Man returns $US125,000 dropped by truck

A Salvation Army worker in California is being rewarded for his decision to return a bag containing $US125,000 ($A135,244.79) that fell from an armoured truck.

Joe Cornell told The Fresno Bee he found the cash on Tuesday after a Brinks truck pulled away from a red light in Fresno and left the sack behind.

"I started crying and shaking," Cornell said.

"Everything was going through my mind - the good devil/bad devil thing. What to do?"

Thoughts of the imminent arrival of his fourth grandchild soon helped him decide.

"I thought, 'What would I want her to think of me?' That made up my mind right there," he said.

"I got on my radio and called my boss. 'Hey, I found a bag of money.' "

Cornell, 52, works in a Salvation Army substance-abuse rehabilitation program.

His duties for the organisation include working on donated trailers.

"I went down there carrying the bag like I was Santa Claus," Cornell said.

Brinks spokesman Ed Cunningham said he isn't sure how the truck lost the money, and he called the incident a security issue.

The company will give Cornell a $US5000 reward and make a separate $US5000 donation to the Salvation Army.

If I recall correctly, there have been stories where people that have happened upon large amounts of seemingly abandoned cash have been charged with theft when they've tried to keep it, so yeah, I'd return it. Apparently, 'finders keepers' doesn't apply anymore.

I bet that traffic intersection was monitored too ;)

The question on my mind though, was if you could get away with it would you keep it?

:hand: He thought about stealing it, therefore, he should be jailed.

hah! it depends on who the "loser" was!

was it some random faceless individual? yes? then it doesnt matter how much is lost, the finder will be able to keep it and the loser will have basically no recourse.

was it some corporation? a large one, at that? or a bank? then you have the full force of fascist government comin right at ya, bro. guns blazing if necessary. and plenty often when its not, too.

simple as that, and a simple reflection of society.

I'm actually going to respond to you and your straw man argument in that thread, but I feel I need to compose myself before I do, because right now all I want to do is hurl obscenities at you and that ain't cool.

I was posting under the assumption that the conditions of this story held true.

yeah, it fell off an armored truck, so that means a bank owns that money, and since the bank owns the police too, that means you keep bank's money, you received the full threat of government.

trust me, if joe schmoe dropped this bag of money and homes kept it, there wouldnt be a goddam thing joe schmoe would be able to do to get his money back.

obviously, anyone with half a conscience would return the money, I was just pointing out that the whole concept of "finders keepers" entirely depends on who the loser was in the first place. if its mayor quimby's money, gov is coming after you. widget corporation, the government is coming after you. AT's bank, the government is coming after you.

I dont know what's in the law books on this - but you can bet your ass that this is how it plays out in the real world.

me, of course I wouldnt keep the money....if it was from a bank, I would have walked around town and ejected chunks of it at each street corner

I've seen to many fucking "welfare" recipients driving god damned cadillacs to have qualms about returning lost money. ;)

Integrity > $

if it belonged to an individual, I absolutely would.

but a bank that takes a dollar from someone and loans it out 15 times and has 15 dollars of loans "owed" to them, and that's how they make their money? where did that money come from? out of thin air via the point of a gun. fuck fractional reserve banking. I would go on a cash gifting spree, and start under the bridges.

I would return it. If it were mine I'd want it back.

They did a hidden camera show where a small child dropped their wallet with $20 in it. Most people saw the drop and tried to give it back right away. Some people saw the drop, took the money, then put the wallet back down.

Two people saw someone take the money, drop the wallet, picked it up, put their own $20 in it, then ran to give it back to the child. Those are the kind of people I want living in this world with me.

I think that the large corporation/bank/whatever should publicly give a hefty finder's fee...on 125 grand let's say 5000 for honesty.

May inspire others to do the right thing.
