Fuck. I am going to have a funeral to go to this week. My best friend's dad is on his deathbed. I've known the big Yeti for quite a long time...and I have learned so much from him in the last 15 years...so many tutorials from him that his sons werent interested in. The guy is a friggin genius, he could fix goddam anything...head engineer for channel 3 in CT, he just designed & oversaw their conversion to HD a year or two ago...many an explanation about signal levels and optimizing them for the format they are being introduced to...such much knowledge, its helped immensely with mixes and all the music shit we've done over the years. I hope we can still go retrieve that fkn 36 channel Neve board from the ch 3 garage in Avon, that thing is worth 10 grand probably.
Fuckin hell. I am not a fan of carrying coffins. He's frustrated with the breathing tube and wants it out and doesnt give a shit if he cant survive without it.

yeah, good advice when I'm in so much pain I can't walk...
okay, here it is friends of mine:
Bought this car, liked it for the first day and then started having some sciatica nerve pain after driving. Left foot went numb/tingly/cold, lower back and above my ass cheek was white hot pain and then my knee started to go. All within 5 days of driving the car. Don't drive the car for a few hours, symptoms subside...get back in and pain returns....to foot/ankle/calf muscle, hamstring and lower back...all on the left side. My calf muscle seizes up every night...and throughout the day. It cramps until I almost piss my pants.
pic of car with seat all the way back...I'm 6 feet tall, 215 pounds and ummm semi-muscular. Little cramped but should be ok, right?

Here's how shitty people are:
I'm down in Florida in one of those outdoor shopping centers. I'm looking for a store so I mosey on over to one of those free standing directories to see where the store's at. There's a middle-aged looking woman and her (maybe) 10 year old kid standing there looking at the directory slightly off to the left side. I roll up to slightly off to the right side, just close enough to (what I believe) not cause discomfort for anybody and I start looking over the directory listing and the map. Keep in mind, I'm like 3 yards away from this woman and her kid and about 3 yards away from the directory. Out of the corner of my eye, I notice the woman staring at me. I pay no mind and just mind my own business. Not but 5 seconds later, the woman cuts and stands in front of me intentionally, her back turned towards me, and gives a hard look over her right shoulder at me, as if I have no right to be in the same general area as her and her kid. It took me every ounce of restraint from screaming at the bitch. I wanted to whip my knife out, gut her in the kidney, and leave her child motherless. I just turned around and rolled away to go look for another directory that wasn't owned by any aging inconsiderate bitches.
I hate people.

the idea with the Toyota bump is to create an equal distance for your legs...one on the pedals, one on the bump.
this bump throws my left leg back 2 or 3 inches, then cants my foot up at a 35 degree angle. It actually shifts my hip back, when your ass should be relatively equally dispersed on the seat...

not finished yet...you think I complain about pain mildly? I live with it daily....and then this happens
this is my trunk...there are 6 different kinds of car seat cushions...obusforme, meditech and some foam I used to try and fashion something for the seat..

if you google 'car seat causes leg or back pain' you'll come across a million sites featuring all sorts of cars...and the users develop sciatica or leg pain from driving for 30 minutes...
Toyota is prevalent as an offender...along with Honda, Kia...anyone who makes compact cars...
further research explains that the seats are too narrow, they have too much bolstering on the sides and the angle of the 'bucket' is too severe....your knees should never be higher than your hips.

so I try to adjust the seat a million different ways and buy every cushion or full seat cover on the market...nothing really helps...
I see my chiropractor twice...he gets an amazing amount of pops out my hips when he adjusts me...
The pain worsens as I drive the car more...for example Monday is ok, by Thursday I can't walk....
so I relent and go to my doc...she examines my legs, knees and hamstrings and notes that my left everything is swollen, one attachment that runs on the outside of knee and connects to my calf muscle ' is lower than it should be ' ..
so she schedules a series of back X-rays and ultrasounds on my knee and my left hamstring...
back X-ray shows three herniated discs, no scarring and all on the left side
ultrasound one shows anterior ligament of the knee is swollen and fluid under the kneecap
ultrasound two shows a tear in my hamstring, it's not recent and has atypical scarring (indicating it was busted and not operated on )

