pretty happy with my results all things considered. A couple of readings slightly above optimal levels, but other than that, pretty normal.

I was with a doctor for 10 years and she pulled up stakes and moved to Florida, then I went over to another doctor that my pharmacist suggested, but he wasn't taking new patients, so I got lumped in with one of his partners. That partner left, and I was assigned to a different partner, but she left before my first appointment with her, so I got lumped in with another partner, my current doctor.

Okay, maybe I'm just old school and am not used to all these other designations for PCP's. My current doctor that is leaving was an MD and that was one of the reasons I chose him way back when and I got lucky and really liked him. Now I'm looking through the list and there are MD's and DO's and NP's and PA's....does it really matter if your PCP isn't an actual MD? :wha:

DO's around here usually head up a walk-in clinic/immediate care/urgent care. They're fully trained and got their credentials from an Osteopathic medical school. While it's not a traditional medical school, the doctor is still getting a top quality education.

PA's can be good or bad, it depends on the PA. I've seen PA's that I liked and disliked. I'll agree to see a PA if it's absolutely impossible to get in with my doctor, but if the PA gets it wrong, my doctor's going to hear about it.

I've had bad luck with NPs, although a few people in my family sees NPs religiously and swears by them. YMMV, I guess.

So I'm down in rural SC at my Aunts for the winter, a couple of years ago we finally had an option for a different ISP when Tmobile started their "home internet" push. We went from paying $60+ a month for ATT DSL that we were lucky to get 2-3mb down on a good day to With Tmobile at $50 a month we were getting 5-12mb down. It was a huge improvement!

Here we are a couple years later and the first generation "gateway" they sent has been acting up and needing rebooted 5 times a day. This is a 4G LTE device that's very particular on location placement to pick up a good cell signal and very short range wifi. The best place for a strong (two bars) signal with it was on the great room table in full sun (not recommended) and that location wasn't great for wifi at the far end of the house where the kitchen TV/Roku are.

Fast forward to this trip... I called Tmobile, the overseas "expert" wouldn't verify my account and said go to the store. Spent 2 hours in the store trying to get a router exchange done in the hopes that a newer model will be better all around. No go on the upgrade, no go on creating a second account as there are "no more slots available" on our tower. I didn't want to take the risk of cancelling our current spot in the hopes that we could snatch it back up immediately because if we lost it we have ZERO other options for (affordable) internet. So ended up just verifying my account, got a new PIN set and drove back home. Phoned them again and convinced them to do a "warranty exchange" to a new-ish device. (second generation, they are on #4 now)

24 hours later the new device shows up, it's a 5G capable WIFI6 router. I swap the SIM and am back up and running.....except the Wifi camera doesn't work. It needs wifi to change wifi and wouldn't recognize the new device. Took me 4 HOURS to get the router configured and the camera reset into a configuration that both liked. :banghead:

So, the results: After 24hrs so far the new hardware works ok in a central location that's not in the sun (the tower is located on the sunny side of the house) I have a consistent "fair" signal (Had a "good" signal in the old location, but that was in the sun and this router is notorious for running hot), have great wifi coverage throughout the house AND our speeds so far have gone from 5-12mb up to a blazing fast 40-60mb!!!

Tmobile isn't the strongest signal here, ATT and Verizon are better. But like I said above apparently a "fair" signal is enough for the speeds we're getting. And not sure if they still offer the unlimited plan I'm on, I guess it depends on your tower traffic.

I assume a signal booster on your house isn't enough if you would need a 40 foot tower. I wonder if you could DIY a tower with a booster....

They got rid of Batgirl because it was woke trash and they knew nobody would watch it. They got rid of WW3 because the previous 2 films just weren't very good, especially the second one. They're not making money or getting the accolades that the MCU is getting. They're cleaning house and rebooting in an effort to become better and compete. Personally, I think Cavill's good, they just need to get better material for him to work with. So they should keep Cavill at the very least. The powers that be at DC are allowing Robert Pattinson's Batman and Joaquin Phoenix's Joker movies to continue, but they're not going to be official parts of the DCEU. The DCEU should try to get closer to the feel of Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, but with Gunn running the show, it ain't gonna happen.

It's like he can't write a serious film, and frankly some people might not be able to take his brand of humor. I don't think he's capable of a Winter Soldier type of film.

