These highly transmittable viruses cause sudden onset gastroenteritis presenting as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping abdominal pain, and sometimes fever. The duration of the illness is approximately 24-60 hours, although patients can continue to shed the virus for 48 hours or longer after symptoms have resolved.
Yes, norovirus is the virus responsible for many outbreaks for GI illness on cruise ships and other outbreaks in closed communities over the years. It is a virus and thus antibiotics do not shorten the duration of illness. There are no effective antiviral drugs against it. Treatment is entirely supportive - hydration is paramount and symptomatic relief is the only course of action.
We must be extremely vigilant with hygiene and decontaminating equipment after coming in contact with patients with possible symptoms. Routine PPE is sufficient (gloves) and no respiratory protection is required as it is not transmitted effectively via airborne particles. Soap and water for the hands is the best option, as some studies indicate that alcohol-based hand rub may not be as effective in killing the norovirus. Decontamination of equipment is best done with a dilute bleach-based solution.
Volunteers/employees/staff should follow agency guidelines but in general should not return to work until at least 48 hours after symptoms resolve to reduce the chance of infecting co-workers or our patients.
This too shall pass, but hand hygiene and equipment cleaning should be frequent over the next couple weeks.

I've heard stories of guys that could pick up a quarter with a forklift, and kinda understand the mechanics involved, but have never personally seen it done.


Oh, and the donuts on the scissor lift were with me about 30 feet in air, but going VERY slowly. One spin would probably take about 35-40 seconds. The polished concrete floor was wet. lol
