A mad beaver is being blamed for delaying traffic in Miramichi, N.B. on Tuesday, in what may be the most Canadian story of the year.

The furry little creature was spotted on Pleasant Drive, where it halted cars and drew stares from onlookers, Miramichi Online reported.

Cabbie Jim O'Neill told the website that he later spotted a beaver chasing a man up his driveway on King George Highway. He had earlier seen a beaver on Pleasant Drive and assumed it was the same one.

He hopped out of his car to snap a few photos but the beaver took an aggressive stance, slapping its tail on the ground and chasing him back into his vehicle.

The beaver may have been displaced from its home due to recent flooding that saw evacuations in areas such as Perth-Andover, CBC News reported.

Miramichi police deal with calls about animals every day but this was a first, Sgt. Ed Arbeau told the network.

"The damn thing was lost, it was going down the street. We didn't do anything, we showed up and seen what it was," he said.

This uniquely Canadian incident set off a torrent of tweets:

Angry beaver delays traffic, roams around Miramichi http://t.co/VuJWp0QmFV - only in Canada, this made my morning!

Possibly the most Canadian headline ever: "Angry beaver delays traffic, roams around Miramichi" Yes, for reals. http://t.co/1EdRQQJR1a

This wouldn't be the first time that the animal, which has been declared an official symbol of Canada, has shown pugnacious tendencies.

A beaver actually killed a photographer in Belarus last year. It bit the 60-year-old man with its "razor-sharp" teeth, slicing an artery and causing him to bleed to death.

And in 2012, a rabid beaver hopped out of a pond and chased children at a nature centre in northern Virginia.

This has nothing to do with the story but the headline did remind me of a joke.

Why is it called Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)?

...because "Mad Cow Disease" was already taken.

I'm sorry but if a beaver "took an aggressive stance" towards me I'd kick it into next week.

You's be surprised  The story is completely Canadiana tongue in cheek but they do have nasty teeth and incredible bite pressure...

that's the great thing about animals...usually you can just walk away from them when they get pissy.

unless its something large like a moose, then...best hope you have shelter

I think you'd be surprised if you saw one in the wild.. Some of these mother fuckers are big and can be quite cantankerous.. (coming from someone who had land next to a huge fuckin' beaver pond) These aint no kitty's..

They are groundhogs with a big tail is all. My uncle used to pay $5 for every dead groundhog we brought him (cattle accidentally step into the holes and occasionally break their legs).

We had ground hogs as well and there's a pretty big difference....

Beavers can grow over 4 foot long and averages 60 lbs and can be fiercely territorial.

A ground hog is nothing but a woodchuck that averages about 15 lbs. and eats flowers.

what people don't realize is that they use their mouths to chop down trees and haul logs....I've seen beavers in the reservoir by my house with 4 foot logs clamped as they swim..

like AT, I don't fear them but will never get in position to have that mouth near me

We're talking about the tiny beaver shown in the picture are we not? It's the size of a basketball and easily punted.

BTW Groundhogs can get up to 25-30 lbs and eat far more than flowers. Look it up if you don't believe me.