If you take the comics/cartoon out of it and look at it through the lens of an adult, then the Joker is a seriously dark character. Doing a serious character study on him would just lead you to Joker the film, or worse.

The Batman film was good, and people looking to write Neo-Noir should take notes from it.

Those dark films made a lot of money, so naturally, Warner Brothers and DC Studios are gonna ride that train, but they don't want that level of darkness permeating throughout the DCEU. They want to be able to show their films to kids too (and again, I think Gunn's a bad fit for that), and you don't want to damage the kids in the process with that level of darkness. Joker is fucking dark, so let's get another Joker that's a lot lighter but still a pain in the ass for our heroes to contend with.

This year was 6 trips to Toronto, plus the 3-week trip to Rome (partly for work), and Montreal and Austin for fun. Certainly not complaining about the fun trips, but the constant trips to Toronto are draining for sure. It's a 5 hour flight, the flights are constantly delayed and there's an hour commute on either side so it's an 8-9 hour travel day each way. Then you're staying in 3.5 star hotels, and away from the dog and wife for the week eating crappy food and not having much to do in the evening when work is done which is lonely. If the expectation next year is 10-14 trips to Toronto I might have to start looking for a different job.

I agree with all of that. Warner and DC are yet to consistently nail the normal mainstream hero movie like mcu (mostly) does. Mcu got the formula right early and therefore has the advantage that they can keep doing the same thing. Which perhaps forces DC to be more experimental. Some flop and some are ok.

All of those types of medication contain pseudoephedrine which is one of the ingredients used in meth and thanks to all the meth addicts, they keep this stuff behind the counter and you can only buy so much at any one time. You need to present your drivers license at the pharmacy and you have to sign for it and made to feel like a criminal for wanting to buy it. The allergy meds I buy contain it (usually differentiated with a "D" in the product name, like either plain Claritin (which you can just buy) or Claritin D (which contains the pseudoephedrine and is behind the pharmacy counter)) and every time I need more I feel like I'm being judged like I'm going to make meth or something. Meds with pseudo in them aren't fully controlled substances in the US, but they are partially controlled.

Once I get the PR/PO I then have to forward that to vendor, and depending on lead time for deliver, keep track of it for weeks to months.
Thats a lot of stuff clogging up my email (outlook) and our wonderful IT dept won't allow me to create folders to move the email chains to.

Is there a good software program y'all use to track this type of stuff without getting into SAP type stuff. I'm looking for software i can purchase and install on laptop

Roads are in awful shape, not much better than a logging trail in places. The road to the shop isn't even plowed yet. If I didn't have a 4WD truck, I wouldn't have made it. Even saw a plow sideways on the interstate on the way to work. It's a mess.

Well, the republicans finally got their shit together and voted McCarthy as Speaker. But one thing during all of this made me think...you know you always hear that the Speaker of the House doesn't technically need to be someone that is serving in the House. Okay, say someone out of left field were to be nominated and actually win the Speakership. That position is third in line of succession to the presidency. So I would assume that anybody ineligible to be President couldn't be Speaker? Or what happens if this person from left field is voted into the Speakership, could someone actually not currently serving in government become President like that? I would think that would be a huge can of worms.

That only discusses people that aren't Constitutionally eligible to be POTUS (i.e. foreign born persons). What if the person that was voted in as Speaker was Constitutionally eligible to be President (met all of the conditions set forth in Article II) but came from outside of politics?

For example, as a bit of a far fetched idea, what if all the republicans had gotten together and voted Dwayne Johnson as Speaker of the House? He meets the age requirements and the citizenship requirements, but other than winning the vote to become Speaker, he hasn't been voted into any office by the people nor was he a Presidential appointee to any position.

Me and the wife are trying to start doing more volunteer work with animal rescues this year. Last weekend we helped out at the fundraiser for the Saint Bernard rescue and this weekend we are going to pick up a Great Dane that's stuck in a shelter in Colorado Springs and we're going to be the fosters for him. Most of the rescue groups are strapped for money and volunteers and foster homes for all these poor dogs and we want to try and help out. So tomorrow morning we'll be making the 90 minute drive to Colorado Springs to pick him up from the shelter. If he's a good fit, we have the option of adopting him, but at the very least, we'll be the foster home for him until he finds a forever home, whether it's with us or with another family.
