The family of the youngster, who was seven at the time and is now 11, sued education chiefs over the incident, which happened when he sat on a wooden bench.
A court heard that the “small injury” was expected to leave a permanent scar.
The boy, a pupil at Winterbourne Junior Boys’s School in Thornton Heath, south London, received £2,760 from Croydon Council.
One mum, who asked not to be named, said: “All of the mums have been laughing about it. It is such a joke.
“How can they say it is the school’s fault and sue them because he got a splinter on his bum?”
A single father, who also did not want to be identified, added: “If my son got a splinter in his backside I would just laugh it off and get the tweezers.”
Croydon council are said to have strongly contested the pay-out in court and are no longer in control of the school.
The school, which has around 225 pupils aged seven to 11, declined to comment.
