Back from 6 days in Ontario for work... four full days of conference from breakfast until late night dinners (too much boozing), then a morning of meetings and flight home today. I'm bagged, was so nice to come home to my pup and wife. Hope you all had a great week.

Ya eh? They're a lot, drains my social battery big time. The first couple times I traveled for work I thought it was so cool (and I guess it was, feeling your career is rising to the point where someone wants to pay the expense for you to be somewhere :lol: ) but totally agree, now it's not romantic at all. I did recently get lounge access at the airport though, and so at least for the time being that's novel :lol:

I uninstalled Fedora KDE because KDE Plasma, while it looks nice, is way too resource intensive. I tried MX Linux, which is supposedly real popular, but the distro didn't like me a whole bunch (I'm still trying to figure out how the hell it started OCing my hardware... I know I didn't do it), so I grabbed Fedora XFCE and installed that instead. I'll be playing with this one for a little while, and with Manjaro, which I have on another hard drive. I booted into Windows yesterday, and it took 5 hours to update it and get it settled down to a usable state. Yeah, I think I'm done with Windows, on this machine at the very least. I just have to grab files off of the drive. It's still on the laptop, and that's fine. But I think I'm gonna start looking for hardware for a new build. I already have SSDs picked out. I'll have to see the lay of the land where processors and motherboards are concerned. And RAM for that matter. I'm probably not going to be able to go much faster than what I have now, so I'm probably going to have to go by resource usage/efficiency and cost.

I've had my W-2 since the first week of January. We're STILL waiting for the county (where the wife works) to send out their W-2's so we can get our taxes filed. Everything is all done electronically now, there is absolutely no reason for W-2's to be delayed. I don't understand the employers that wait until the very last day allowed (January 31st), to mail out their W-2's to employees. She works for the government and here I work for a small business with barely 10 employees and we've had our stuff weeks ago.

Insurance totaled my car last week after a stupid fender bender, I went and looked at a Bolt, it was fuckin wack as fuck. And they are charging 3k over sticker because they can't keep them on the lot. So they were coming out to like 40k and not even close to as nice as the Volt I currently had. Went to the Ford dealer to look at the e mustang, They want 10k over sticker so about 70k :facepalm:
Tesla on the other hand reduced their prices, so I ordered a Tesla for 46k, unfortunately the delivery date just say between Feb and March

I finally have all of the programming environments installed under Manjaro. Fedora wasn't that big of a pain in the ass where that was concerned, but Fedora still has a problem with my gpu drivers. Manjaro is smooth sailing on that point. Fedora is used by businesses and I really don't think anybody's using Arch derivatives in business. I'm still thinking I should give Debian a whirl since there's so many distributions that use it as their base. I could always reinstall Fedora later.

I swear, I've never had any luck with Debian. The installer hates my wifi network, so I can't do the net install thing. Funny, it had no problem with my video card, which every other freakin' distribution cries about. But at least I can get those other distributions installed no problem without the Nvidia drivers, and force them to install when everything is up and running. However, without the wifi, I'm dead in the water. Debian needs to update their networking installers something fierce. Even Debian derivatives like Ubuntu and Mint can recognize the wifi and accept it's credentials and passkey. But noooooooooooo, not Debian. No wonder why the creator of the distro hung himself.

My new boss just doesn't interact with me at all... this is so, so weird, I've never dealt with this in my career. He's very senior, technically two rungs above me, but I report direct to him because my new role is part of a new strategy so it should be good for my career to have him as my leader. But I've talked to him maybe twice this year? My last few bosses I'd chat with daily at least over IM and had scheduled weekly 1-on-1's, but this guy has no interest in that. I have to schedule chats with him through his executive assistant.

Today I delivered the biggest presentation of my career, to our biggest client. A month of planning, had our COO and CEO present, three guest speakers, gifts and the full red carpet treatment. Got some great feedback and congrats from everyone who attended.... except my own boss. I asked him for any final feedback on the presentation a week beforehand and he just never replied. He was on the presentation itself, and the internal debrief after, but didn't say a word to me, despite the CEO and COO giving me a pat on the back, other VP's texting me, asking questions, etc.

I don't need any positive reinforcement, I'd be fine if he said "hey you said this, how do you plan to follow up" or really any type of interaction... but nothing. Radio silence. This is... bizarre. I'm fine with being left alone but at some point this guy does my performance reviews and I'm not sure how that'll go since he seems to forget (or maybe resent) that I report to him :lol: I'm confused.

I think we're up to 11 holidays a year here which is awesome. We've done quite a bit of studying around productivity and found one day off in any given week as no impact provided people are aware the closure is coming up a couple weeks out. We've started just closing a few random Fridays during the summer because it's a huge retention/talent perk working here and the war on talent is very real, little stuff like a couple extra days off makes a difference. I'm hoping we just lean in and go 4 day/32 hour work weeks since all the stats prove we can do it. HR is on board, it's just a few stubborn execs holding out. Our VP of HR told me we just need more employees to keep asking for it to get it over the line. A few essential services need to be staffed but that's easily managed by having half of those teams take a different day off.