and so here I am....I started complaining to my car dealer within 5 days of buying the car
I offered to take a minor loss and return the car. He said fuck you, it's bought.
No offense but I can take a lot...but when a limb is this painful to the point of dysfunction...I doubt even you guys with office jobs would have a tough time going to work.
I make my living with my back and my legs. I currently am looking at 3 types of pain killers, anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxants. I know I make a lot of jokes about drugs, but when I take some of this stuff I can't function properly...
I've been referred to a sports medicine doctor...I guess it might be a little more severe than I felt...
Hal-9000
10-06-2013, 01:48 AM
Okay Muddy, you're me
You just bought a 23000 car and have deduced through careful analysis over 23 days, that this new car is hurting your body. You can't augment the car so you try everything else.
You drive other cars and the pain mysteriously vanishes...get back in your new car and you can't walk after an hour...
So you're left with the horrible choice of either selling it, or living with all of this new pain that you've never had before (my left leg is the last bastion of non-injured body parts on my body )
Changing car seats is more problematic than you think because of side airbags in the seats...voiding the warranty...finding a non-racing seat to install as your replacement...
the little hump is made of plastic and moves slightly...the Toyota shop guys looked at it today and thinks that it's a piece on top of the floorboard, inserted under the carpet and could be removed with little trouble...
Hal-9000
10-06-2013, 01:53 AM
so my choice is simple....trade the car or try to augment the existing ergonomics within...
if you think I'm freaking for a small reason, I could scan and post my ultrasound reports ....but that's not the point.
I've found out I'm not alone and some guys have sold their brand new SUV's because of the same thing. Either the seat base is too short or the car/floor relationship isn't ergonomically sound.
I love the other aspects of the car and would hate to take a bath on the re-sale (I appreciate your concern...) but you tell me. I drove a 2014 Camry today for about 30 minutes. It doesn't have that stupid floor bump, it has better seats and has more cabin room/leg space all over. 30 minutes later my knee and foot are fine, my back pain vanishes and my cock gets hard once again.
I made a horrible mistake and have lost time at work and am not sleeping because of it....I feel trapped. If I don't dump the car, I will lose my job in time. I need to walk and I need my back.
Hal-9000
10-06-2013, 01:59 AM
oh..and the bath is - bought for 23000, they'll give me '16000' so it's a loss of 7000 and then 'reduce' the price on a 2013 Camry..this new guy today said he would make it so my trade price would be closer to 20000, than the 16000 on paper
but you guys know car dealers...what they subtract off of one side, they add onto the other
The Camry has way more horsepower, way better cabin comfort and is an all round more luxurious car. No road noise, better handling, heavier...just better everything.
it's a tempting choice..

Ok, have had a quick gloss over Hal's car troubles.
If they cant/wont remove the footrest for you, you could be within your rights to reject the car from the dealers.
If you do this, you will need to give everything back to the dealership, All keys, Logbooks (or whatever they are over in Canadaland), pretty much everything they gave you when you bought the car needs to go back. Every car dealership has an allocated budget/system for dealing with rejected cars. Although most are rejected due to more common faults like mechanical issues/poor manufacturing.
You will need to give them a Letter of Rejection, stating the reason for rejecting the car. If the docs/sport physio suspect the car is causing the leg/back issue then get a letter off them stating so. also if there is anything online about others experiencing the same problem get printouts of it all and supply it to them with everything.
Over here in the UK, consumer rights allows any new car to be rejected any time before 6months of ownership.
If the dealer still rejects it, go above them and go to Toyota Head Offices in Canada.
If you believe removing the footrest will fix it, offer this to HO as a compromise, but get it from them that doing so wont invalidate the warranty.
everything you send or say to them should be copied for your records too.

The so called foot rest is one of my major complaints about newer cars as well. I understand the theory of why it's there, but in practice, they are never, ever (at least in mid range vehicles) at the same distance, level and angle as the gas pedal. My wife's SRT has one that is close, but I still can't drive with my left foor there. I usually either do what Dee described, or tuck my left foot under the clutch pedal (yeah, I know, stupid) On long trips, I can put the cruise control on, and bring both feet back to the regular floorboard.
Hal, it's very common (though not always advertised, for dealers to have a system of customer satisfaction. Most will allow you to return a car for a valid reason with most if not all $$ refunded ( less mileage, etc) within 30 days. I would be all over the dealership Manager or even owner. If that doesn't work, go to Toyota of Canada. It's not unreasonable at all that they would make a deal with you on the Camry at very close to the same payments you already agreed to with the Corolla.
Sorry about your difficulties, but keep at it, don't let it slid. Check your government regulations about vehicle returns.

It's about a 1/2 hour to 1.5 hour commute depending....it's the 2014 seat in tandem with the foot bump thingy...the seats have too much bolstering on the sides, not enough support in the middle, so it tends to cant your leg outwards....the bump is one of the largest they put in cars after doing some checking...so my first step is eliminating it to see if it makes any difference.
thanks for the thoughts Dee but I can't tuck my foot under the other one, not enough room in the cabin...they put a piece of plastic shrouding on each side of the driver's cabin (center console and left side) so your feet get further scrunched into the area by the pedals.

