The superintendent of a small Southern California school district who makes more than the president of the United States has been put on administrative leave while his salary is reviewed.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the Centinela Valley Union High School District's board voted 5-0 Wednesday to suspend Jose Fernandez pending the investigation's outcome.

Fernandez was paid $674,559 last year to oversee a district that includes three high schools in the Los Angeles suburbs of Hawthorne and Lawndale.

President Obama was paid $400,000.

The superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District, who oversees more than 1,000 schools, was paid $393,106.

Since Fernandez's salary was reported by the Torrance Daily Breeze in February, angry parents have demanded he resign. Some have threatened to recall the school board's members.
