Well, still don't know if I'm going or not. Just got the e-mail from the guys on the rig describing what is wrong, and what they've done about it. It's not a problem with my equipment. Called my boss, and he hadn't received that email, so forwarded it to him.
I have no problems jumping on a plane to go tell them what's wrong, but would really hate to get stuck there while waiting on parts. I know from guys that were on the rig previously that the living quarters and food suck bigtime.

I mean, I can understand swap, but why the rest?

The paranoid reason: If you get hacked/exploited, and you set your mount options for your partitions (read-only, nosuid, etc), the exploit/hacker won't be able to access your system files or your data files. They're safe and sound and locked away. I know, the chance that a normal desktop user's gonna have that problem is slim to none, but like I said, it's the paranoid reason.

If you crash, it'll prevent the loss of your data and downloads (since you're keeping them elsewhere and they won't be affected), and you can also upgrade the kernel and distribution files without having to reinstall everything. You don't want a ton of nonessential files taking up space in /, you want to give that space to grow with subsequent releases, but you don't want it crowded with files that you keep in /home and elsewhere.

If there's a problem and your temporary and log files grow insanely large for whatever reason, it won't crash your system, the problem will be far removed from /, and you'll be able to track down the problem and solve it.

If you're a speed junkie, the separation can actually improve boot and performance times, but you probably won't notice it unless you're performing benchmark testing.

And finally, my actual reason... I'm bored and I wanna fuck with shit. :d