yeah I drove a handful of compacts and the only reason I passed on the Civic (2013) is the seat position was too low and that model has a really deep dashboard...so you feel like you're too low and too far back driving...same sort of seats as I recall...they form a real bucket and have lots of side bolstering to give you that pinned in feeling..
and the ironic bit is that I could recommend that Toyota Corolla for about 100 different reasons over the others...when I sat in it I immediately felt higher, there was more visibility and it was easy to drive from the get-go.....they lengthened the wheelbase and the overall length so it's almost Camry sized...
it has some new features (for Corollas) in teh way of a back up camera and easy to use steering wheel controls ...and they have these cool LED front headlights that create a horizon glow that circles the front of the car and supposedly don't annoy oncoming traffic
and Toyotas are like Hondas...relatively low maintenance compared to other makes because both Honda and Toyota having been using the same drive trains for over 10 years in their Civics and Corollas...
up here Hyundais and Ford Focus's and Mazda 3's (others in the same class) have problems, everything from the transmissions to the air conditioning

Yeah, posted pictures and huge explanations over the weekend as someone implied/thought I was 'freaking' out
not being able to walk requires a plan of action...
anyways - note mine is more form fitted to the entire left side of the floor? As well as having no additional floor room to speak of ( I sat in my friend's Tacoma over this past weekend to check...he has oodles of room before the bump)

Ah, gotcha, because I was wondering what the fuss about it was because I have a ton of room under there....I rarely use that foot rest and still am very comfortable when driving. Although I'm rather short compared to the rest of you guys.

got a call into a nice Toyota bodyshop...buddy is checking another 2014 Corolla today to confirm it's just a piece of plastic over the floorboard with nothing critical beneath...mine sorta moves and sounds hollow when I thump it..
fingers crossed
The one in my truck is really solid.

true, I'm betting everything would be the same in a manual except no footrest and probably a different carpet. That does make me think it is removable Hal.

You drive a stick 50 miles a day in rush hour traffic in a city of 3.5 million and see how much you enjoy it :hand:
thanks for taking the time guys but my dealership said the most they could do is appraise it as a trade and rape me for 5-7000 dollars
That's Bullshit imho! you've bought something. it isn't working for you. they should at least come to compromise of some sorts.
Put a bit of fear into them, ask for the Dealerships main office/CEO contact details. or the details for Toyota Canada as you'd like a second opinion off someone higher up.
bend the truth a little, if you do go high up, say you only had a short test so couldn't really get a feel of the seating during said drive.
the medical thing holds no weight, as my doctor(s) won't go on record saying the car is creating the injury for me....one check into my past history and they'll see that I suffered a hamstring tear about 5 months ago....broken right femur 23 years ago...
their stance is simple - you test drove the car and accepted ownership
Your previous medical history doesn't really matter. it certainly didn't to my injury claim when I had an car accident a few years back and had/have trouble with my left shoulder, they said that the history and injury couldn't be linked.
Show them your previous car history and the trouble free motoring you've had with those cars. I get what you mean about the Docs not stating it is the issue.
Obviously if I'm just repeating shit you've already tried then let me know and I'll stfu!
* also broken femur! how'd you do that, if you don't mind me asking!? that's the hardest bone in the body!!

I started my complaints 5 days after purchase...my sales guy had two back operations and showed me his scars when he visited my work...so he was aware...
I was thinking about a letter/email to Toyota Canada ....maybe that's the route I'll take....otherwise, almost every car dealer who sells a car (in my city anyways) will not take a return for full value...
I was thinking about a letter/email to Toyota Canada ....maybe that's the route I'll take....
It's worth a shot! they can only say no, but at least then you'd have tried.

Oh yeah Hal.. Forgot to tell you.. My stepmother works for a toyota dealership.. She tells me that Toyota corporate reads the surveys you fill out.. They take those things very very serious.
Also, here in America there are Toyota reps that travel around to the dealerships and handle problems..
Letters to the dealer are worthless.. Only corporate can help you.
Take that for what its worth.

thanks lads..I really appreciate it
I just got my sports medicine doc appointment for Nov 1st and will start some physio this week...
Something inside is saying - this may be a body problem, not a Toyota problem so if I pitch the car right now, I very well may have the same pain in a new car...and I'd never forgive myself if that happened
so I do the body work first (mine), then try a small change on the car ( remove the floor thingy ) and then if I'm still not able to walk, I hit the Toyota main office/corporate and try to get them to take the car...
I just found out that car dealers in the UK and US are way more forgiving than Canadian dealers, as in more willing to take a return on a car

