Bathers were warned to watch out for the Portuguese man o’war, which floats just below the water’s surface and has stings that can cause serious injury.

One giant barrel jellyfish has already been washed up at Portland, Dorset.

Fortunately, however, that particular variety proved to be harmless.

Meanwhile, pest controllers are set to unleash a poison cloud to wipe out hordes of dangerous caterpillars.

The Forestry Commission will spray pesticides over Sulham Woods, at Tilehurst, Berks.

The oak processionary moth caterpillars, below, are covered in toxic hairs that can cause health problems.
