Man I have never seen as many gambling ads on tv as I have in the last 12 months, mostly sports gambling but not entirely... During hockey games is the absolute worst. Not sure how it is in the US but it never used to be like this up here. Even podcasts seem to be more about gambling than the sport itself these day.

Maybe I'll sound like a tight-ass but I don't think this is a great idea... didn't we already have enough vices and problems withpit shoving gambling down the throats of every adult and child watching and listening to sports? I'm fine with it being legal but just like cigarettes I don't think they should advertise on tv.

Had a major client drop by the office today, he was visiting from out of town and had been doing lots of business with us so I invited him to see our office then go grab lunch.

Dude is a crusty old hot shot in the industry, I'm guessing he makes high six-figures a year. Shows up in board shorts and a Tommy Bahama shirt with big Oakley sunglasses, bald with a big goatee, completely looks like a Hell's Angel. Not what I was expecting from a high powered insurance broker, for starters. But he's also carrying a huge cardboard box and hands it straight over to me, and it's full of baked goods, all individually wrapped and on little disposable plates. I go "oh, did you guys have leftovers from a breakfast catered this morning or something?" He goes nope - I baked it for your whole office. How many work here? I hope it's enough.

At first I laughed and thought he was pulling me leg, but his son, who works for him tagged along, goes "no he's serious, he bakes every day." This big burly dude proceeds to tell me he has a $1000 fridge in his truck (which he doesn't drive - I'll get to that) so he can drop off baking to all his markets and clients. He bakes fancy cheeses cake, mini banana bread, beautiful cookies :lol: Apparently has a freezer full of his home baking at home. Our entire office was over the moon.

Also learned the dude has accomplished all that he has in his career, owning and selling his brokerage to a larger firm and sticking on to manage a huge book of business, all while being legally blind. He can get around fine without a guide, but can't read or drive. His favorite hobby besides baking is SKY DIVING which he does with his son who's a licensed sky diver. Icing on the cake is he uses a 12 year old flip phone with no email on it.

I aspire to give as few fucks as him :lol: Made my entire week meeting the guy. You seriously can't make up people like this. 'Dont judge a book' kind of thing to the nth degree.

Over the last two weekends, got several new things planted. Last weekend we got a new tree planted and I'm really excited about this one. Got a good deal on it at the Depot and really looking forward to the foliage color this fall. Only thing that has me a little worried about it is that we have had all this rain since we planted it and I just don't want it to 'drown' before it gets a chance to establish its roots. Also got a hydrangea bush planted the same day we got the tree in the ground. It looks pretty good still considering all the rain. Then this past weekend, we got four new rose bushes planted. Trying to really work on fixing things up a bit yard-wise, but it's been an uphill battle the whole 10+ years we've been in this house.

The board isn't hidden and we get a ton of 'guests' that check it out, but it's very rare that new people actually sign up and join in. We've also lost a lot of the original members that came over from AS when we first started this forum more than a decade ago. Some just completely disappeared without saying bye, and those are the ones that really make me wonder if they are okay or if something happened to them, others have left because of, IMHO, dumb reasons that make no sense, and there are others that pop in maybe once or twice a year at best.

If I knew how to "fix" it, I would, but I am at a loss as what to do to get new people to join or get others to come back. I've been in contact with some of those people and they have said they would come back, but they never have. Like Lost said, I think people would love it if they just gave it a shot, but really not sure how to make that happen.

It seems the independent military group Russia has been using to fight in Ukraine was shelled by Russian forces, their CEO called for his group to march on Moscow.

Seems fairly limited right now after watching twitter on and off the last few hours, but there are unconfirmed reports the private military group Wagner has taken control of Rostov and possible Voronezh, and is threatening to head for Moscow. Some very sketchy reports even suggest some Russian Army regulars have switched side, but take that with a grain of salt right now.

Really dangerous for the world, as much as I'd love to see Putin go down, who's to say anything would be an improvement. The head of Wagner, Prigozhin, is nutso too.

Took a rock off my windshield yesterday and it was pretty bad (the top crack was already existing). It sounded bad, but I didn't really look how bad until I looked at it this morning, and yesterday it was just the impact spot, this morning it had evolved into a crack too. Sounded like a gunshot and I never saw it coming. Came out from under a semi that was in front of me on the interstate. The semi must have kicked it up and shot it at me like a gun. Scared the fuck out of me. That was already the 2nd new windshield I have had on this truck, so now it's time for number 3, making 4 total if you count the one it came with.

I find that number to be EXTREMELY low. Estimates say there are between 100 and 400 billion stars in the Milky Way and to say that there are less than 4,000 solar systems out of all those stars seems beyond low.

That sucks, fraud is such a problem right now it's ridiculous. Last year my debit card got compromised 3 times in less than 2 months. After the last time it made me stop using it anywhere at all. I switched to only using credit cards because it's much easier to challenge the charges on a card rather than a debit card/bank account.

Wildfire is consuming the westbank of town across the lake from the main city, and in the last 50 minutes there are photos and reports of the fire jumping the lake and quickly growing to 10 hectares just north of the main city (of about 130K). Really scary shit, it's been almost 40 degrees c (104f) and windy, it's a tinderbox. We worked so hard on it for a month flat out, coordinated with every department of the company to bring it together and made it to the in-person round of the pitch this week. I truly thought we'd put together the winning bid. We attacked it from every direction, had a great proposition for the client from marketing to pricing, threw in all sorts of other creative value-adds.

Got the call today at the airport on the way home that they have two issues with us as a company that we just can't solve for easily, being a smaller market - we offered solutions that would work for both those items, but other markets have the edge which just make them slightly easier to work with.

Winning this thing would've saved our results for the year, guaranteed a bonus for everyone in the company, and selfishly would've made me look like a hero being the relationship manager. They're still considering letting us join the winning market for a chunk of the bid, but it feels like kissing your cousin just getting a half assed tie. Meeting internally tomorrow to decide if we accept that or stand firm so I won't sleep tonight trying to decide my recommendation.

Definitely the biggest disappointment of my career. Really thought we had done our very best and are still going to come up just short. Fuck. What an incredible bummer. I need a vacation.

I was actually still in pretty decent shape pre Covid. When the world stopped for a year and I just sat around on days off that got me out of shape. Still trying to get it back.

Came here to post that not much new in my life. Another days off where it didn't seem like I got much done but after Losts post, I'm happy to say I got to spend some time with the wife, both daughters, and mom.

I picked up $180 direct flight from JFK, couldn't resist...
For comparison, a direct flight from Dulles Washington is about $2,500.

Needed some new wireless headphones for the wife so she can watch TV in bed and not disturb me while I'm sleeping since the ones we have are old and not working well any more. I was gonna buy them this past weekend, but I thought maybe that I should wait since Prime Days were coming up, so I put a couple in the cart and just left them there to see if the price would drop. I checked today and the price on one of them dropped 24% as a Prime Deal.
