Two sisters were arrested on a slew of charges for getting into a brawl with police officers who approached them asking about an attempted shoplifting.

According to Flagstaff police reports, employees at the Walmart located at 2601 E. Huntington called police around noon Tuesday after two women they recognized as suspects in an attempted theft of chicken wings at the local Albertson’s walked into their store. A male and female officer located the sisters outside Walmart and began asking them about the suspected shoplifting.

While they were questioning the sisters, the male officer asked the female officer for the younger sister’s field interview card so he could see if she had been trespassed from the Walmart before. Suddenly, the younger sister lunged at the female officer and swiped the card out of her hand, scratching the female officer in the process.

The struggle escalated from there.

Officers managed to take the younger sister to the ground, but she maneuvered onto her back and repeatedly kicked the male officer in the groin. He then felt the woman try to grab his groin area, so he hit her in the face.

During the struggle, the younger sister also managed to grab the field interview card off the ground. She then put it in her mouth, chewed it and swallowed it. She told police she ate the card because it contained her personal information.

Meanwhile, the older sister kept trying to pull the male officer off the younger sister. She also slammed her shoulder into him at one point. The female officer pushed the older sister away, but she continued to try to grab the male officer. That prompted him to take out his Taser and point it at the older sister. She responded by grabbing the 3-year-old child with her and holding the child up as a human shield.

The officers were finally able to handcuff the younger sister when the male officer then threatened to stun her with his Taser. She was placed in leg restraints and medics were called to check her for serious injuries before she and her sister were taken to jail. The struggle drew a large group of onlookers, some of whom completed witness statements. It was also caught on Walmart’s surveillance video.

Jennifer Lynn McCabe, 23, was arrested and charged with shoplifting, child neglect, resisting arrest, tampering with physical evidence and two counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer. Shantelle Martine McCabe, 27, was arrested and charged with shoplifting, obstructing an investigation, hindering a prosecution and one count of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer. They were booked into the Coconino County Detention Facility.
