At least two people were killed and 10 others wounded in a string of Memorial Day weekend shootings reported over a span of less than 10 hours across Chicago.

The shootings, which all took place Saturday afternoon and evening, came just one day after hundreds of anti-violence protests were held across Chicago.

The weekend started quiet, with no reported shootings in the city Friday night and into Saturday morning. But by Saturday afternoon, one man was dead and another injured in a shooting on the 700 block of West 69th Street.

At about 3:45 p.m., two people were shot when someone fired at them from an alley, police said.

A 21-year-old man was shot in the arm and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in stable condition. A 31-year-old man suffered a wound to the back and was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, police said.

A second fatality occurred just hours later, when a 23-year-old man was shot in the chest in the 900 block of Windsor Avenue at about 8 p.m. Police said the man was standing on the street when someone fired shots at him. He was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition and later pronounced dead.

Police believe both fatalities may be gang-related.

At least 10 other people were wounded in shootings Saturday.

Just before 7:30 p.m. a 17-year-old boy was shot in the jaw in the 9300 block of South Ada Street, police said. The teen’s grandmother told police her grandson came into her home, motioned that he had been shot and collapsed on the floor. The teen was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center, officials said.

About fifteen minutes later, two people were shot in the 500 block of North Laramie Avenue. The two told police they were standing outside when someone approached them with a gun and fired multiple times in their direction before fleeing on foot. A 19-year-old man was shot in the back and a 20-year-old man was shot in the leg. Both were taken in stable condition to Stroger Hospital, police.

Around 8:15 p.m., two people were shot in the 6600 south Fairfield. The two told police they were standing outside when they heard shots and felt pain. A 20-year-old man was shot in the leg and another 20-year-old man was shot in the buttocks and leg. Both were taken by friends to Holy Cross Hospital where their conditions were stabilized. One of the victims was later transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.

Around 10:20 p.m., a 19-year-old-man was shot in the right leg when someone fired at him on a sidewalk in the 2400 block of West 47th Street, police said. The man took himself to Advocate Christ Medical Center where he was listed in stable condition.

Just after 11 p.m., a 24-year-old man was shot while driving in the 5400 block of South Harper. The man said someone pulled alongside his vehicle and opened fire. He drove himself to University of Chicago Hospital with a gunshot wound to the back and was listed in stable condition.

Around 11:30 p.m., police fatally shot a man who allegedly chased officers and first responders with a knife in the 7100 block of South Racine Avenue.

One minute before midnight, an 18-year-old man was shot in the right thigh during an argument in the 7800 block of South Greenwood Avenue, police said. The teen told police he was arguing with an unknown offender and when he was walking away that offender fired shots at him, striking him in the upper right thigh. He was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in stable condition, police said.

Imagine how many would be dead if the shooters held the gun upright when firing...
