An Atlantic City casino is charging that a world-famous championship poker player hauled in $9.6 million at a baccarat table after pulling off an elaborate card-cheating scheme.

The Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday against World Series of Poker champion Phil Ivey Jr.

The New Jersey-bred card shark, nicknamed “The Phenom” for his mathematical skills, used a tactic known as “edge sorting,” where a defect in cards is exploited to identify them, the suit says.

The cards he played with during the edge-sorting stunt were deemed defective because the patterns on their backs were not uniform, making them partially detectable from the player’s vantage point.

The cards, made by a Kansas City manufacturer, have rows of small white circles designed to look like the tops of cut diamonds.

But the Borgata claims some of them were only half a diamond or a quarter of one.

This allegedly enabled Ivey, 38, and a cohort to sort and arrange good cards and obtain an unfair advantage while playing baccarat.

The casino says the edge-sorting technique violates casino gambling regulations.

Ivey instructed a dealer to flip cards in particular ways, depending on whether it was a desirable card in baccarat, the suit says.

The numbers 6, 7, 8 and 9 are considered good cards. Bad cards would be flipped in different directions, so that after several hands of cards, the good ones were arranged in a certain manner with the irregular side of the card facing in a specific direction. That enabled Ivey to spot the good cards when they came out of the dealer chute, the suit charges.

Ivey’s lawyer declined to comment on Friday.

This is not the first time Ivey has been ensnared in an edge-sorting controversy. A lawsuit in Britain claims he and an accomplice amassed almost $12 million by cheating.

The suit claims Ivey wanted the cards shuffled using an automatic shuffling machine, which would not alter the way each card was aligned. This would allow him to keep track of the defective cards. In that case, Ivey has denied any misconduct.

Ivey, a deliberate player, has won nine World Series of Poker bracelets. He compares himself on his Web site to Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Muhammad Ali.

The player, a Californian who grew up in New Jersey, said on his Web site that he mastered poker in his teen years by playing in *Atlantic City using a fake ID.

So the casino makes a huge mistake by letting non-standard playing card be used on a live table and now they are made because an extremely intelligent card player noticed and took advantage?

:haha:

that's pretty much what I read. and if a dealer is complicit why isnt he a defendant in the suit?

that's what I'm seeing...if someone arranged the cards a certain way when being dealt, that would be a dealer accomplice

my sis has managed 6 casinos on our west coast...her hubby is the head of security

I asked if they encounter card counters etc and what do they do if they suspect a guy is playing an angle...the bro in law said it's just like in the Vegas movies, if there's no electronic equipment evident and they're just going on a hunch, they take the guy aside and tell him that they know he's counting cards and then they threaten him

so the takeaway is,

the house wants to be the one doing the fucking, and they complain about a sore asshole perchance it winds up otherwise.

yeah I shared the same thought with my sis and bro in law....if a guy can devise a system to count cards in a 6 deck shute, he deserves the winnings

 they didn't like that very much

did you know that Roulette is one of the best games to play because of player chance?

red/black around the wheel with one or two green spots....gives the player a 48% chance to win when betting on color, not number

I've always thought roulette would be one of the hardest games to make cash at

I used to watch (and play) a lot of poker, Phil Ivey is a fucking genius  His facial expression just never changes during a game........ how the fuck anyone can read him is beyond me (except maybe Danny Negraneu since he can read everyone  ).

If I got dealt 3 tens and 2 eights, I'd quietly pee my pants in a poker game

hal = obvious tells :lol:

I don't know about roulette, but my cousin kills at blackjack. He's always raking in dough when he goes to Vegas/Atlantic City.

I play poker. People tell me my tells are obvious and they're gonna take my money, yet I always end up breaking slightly higher than even when I leave the tables.

:hand:

Nobody's paying attention to the puddle on the floor. They might notice the smell though...

I got my ass handed to me playing that boat once in Texas Hold 'Em.

I think there's 38 spots on a North American roulette wheel and 37 on European...we have a double zero spot.

so there's 36 numbers, 18 black, 18 red, 2 green spots or zero spots.

If you're betting it's almost a 50/50 chance to be right when just betting colors. This is why the odds are 'better' than most casino games. This info from my sis, who would know

I'm a pretty fair 21 and baccarat player but have yet to play a hand in a casino...

I remember the first time I played out at Vegas. I got beat so bad on almost every hand. It took me until the next year to get the paces down. The biggest thing I had to learn was to be patient and to wait for decent cards to play.

If I made more money I'd probably hit the casino....my sister has watched people ruin their lives so she's kinda proud of me for not going in

Yeah, I'm glad I don't live near any casinos.

i don't see how it can be that the casino is the one that approved the cards in the first place and subsequently dealt the cards the way he asked (which they didn't need to do) in hopes of getting all his money could now try in a different way to get his money
