From dust to dust, people and cars come and go, but sometimes the old is reborn … and out of the dust emerges something immaculate.

A 1969 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 428 Cobra Jet is a mouthful to say but it will drop any car enthusiasts jaw. This particular garage-find was owned and perfectly preserved by a now-deceased automotive connoisseur.

Larry never washed the car for fear of scratching the paintjob or cause even the slightest bit of rust. Yahoo News estimates that the only time the car was ever washed was before delivery. Accordingly, the car is in absolute show room condition, except for a layer of dust.

This snake features a larger, 428-cubic-inch Cobra Jet engine mated to a four-speed manual transmission, which has only run 8,500 miles in total. The spark plugs, belts, fan, and hoses are all original. The only items that are not from 1968 are the tires.

Considering this highly collectable GT500 has sat since 1973 it’s an extreme rarity. The Mustang was originally purchased for just $5,245 in 1969. Now, though,it should sell at auction for over $100,000.

The car will be auctioned off by Ron Gilligan Auctioneering on April 25th.

It also looks like pack-rat owner also owned a 1971 Ford Ranchero with only 53,000 miles on it, and get this … a 1974 Ford Econoline Custom 100 van with only 554 original miles. Both vehicles are for sale along with a variety of other mint, perfectly maintained vehicles from the estate.

My friend had a 1969 GT350. He got it in 1988 for $3,000. He sold it for $7,000 and thought he was king of the world.

I drove it quite a bit...it was just a clapped out thing that had trouble getting out of its own way. Looked cool - maroon with gold stripes, but the engine was very tired.

Told him he shoulda kept it...

Saw an original 69 boss 429 go for 130ish not too long ago. It was also an unrest or ed original. Tbh, I agree with Hugh. I've never liked the fronts on the 69-70 shelbys. I'd rather have the boss 9

also, the boss 429 is one of my favourite stock cars to drive in forza.... its absolutely horrible around the track unless you give it a little flick just before the corners and then it sticks like shit to a blanket.... then you can be 4+ seconds a lap faster than everyone else in the same car

Just remember, the gt 350 Hugh posted is a 65 or 66. The 69 to 70 gt 350 looks just like the gt 500 pictured in the op.

The boss 429 was never meant to handle. it was only built to allow the 429 to be used in nascar.

True if you're talking about the remake, however, that was based on yet a different bodystyle. 67 or 68, I don't remember which, and the movie car was heavily modified. Ford nor shelby ever made a car that looked much like that.

Even Shelby wasn't in love with the 69 / 70 styling. It was the same team that penned the 71-73 Mustang styling I was told.

I'm a bit of a Mustang fan...saving up to buy a 2005 - 2009 or a 2011-2013...not sure until more funds are saved!

KevinD

Noilly if you can, I'd go with the 11 up body. The new 5.0 is a great little motor, and responds to mods about as well as a ls. I'm not a fan of the rear end on the 11 ups, but oh well.

I agree. I'd take an 05-10, and install the new 5.0 in it. No 4.slow for me.

Just my 2 cents.. I never really cared for Mustangs.. I think they were mass produced over hyped semi attractive cars.. I guess you have to be a Ford guy to appreciate them..

interesting trivia...director of that movie wanted the cars to go at least 75 mph in the scene...they both hit speeds of 110 mph during filming

I rewatched the scene the other night and didn't think they were going that fast or that it was 'the greatest car chase scene' filmed....I did however love the sounds of the cars when they really laid the pedal down

its not that great TBH.... the bits with the jumpds around frisco are basically all the same shots with loads of different camera angles

oh and the black car completely missed the petrol station at the end.... you can see it carry on driving berhind it :lool:

110 mph is pretty good for a movie made 40 years ago...but yes, it's not as hair raising as the reputation suggests..

another cool thing ...it was Steve's Mustang and a 68 Dodge Charger 440 Magnum in the chase scene and the camera cars had to go the same speeds while filming...

High compression big block, large by huge cam, idling at 1000+ rpm. The smell of raw regular leaded gas. Revving to 5000 rpm and slipping the clutch....... ah memories. And then we found nitrous. Glorious!

I like the car I have, and bought my NX 2000 new in '92. I could beat stock Fox body 5.0s of that era (keep with them in the straight and trounce them in the corners), and I've made it even "healthier" over the years, replacing everything with better than new components when things broke.

I've done a few calculations and the power to weight ratio of a 4.0 is about the same as what mine is stock, so I might be happy with one.

Will it feel similar, power-wise given the similar P2W ratio?

KevinD
03-28-2014, 01:39 PM
Very doubtful. Unless you compare torque curves, gearing and weight, it's back to apples and oranges. Both may be a blast to drive, but will feel different. I'm assuming you meant 5.0, not 4.0, right? It's just me, but I would never buy an American "sports" car without a v-8.

I actually meant the 4.0. Yeah, I know. :D The 2011 and up with the V6 tempts me because it makes the same power as the 2010 and previous V8 but gets the same gas mileage as my NX. And for not much more $.

My first car was a '74 Malibu with a 350 V8 so it does tempt me to hear that rumble again...

And, I'm also thinking that this next car might be a convertible, too...seems to be a plethora of them in the papers for about the same price of one with a roof. We'll see after the bank account fattens a bit more!

BTW Cool stickshift, Hal! Chix will dig it.