Hal-9000

did you see my posts on the weekend mon frere?
I've tried 6 different car seat cushions (picture of them in my trunk) and some that are the full seat thingys
I even tried to create one in the shape of the seat out of foam pieces and a slip cover.....there is something to that theory for sure. Chiro guy online said your hips should never be lower than your knees (within reason) and most bucket seats in all compact makes in the past 5 years cause sciatica nerve pain/leg pain...the idea is to raise the back of the seat only...best cushion so far is an old school square wedge, looks like a piece of cheese.
there is a sweet spot Muddy I'm sure...trying to get that bump off the floor without voiding the warranty is step one
did some research into switching out the car seat....that's a shitfest and a half so I won't be attempting

never thought I would need or want an option like that....I'm a damn Canadian, we start our cars in -30C, sit in them and freeze our asses off until we get home...it's the Canadian way

Those fuckers deliberately ignored a note on my front door that said "If no answer, please knock no38" as I was in there looking after the neighbours dog while they were away!
I was in that house no longer than 15 minutes, while the dog had some food and took a dump outside before I went back home, opened the door to find the 'we missed you' note! :x

Best i've heard of is my mate missing an amazon delivery, despite actually being there in the house, was one of the delivery companies that take a picture of the door as proof they had been there, and they left it over the neighbours side gate. mate witnessed it all from his doorstep after seeing the van approach, driver even said hello to him!.
Played Amazon for a undelivered item. they send him a pic of 'his door', he sends back his actual door, him standing there holding a letter with his address on it.
Amazon send a new package out to him and delivery driver does it again! this time tho, the neighbour is in to accept on his behalf, and corrects the driver.
bonus is he ends up with 2 BlueRay players ;)

I remember big yed telling me about hitting 180 in the thing and still being able to step on it, said it would have done 200 if he had the balls  that was back in the day when he worked at the airport and used to fill the fugger with jet fuel

Well said, rbp. Thanks fellas.
yeah Kev, that 427 in that thing is a bone fide early-mid 60s 700+hp fuggin Nascar engine that they used to have in the cars they raced back in those days. It is such ridiculous overkill for an 1800lb car. We're most likely going to take the drive train we just removed from my buddy's convertible stang and pop it in there...~400hp will still be overkill and we're probably going to have to mod the rear to take some bigger tires, but nowhere near the overkill that 427 is  that engine is probably worth $40k+ by my buddy's estimate.

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
Did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

I get where you're at...friend's dad passed away a few years ago...We were told he had a brain tumour August, and by September he was gone. He introduced me to photography, a passion I still have. He always called me "The 5th Beatle" in his family. :)

Same here, only my dad died 24 years ago. The man who wrote those words (Roger Waters) has obviously experienced loss - said so well.
It is said he wrote it for Syd Barrett, a ex-band member who kind of lost the plot along the way mentally and became a recluse. But I think it's also for Roger's dad who died in the war...that whole Wish You Were Here album is full of anger and frustration and was unfortunately overshadowed by The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon.

Worst ever sudden weather change for me? About 1988 or so, while stationed at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota, one day in March, it was about 60f out, clear and nice. Washed and waxed my truck, went to the movie theater on base, had left the windows down. Came out of the movie to snow on the ground and inside my truck.

It's a local one so I'm hoping to promote what we offer at the salon and build up our client base, the new machine I got last month has been a lot more popular than I thought/hoped it would be.

Excellent idea. Well done. Perhaps consider a drawing for free services for those that provide an email address, or some other way to collect data on people that stop at the booth. In some shows the badges have scanable bar codes that allow the exhibitor to automatically get contact information for each badge they scan.

Cable stations can show whatever they want. Generally they don't because they don't want to scare off advertisers. Back in the day, AMC used to show a bunch of movies fully uncut, but that's before they started accepting advertising cash. I believe network TV stations are the only ones that are regulated by the government.

If I remember right, Vince Gilligan said they were allowed one 'fuck' per season, so they had to choose wisely as to where they wanted to use it. And even then, on the broadcast when it's shown on AMC, they blocked out the word 'fuck'....you could see their lips move and say it, you just couldn't hear it.

I guess if they cleaned the show up to network standards it would be a totally different show. Thanks for the info.. We were wondering.

My dad had that. If it's any consolation, they've been using it for at least 25 years. My dad joked that his physio got his credentials from the Joseph Mengle school of medicine!
It didn't help him much because after X-Ray technology finally improved, they found he had a hairline crack in his spine. No amount of muscle manipulation can help that!

Its subtle and very significantly depends on how well the diagnosis is, what point combos are applied...doing it for local muscle relief has its benefits but its tough to really get the big picture if that's all one is trained to do.
If you ever get a treatment from a real energy worker that actually has some demonstrable potential...that is a whole nother ball of wax...but such people are exceedingly rare.

He uses pads stored in this hot freezer box kinda thingy (I asked him if he could get me a lobster outta there ) and wraps the area while using tens (electrical pads) to stimulate the area. Then he uses his big strong hands to manipulate the area behind my knee and my calf....which hurts like hell.
Then he gets the acu needles out and inserts them up the length of the back of my thigh and in that popliteus area...he seems quite knowledgeable
