A Rhode Island middle school reportedly cancelled its annual honors night because of concerns that the event was too “exclusive.”
Parents of Archie R. Cole Middle school honors students received an email over the weekend in which they were notified that the tradition has been cancelled. The email was signed by the school’s principal, Alexis Meyer, and Assistant Principal Dan Seger.
“Members of the school community have long expressed concerns related to the exclusive nature of Honors Night,” read the email, according to Patch.
Instead of being honored at a night devoted entirely to their academic accomplishments, honors students will now be honored during team-based recognition ceremonies, as well as at graduation.
The school has stated that this new course of action will “afford us the opportunity to celebrate the individual and collective success of all students and their efforts, progress and excellence.”
Meanwhile, however, other “exclusive” events are set to continue running: Cole varsity athletes will be awarded with medals and trophies at an after school ceremony.
At least one parent has expressed displeasure with the recent change.
Joe Kosloski’s daughter Kaitlyn was not amongst those whose academic achievements were celebrated on honors night. Instead of frowning upon the event for its exclusivity, though, both Joe and Kaitlyn feel that the night served as a goal and as a lesson.
“That made me wanna work harder and a lot of other people work harder, so just the fact you can’t work towards it anymore then there is no goal,” Kaitlyn said of the newly cancelled event.
“How else are they supposed to learn coping skills, not just based on success, but relative failure, it might not be failure, but understand what it takes to achieve high levels,” Joe added.
