ROSENBERG, TX (KTRK) -- Rosenberg police say they found nearly half a million dollars worth of cocaine, and it all started with a faulty tail light.

Just before 8pm Thursday, a Rosenberg police officer spotted a 2008 Ford pickup traveling northbound in the 24000 block of US Highway 59 with defective tail lamps. A traffic stop was conducted for the traffic violation.

While speaking with the driver, who was not the registered owner of the vehicle, Investigator Schnacky received consent to search the vehicle utilizing his K-9, Rex. The K-9 alerted to the vehicle and a false compartment was discovered in the rear passenger area.

Once the compartment was opened, police say 15 kilograms of cocaine were located. The cocaine, which has an approximate street value of $450,000, and the Ford pickup were seized. The investigation is ongoing.

Typically if you deny consent they will call the drug dog to walk around the vehicle, if the dog "hits" on the car they then have probably cause to search without consent. I don't know why the article says the driver gave consent to having the dog search when legally they don't need it.
