Nah, the yard was full of weeds to start with after 2+ years of no care, and then the drought hit with the watering restrictions and we just gave up on it. We really wanted it to be decent, we paid to have it fertilized and aerated and we dumped some seed on it, but it didn't help.

Lance, tbh, if you can't water, sod nor seed will work. Not much you can do 'till water restrictions are lifted. About the only thing I can think of is weed and feed, but too much of that with no water will leave you with a nice dirt backyard. Also, dog poop isn't good when trying to establish grass.

We're allowed to water 2 days a week for 30 minutes....but if you get sod and do it in the spring, you can get a permit from the city that allows you to water as needed. But, with drought prices in effect for water, after you go over your first 3,000 gallons, the price jumps A LOT....and then it goes up even more if you break 5,000 gallons.

Yep, I'd say that lawn is pretty far gone. Best option may just be to make a nice large patio (bricks, concrete, etc) plants some flower beds that take minimal water/frost tolerant, make some stone pathways, then sod the rest and hope for weather change.

It was actually fairly green in the spring when it was wet, but it dried up in a hurry...except for the weeds.

There was no irrigation system put in the back yard, so it has to be watered 'manually'. We bought a sprinkler that got good coverage on the yard, but the water restrictions were killer. The only things growing (and still growing) are the weeds. So after a certain point we just said fuck it, we don't want to just waste water and drive our water bill up.

Muddy, You guys have 10 times the humidity we have,, fuck that.. 95f 60% humidity heat index of 100f here, not that bad really,

I just like to bitch about it being too hot in the summer and bitch about it being too cold in the winter..

Hal,

How much snow would you guys have if the flood storm thing had been in teh winter time?

In eastern Canada (home of MrsM, Sameracheas...) they have a high humidity index like that. When it's hot out there it's a steambath.

Week after our flood it was 34C (about a million F) and we had some humidity. I walked into work and my shirt stuck to me  I couldn't handle that kind of heat..

How much snow? Not sure I understand the question. It snows in October and the rivers are frozen over by early November, so the flood thing doesn't confront us to much in the winter

non a-hole answer, it never floods in the winter, too cold..

I contact an organization I used to be a part of, ask if I can help and they say - We'll send a vehicle to your residence, pick you up and drop you off. Wear comfortable clothes and/or clothes you can dispose of..

So we don't have disasters here  I'm thinking that it will be like New Orleans. I'll be making and piling sandbags, rescuing people off rooftops from a boat

I worked for 5 or 6 hours, lugging boxes with supplies onto a large bus....going to a site, dropping same boxes off. Rinse, repeat...

This chick kept telling me - Take a break dude you don't want to pull something or hurt your back! I quietly say - I work in a warehouse, this is a bit of a break for me

I live exactly 20 miles south of eastern Canadia, I think we have approx the same weather.

I'll type slower and louder so you can understand my question, :banghead:

When it rained a lot and your streets flooded, if that rain had actually been snow (white stuff, like you get in the winter) how much snow would that have been if it had been snow instead of rain?

(inches/metric shit of rain = feet/metric shit of snow, it can vary regionally depending on average conditions)

How much snow would you guys have if the flood storm thing had been in teh winter time?

wtf

Okay, to answer your second question once you translated...there are 10 millimeters in each centimeter. There are 2.5 centimeters in an inch. So 100 mm would equate to about 4 inches.

Not very much considering I took pictures last year of me driving home in over 20 inches of snow. But yes, you live close to our border so you know...

It was more the constant rain all spring....every day almost for weeks and months. Most years we're totally dry, I could normally count the number of rainy days on one hand in the spring..

LED is a little confusing....it's both the way to backlight a LCD screen and also a type of tech that replaces LCD. You have to be careful when buying.

Plasma is still supposed to be good, less blurring during on-screen action than LCD's, but brutal if it's in a room with light sources shining on it. (too reflective)

Hal-9000
07-25-2013, 06:09 PM
Word is that Plasma also does better with SD sources...if you're still in the dark ages like me. They can be quite a bit cheaper and 'burn in' isn't an issue anymore with current technology.

