A chef has eaten his way to a world record by putting away 80 feet of stinging nettles.
The World Nettle Eating Championships took place at The Bottle Inn, Dorset, on Saturday.
More than 40 West Country masochists entered the event in hope of taking the title but, in the end, aptly-named first-timer Phillip Thorne, 48, ran away with first place.

Mr Thorne, from Colyton in Devon, put his victory in the painful task down to his ‘go for it’ attitude – which may also explain his choice of pullover.
Although Phillip probably thought he conquered the nettles during Saturday’s competition, he’s almost certainly waged a far more devastating personal battle against them behind closed doors since then…
