SAN DIEGO - A pedestrian was struck and killed by a passenger train Saturday near the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, midway between Old Town and downtown.
The 24-year-old man was struck by an Amtrak train about 3:06 p.m. at Pacific Highway at Washington Street, San Diego police Officer Jason Jarrells said. He died at the scene.
A witness says the man was wearing headphones and was trying to cross the tracks when he was hit.
The North County Transit District subsequently canceled its northbound Coaster train 689, and directed its passengers to take the trolley to the Old Town station to board northbound Coaster train 691. It was scheduled to depart Old Town at 5:06 p.m.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Coaster and Railroad Enforcement Unit are investigating. Anyone with information on the incident should call the sheriff's department.