Plasmas are supposed to have great color and shadow detail compared to some LCD's. You may want to look at one at a store first.

(I'm in the same boat now because I can't afford 1500 for a TV with smart stuff etc)

My current Samsung is a 37" LCD, the reason it needs replaced is due to burn in....... or something like that anyway! Sometimes it looks fine then other times you can see this dark half square on the left of the screen........ gets pretty annoying :wha:

LCD's rarely suffer from burn in. It's a Plasma trait because of how plasmas display images...they are fairly warm too..

so how the hell did you get burn in on an LCD? Leave it on a static image for 180 days?

Question - does a Full 1080p HD TV make SD look better? :-k

No...it would typically make it worse.

Just think lines of resolution...1080 has more than 720 for example.

So if the TV is displaying an SD image, the 1080 resolution would hi-lite the crap image if anything.

If the source is 1080p, then a TV that displays 1080p would look wonderful

Depends on the source my 1080p looks better set to 720p playing my virgin media basic channels HD looks better set at 1080p

kind of goes with what I said...Red is 'downsizing' his resolution to 720p to get the better image from his source, because the source is less than 1080p

I went to a store Goof and made the guy show me two TV's...SD sources and HD sources on the two TV's...

the SD on the LCD looked horrible and it actually looked pretty good on the plasma...

and HD sources on both TV's looked great....the plasma with an HD source looked 'warmer' if you know what that means. More of a pastel, controlled picture as opposed to the LCD's 'sharper' more defined picture.

Supposed experts say that you should set your full HD TV's to a more warm display, rather than the 100 contrast, 100 color DYNAMIC pictures that some people have.

and HD sources on both TV's looked great....the plasma with an HD source looked 'warmer' if you know what that means. More of a pastel, controlled picture as opposed to the LCD's 'sharper' more defined picture.

Supposed experts say that you should set your full HD TV's to a more warm display, rather than the 100 contrast, 100 color DYNAMIC pictures that some people have.

There seems to be less and less choice of Plasma's now though! Just checked my bank account, with all this OT ive been working recently i think i can afford a pretty decent Samsung 40" LED with built in Freeview HD (i don't have an HD receiver so that would be a pretty handy addition :) ).......... decisions decisions

to me Goof, the plasmas seem more of a crapshoot...you could save 200 pounds but probably the LCD is a safer, more reliable choice

That's why I went with the LED backlit LCD TV....I've had LCD's with zero problems, didn't feel like trying out a plasma....plus the plasmas don't come as big as the LCD's.

and Goof this goes back to my previous post...Lance has an LCD screen, backlit by little LED lights. There are (or will be) TV's that use true LED technology from start to finish to display the picture.

Question - does a Full 1080p HD TV make SD look better? :-k

1080p? no....but...

My 240hz 1080p 55" smart tv does pretty damn good with SD, especially considering the picture is still huge. I think it's the way the 240hz and the processor/internal filters work on my LG.

I'll put it this way, the SD pic on my old 42" 60hz 720p tv was worse than the pic on my 55" even though the screen is huge in comparison.

You could put an 480p SD video file on a thumb drive and go to the store and plug it in to see. I know the LG's and Samsungs will play most media including MKV by default.

I read that some LG's use the built in converter to 'down-convert' signals so the image looks good with SD. Probably the speedy refresh rate on your big TV helps as well Pony.

It's funny how some TV's can handle all source material well, while others blatantly remind you that your SD is indeed, ghetto  (my Sony and an older Samsung I had...)

I don't know how it does it, all I know is it takes a dual core processor to get it done and the results are stunning. The 240hz looks so lifelike and has so much depth I'm amazed. It has played everything I've thrown at it extremely well, including the m720p rips. I thought for sure those would look like crap on the larger screen.

I dont have a Sunday without bookings until December. I really shouldn't complain about being really busy as we've had our fair share of quiet times in the last 12 months but bloody hell I'm stuggling with the workload now.

Spray painting, so you're getting lots of practice at the up and down motion whilst gripping a cylindrical object. :-k
