I've been after a new laptop for a while so I decided to stop thinking about it and go and get one... It's a HP Pavilion and it works, that's all I need to know but for the geeks who require the ins and outs it has 8g ram 1 terabyte of memory and some kind of quad something or other to make it go, who cares, I just liked it because it's purple.

The 8 gigs of RAM is your memory. RAM means "Random Access Memory". The terabyte is your hard drive space. And the "quad something or other to make it go" is a quad core microprocessor.

Personally, I don't like HPs, but if it works for you, then more power to you.

Oh nice.

8GB of RAM and a quad core processor... must have been quite expensive :richgirl:

If you need any help just ask. I promise not to install software to spy on your webcam... but Hal may have his own plans

I,ve had HP's before and they've always been ok so I thought I'd stick with what I know.

To be honest it was pretty cheap, £400 plus a software package (office, antivirus, cloud store) for an additional £150

like the guys mention 8 gigs of ram is plenty (overall speed),
a quadcore processor is fast (4 things that sort all of your unreasonable demands when you make them at the same time)
and a one terabyte hard drive is more than large enough (to save all of your pictures and videos of hal in various states of undress)

 I'm sure you'll like it Minz, plenty of power and space to save things

You'd have to format the hard drive (erase everything) and do a clean install of Windows 7 and ALL of the programs and files currently in the PC Minz

it's doable and you're not idiot....but you need a Win 7 dvd and copies of all of the software currently in the PC....they may have partitioned the hard drive and put some backup or restore files on the laptop to allow you to reinstall everything the store put in...but again, you have to know how to do it and should have someone experienced help you

maybe call the store and ask if they can install Windows 7 and migrate all of your files over during the process..

I also use Windows 8. It sucks but there's a way to make it run like Windows 7 by using Start8. Start8 will restore the Windows 7 Start menu and give it the functionality of Windows 7 essentially.

Download Start8 here:

Go to microsofts site and download the free 8.1 update. It includes some settings that make it much more user friendly. Or if it already has windows 8.1 I can walk you through a few simple steps to make it much more user friendly.

Sorry just saw this, ill walk you through a few steps when I get home and have my w8 laptop in front of me. First type "windows update" anywhere on the tiles screen and click it on the search results, do an update, look in the optional updates tab and if you see "windows 8.1update" select it and update.

That optional update adds an "X" to the top right of every app and also adds visible shutdown options.

I've been trying to get the old start menu back which I'm told I can do with update 1 but I still can't do it.

You wont get the classic start menu back yet. You do have a shutdown feature bottom left if you right click. All the other programs the easiest thing I've found to do is just start typing anywhere on the tiles screen and it will pop up the search box.
Also there is an option to boot right to desktop now. Personally I just added all my desktop icons to the tiles page trying to get everything in one place.

1. After booting Windows 8.1 (here's how to get the preview if you don't already have it), click the Desktop tile to enter Desktop mode.

2. Right-click any open area in the taskbar, then click Properties.

3. Click the Navigation tab, then check the box next to Go to the desktop instead of Start when I sign in.

4. Click OK, then reboot. Windows should plunk you right into Desktop.

One problem with going back to Win 7 is finding the drivers, we have been sticking with Dell because they still supply windows 7 drivers. So we remove 8 that comes with it and reload with 7

I use the mobo disc drivers for the chipset, realtek's for the sound and network adaptor and use Nvidia's latest for my vidcard...I've saved my Realtek stuff because their site is a royal pain in the ass for finding/explaining what drivers to use. All under Win7

Yep, I doubt it would be an option with HP. They use all proprietary drivers, You won't find them for 7.

That's why I select my hardware, get my place to throw it together (40 bucks) and I get a PC that I can install any OS on without a bunch of preloaded crap on it

I've never bought a preloaded computer in my life :-k

one day I'll probably get lazy and pick one up complete with 500 dollars of software installed that I'll never use but I'm sure the programs will have an associated boot process and slow my computer down accordingly