Ya agreed there. Saw a guy who retired young from that game talking about it. Someone asked him why he doesn't still day trade. He basically said you'd be fucking crazy to do it from home. The guys who do it right have $30K/month subscriptions to bloomberg terminals and real time info, and are trading live on the floor in the NYSE where they can feel the market moving live, they're armed with real actionable intel.... The rest of us sitting at home on our computers watching BNN and reading Motely Fool just do not :lol:

The official holiday is Presidents day here in the states. I didnt know it was a Canadian holiday as well. Learn something new all the time.
Just to be clear, I'm not off.
The way my schedule works is as follows: I work 14 days, then I'm off 14 days (though two of the off days are travel days) if a holiday falls when I'm on shift, I dont get off, but I do get an extra 8hrs of straight time pay ( not overtime) I get paid time and a half for any work after 40hrs in a pay period (every 7 days) so my typical pay period is 40 hrs regular, and 44hrs overtime ( i average 12hrs/day usually, though lately its been 15hrs/day)

Ok, there are 5 transactional records on my account in 2022 on Coinbase that are listed as unknown and they are asking me to provide additional details. The received crypto is crypto that I'm holding, but Coinbase doesn't know where it's coming from. It's quite minute. It just so happens that when I look under the individual asset's dated records in question, I see that the "unknown transaction" is a staking reward. So the transaction came from Coinbase themselves.

I hate dealing with morons.

And if I make money on that transaction, say I get the $3 and it rises in value by .03 before I convert it, then technically, that's a capital gain. If I lose value by .03, then I've taken a loss on that transaction. That could go towards tax-loss harvesting. On top of all of that, I'm holding staked crypto, and every time I get a pay out, that's considered income. Now granted, I'm not getting it in cash, it's just going back into the asset. None of this junk is any where close to being over $600 to begin with, at which point it would be absolutely necessary to report it by federal law. I'm pretty sure that's right, but I'm gonna pay FreeTaxUSA for a consultation to make absolutely sure of it.

They finally dropped the last mask mandate here in my province, which applied only to hospitals. I had a look at the local subreddit and it's hilarious how pissed some people are. Awfully ironic for the same folks who stood on their balconies and clapped for healthcare workers every night just a year ago. Do they have any idea how fucking taxing it is on a person to come home from a 24 hour shift after having to wear a mask even if they're at a desk or hallways nowhere near a patient, walking 20,000 steps a day, coming home dehydrated, sore ears, bruised nose, face full of zits and not seeing their coworkers smile for three fucking years? If you want to wear a mask fine, hell if you want your doctor to for your exam they absolutely will. Doctors wore masks before the pandemic when it made sense in surgery or around patients on droplet protocols anyways, but expecting healthcare workers to be robots who comply with this rule full time, indefinitely because you're afraid of a cold you're vaccinated for... all while you can go to a nightclub packed to the gills is just laughable... I don't even know why I read the comments on reddit, bunch of terrified Karens :lol:

I was doing a little of that last week. New PC, Printer and timeclock with software. The biggest issue is that A: She kept needing to use the PC I was replacing. and B: My phone kept ringing pulling me away.

Still have to figure out why I cant wifi connect to the time clock. Think I may need to open a port on the router (which I don't have the password for) and is in nearly continuous use.

Had issues with getting the time clock connected to the new PC here as well. But my issue is that the time clock is so old, it uses a USB emulator to connect and I had all kinds of problems getting it to work. Luckily the people at the company that made the clock and the software were able to help me get it done.

Also switching email server providers this morning just because I don't have enough headaches today.

Well, I pushed the button to reset the router to factory because I didn't know the admin login. Basically disconnected everything in the office, then realized logging into 192.168.0.1 was throwing an error message and would not let me login to the router because of a "public" connection.

Took me an hour to figure that out just to get the wifi back up. Turns out it's showing the clock as ok in the router but the software still cannot connect. Fiddled with settings for another hour, confirmed everything is exactly as it should be before just saying fuckit and running a temporary ethernet cable from the timeclock to the router.
Still had to configure the IP and settings in the software to make that work.

BTW, stick with that old time clock as long as you can. 99% of the ones out there all have some fancy features, phone apps, etc but are almost all monthly subscription based, for 100 users it can run hundreds a month. We finally found one with no contracts but it was $400 bucks PLUS another $150 to upgrade to 100 users. AND has none of the fancy stuff. ONE PC, One admin, etc. Just a basic thumbprint clock.

So in the last week and a half, I've replaced two PC's and got all the programs and data transferred over to them, upgraded the shop software we use from PC based to cloud based (of course now we have to pay a monthly sub for that now :meh: ), changed the company and upgraded all the email servers we use, and dicked around for days getting our ancient time clock to work with the upgraded PC.

A bit of both tbh. I went with the new (not rebuilt) one from the auto parts store. Its marketed as oem. When I opened the box, it has the same stickers (AC Delco/Denzo) as original, so I guess it is oem. Last time I bought an alternator, it was less than $100. That was quite a few years ago though.

Actually I don't mind it. I get out of my chair and bounce around a bit, exercise, do stretches, ask for extra coffee down the back, brush my teeth etc.
