A West Virginia man blames his GPS after he drove his truck into the Susquehanna River in Bradford County, Pa.
Police say that Jacob W. Ash, 24, of Spencer, W. Va., was driving on state Route 2025 in around 7 a.m. on May 22, pressconnects.com reports.
According to WNEP-TV, the fire chief for the Good Will Fire Company, Brad Fassett, said the driver’s GPS told him he could take Route 2025 and cross the river.
There was a sign that says the road ends, but Ash, who was following directions from his GPS device, didn’t see it since it was dark out and he drove right in the 40-degree water.
He swam to shore and was found eight hours later near river bank by rescuers who say the driver is lucky to be alive.
“With the river and the forces they way they are, it wouldn’t take much for someone to drown very easily. Time is the essence and we want to get there as soon as possible,” Fassett told the news station.
When the rescue crew found him, Ash told them there was an issue with his GPS.
WNEP reports this is not the first time this has happened this year in the same area. The fire chief says another driver had the same GPS problem in January, but he made it off the river since it was frozen at the time.
He was taken to Memorial Hospital in Towanda to be treated for hypothermia-like symptoms.
